Shortly before the New York Knicks' tip-off against the New Orleans Pelicans, it was announced that backup guard Brandon Jennings would start as Derrick Rose was not with the team.

Rose's absence quickly became a mystery. Rose was not on the injury report or listed as away from the team for personal reasons.

Reports said that the team and Rose's confidants had not heard from Rose, and though he attended the team's shoot-around Monday morning, he simply did not show up for the game. Amid his absence, concern for his well-being began to rise, with no updates on where he was or why he missed the game.

After the game, however, the picture became slightly clearer.

Knicks center Joakim Noah, one of Rose's close friends, said that he talked to Rose after the game and that Rose was okay. He declined to elaborate, saying he didn't know enough about the situation. Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek also declined to comment, saying he didn't have enough information, though he said he expected Rose to be back with the team.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported that Rose may have traveled back to Chicago.

Additionally, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported that Rose told the team he had a family issue. Shelburne also reported that Rose did not have permission to leave the team, but has since been in touch with them.

It remains unclear, however, why the Knicks would not have been able to reach Rose or why they would be unaware of his whereabouts if he told them he had family matter to attend to. It's possible they were simply caught off-guard by Rose's absence if they had not given him permission to leave.

Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Rose has been upset with the team's performance and his role. Wojnarowski added that Rose's relationship with Hornacek has "frayed in recent weeks." Rose recently sat during the fourth quarter of games while rookie point guard Ron Baker played.

While we're waiting to hear more information, in the meantime, hopefully Rose's well-being on all fronts is not in question.

i assumed he pulled a no show based on the recent benchings in the 4th
I hope he aight but one way or another the knicks can walk away at the end of the season. Shit if its insuboridnation they could cut him now

he better get his mind right cause if he aint careful he can be playing in China with Marbury next season. Rondo in the same boat as well.

looks like another wasted Knicks season. I swear this team is cursed. Good news this wont do irrepable damage to franchise other than being stuck with Noah's contract. However I am starting to wonder how this will effect KP's development going forward. He is the future and i hope they arent wasting quality years in his development.

and Melo I know you love NY & playing for the Knicks but is this the way you want your career to end?

Word on the street is that DRose read who Truth and Turd picked and put all of the money that he has on Bama.

He might be ducking those bookies.

I love my Knicks to death but are back to being a clown unit again....it was all good just a week ago....smh
Trade Mello to a contender because he won't win a ring here with the knicks, we fucked up giving Noah 4 or 5 yr deal because he won't ever be healthy, KP needs to post up more and stop shooting fucking 3s all the time and make Mark Jackson the coach...ok i got that off my chest

FYI, Mello says he has been playing with a bad shoulder for awhile but i bet he won't miss the all star game to play....Watch!!!

Damn A.I didn't even do this. I mean. He called in sick, then I'd see him on South St in Philly in his Bentley like???? I thought he was sick????? The game IS ON RIGHT NOW

It's about time the Knicks and Clippers make a deal.

Knicks get: Blake Griffin/JJ Redick

Clippers get: Carmelo Anthony/Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose's absence raises question of whether he's the right fit with Knicks

NEW YORK – Where’s Derrick?

The first thing you wonder is if Derrick Rose – the Knicks point guard who was AWOL for New York’s 110-96 loss to New Orleans on Monday night – has been found. And he has – at least according to teammate Joakim Noah, who told reporters that he spoke to Rose after the game and said that Rose was OK. Rose sent similar text messages to friends, league sources told The Vertical, though as of the early hours of Tuesday morning his communication with the organization has been minimal.

Where’s Derrick?

The next thing you wonder is why Rose – a starter and a key cog in the Knicks’ fight for a playoff spot – would abandon his team. Family issue? Personal reasons? It’s been a challenging year for Rose. Traded from Chicago in June, Rose was a defendant in a civil rape trial (he was found not liable) that consumed most of training camp. He has been playing catch-up all season, all while trying to familiarize himself with a new team, new city, new role.

Yet if it was a personal issue, why not say it? Why not tell Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek instead of forcing him to face the media with no answers. Here’s an industry secret about the “personal reasons” absence: Reporters often don’t dig too deep on it. Athletes are human, with real problems that need to be addressed. An isolated, unexplained absence for personal reasons wouldn’t have been met with much inquiry, even in a media-saturated town like New York.

“Right now we don’t have enough information to give you anything,” Hornacek said. “That’s just going to have to wait until we hear something from Derrick himself.”

Rose needs the absence to be for personal reasons, too. It’s the only way he comes back from this. Think Knicks fans will take to a player who quits on a team in the midst of a tailspin? Rose has no equity in New York. He’s a one-year rental whom Knicks loyalists hoped would rebound from an endless string of injury-ravaged seasons to be the backcourt yin to Carmelo Anthony’s frontcourt yang. His numbers have been decent (17.3 points per game), but his defense has been mediocre, his 3-point shooting worse and he’s watched as undrafted free agent Ron Baker played the fourth quarter in a win over Milwaukee on Friday night.

In this case, personal reasons will require an explanation – and a good one. But it’s the only way the door to return opens. Quitting on your team because you are struggling and unhappy with your role – Rose’s relationship with Hornacek has become strained in recent weeks, league sources told The Vertical – is unacceptable. Teammates won’t accept it. Fans, either. Rose would put Knicks president Phil Jackson in a position of either having to suspend him or buy him out.

Speaking of which: Where was Jackson? At Madison Square Garden for the game on Monday – but nowhere to be found after. Information about Rose’s unexcused absence spread through social media quickly. Yet instead of addressing the situation – as many other NBA executives would do – Jackson forced Hornacek to do it. It was Jackson who acquired Rose, and soon after seemed befuddled to learn that the civil trial would cost Rose most of camp. It was his responsibility, not Hornacek’s, to articulate what the team knew about Monday’s situation.

The Knicks play again on Wednesday, in Philadelphia, and no one in the organization knows if Rose will be there. The team frantically searched for Rose on Monday, with some high-level staffers relying on Twitter for information. The organization will likely try to salvage the situation, to prop up Rose and hope he can contribute to the playoff push. Rose may have sabotaged any chance for a future in New York, but with half a season to go, he can still help the Knicks in the present.

Where’s Derrick? Believe me: The Knicks would like to know, too.

Phil's been spending too much time with his posse. He needs to fix this.

The first step in fixing this mess is firing himself.

The only good things about Phil's tenure have been KP and not trading away first round picks.

The KP pick was a homerun but that was Clarence Gaines scouting that sealed that deal.

Otherwise why pay $25M a season to not trade draft picks? Brothers on BGOL can produce equal production for $250K.

The Snicks need to call Cleveland and somehow parlay Melo and Rose for their late late 1st rounders and some garbage contracts.

LeBron gets his backup pg who is off the books at the end of the season, Melo gets his ring, and Cavs can unload the massive contract of Tristan Thompson.

Unfortunately, he may have just ended his career. Especially as a relevant player. First this rape civil issue, now this? No team with any degree of common sense will touch this dude. He's well on his way if not having surpassed Rondo status at this point. With all of his issues coma Ronda was never accused of rape. Even though those one that case, the stain on his character is still there.

The Knicks organization is a horrible place for players and coaches to land.

Dysfunctional all hell.

Rose aint showing up.

Melo keeps begging the refs to toss him.

The Knicks are raggedy.

It aint the coaches or the players with such a streak on failed seasons.

Mike Woodson is the best coach since 2001?

It is the owner/organization.

Yeah and surpassing Rondo is really, REALLY hard to do. :smh: I thought he was over Shaddy's crib.

Melo and Rose make too much money for a trade like that. Salaries have to match.

Knicks ain't just going to give away Melo for little in return. They have a history of not being in a rush to win.

Melo is an anchor.

Rose is coming off the books at season end.
