Depression and stress? How do you deal with it?

It is widely known that black people don't seek out help for depression and when we are stressed we don't do much about that either.

When you are in a funk, and I don't mean a short bout of sadness, I mean a seriously long period of extreme depression. What do you do to snap out of it?

Have you known anyone to be severely depressed? Did you try to help them? Were you successful?

I suffer this alot. Alot of times something has to happen for me to snap out of it. The first step is getting myself out of the house so something can possibly happen. Herb helps me quite a bit. Meditation helps too. Also eating better. Sometimes its caused by some type of vitamin or mineral deficiency. I am in one right now. I try to distract myself and keep busy even if just with "busywork" tasks to keep my mind off it. Good upbeat postive happy music helps to keep my mind engaged as well. When its really really bad i go to sleep even if for just and hour and usually wake up on a new vibe.

These are key points. It is extremely important to keep your energy levels up. Fasting, exercise, proper nutrition, and dealing with positive people (negative people will drain your energy) all help to combat stress and depression.

Good post!

Had three close family members institutionalised for depression and i tried to help out two of them but i was paying too high a price of maybe sinking into that pit with them.:smh:

So i know now that while you can try to help people you can only offer as much as you can afford to but always make sure that you keep on looking after your own best interests because if you don't who will.

Don't shut people out of your life unnecessarily and try to make a conscious choice to pursue the things that bring you joy and fulfillment. Trim the people out of your life who only take and have nothing to give and know what you want out of your life. And make the effort to find the silver lining in any dark clouds you come across.

I try to keep a positive attitude, and a bottle of the yac nearby, lol....but it is mainly a mental thing that you have to talk to directly, your mind will conjure up some drastic things when you are in a funk, so the best thing is to get out of the house, do something different, smile, keep good company, which could be another or an inspirational book..

Great Topic-
You know I have mixed emotions on this. I believe in meditation, yoga & other relaxation techniques. But I really believe this doesnt work for all people. I dont want anyone to run out and try the latest drug but I do believe that some people could benefit from them if taken correctly and after someone has been diognosed after trying natural techniques.

I see this all the time in my line of work. I've already had six consultations today, all females, overweight, very depressed, very stressed out. I'll tell you like I've told them, MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF FIRST, AND IF YOU HAVE MADE TIME FOR YOURSELF ALREADY, THEN SIT DOWN AND WRITE OUT A SCHEDULE OF HOW TO MANAGE IT. I always have a consultation with all people before I begin any training in the gym. Here are some key points :

a. Ask ANY expert, diet & excersise are the biggest key elements. Excersising leads to better EVERYTHING, better sleep, clearer thinking, it removes waste elements from your body, that could be making you sick. Make time to excersise your body at least three times a week, if only for 30 minutes.

b. Environment. At home, I use a lot of lavender oil, and this really helps me relax and unstress. The scent of Lavender calms the senses. I have a spray i use on my bed linen, and around my louging room furniture. I listen to smooth jazz, gospel, and slow love music. I create a place of serenity, a place of peace. It's almost like having two worlds.

I'll tell you, all people go thru depression at one point or another. Remember one thing, you are a beautiful person Femme, and as long as YOU feel good about yourself, that's all that matters. One thing I've always believed in, is that everyone is beautiful, everyone is different. Cameo is Cameo, you are you. We are equals, originally made by God. I'm kinda busy today, but I willing to help in any way I can.

Well this particular deep breathing I do really helps enormously. It takes enough self knowledge/awareness tho to monitor your mind and every time you catch the thoughts starting just blow them right the fuck out. I do it in my own style I tell my self "shut the fuck up bigirl". Once you get into it you can see the thoughts coming and stop them before they even fully form. I am aware that not everyone can do that. But its worth a try.

I tried St Johns Wort which is an herbal remedy for depression. Couldn't stand it. It felt like herbal ecstacy. Artificial even though its natural. Never tried Babylon antidepressants and have no intention of ever doing so.

You know I'm going to try the lavendar thing. I heard that before.

I deal with it by working out or running. If the weather is nice I'll go sit in the sun and write. Sleep helps on occasion, like an extra hour or so.

I'm still working with how to deal with stress properly.

I've found the work out relieves stress tremendously. Even if it's a just 30 minute walk, it will help clear my head and help me get focused.
I also pray when I get stressed.

Another thing I do is take a long, hot bath. I light candles ( I get mango mandarin candles from White Barn) and put on little Nina Simone. . . and everything worrying me fades away.

When I'm stressed I freak the hell out. I try to avoid interaction with other people. I'll try to take a nice hot bath with somethin that smells relaxing

I been locked in the house for well over a month except for the corner store. Today it was "warm" and I had to go to a meeting in the city so I took a real nice long walk maybe a mile and a half. Was very very good for my head but it made me real tired but thats really good as I have had insomnia.
