Denzel Washington: Don't blame the prison system, 'It starts at the home'

2+ million black men aren’t in the prison system by accident. I guess all of them are because it starts in the home? BTW, who’s responsible for the system that broke up the home?

Just another black celebrity tip toeing around the issue, nothing to see here.

It's never just one issue when it comes to us and Denzel knows that.
so when black men had fathers in their home and dressed suited and booted all the time back in the 60's and b4 cops never arrested them, sicked dogs on them, fire hosed them, or faslely imprisoned themo_Oo_O..so it's the so called fatherless thing and not the system itself.. guess all these black men that have been released from prison after decades of being falsely accused had something to do with single parenting:rolleyes::rolleyes:... guess all them presidents thats been connected to drug trades had great daddies

Denzel KNOWS better than this...

I hope he was misquoted

Cause he got a son who is a raising actor...

hope he says the SAME THING if he ever gets in trouble

and in the CURRENT climate?

That aint far fetched all

Why can't you blame both

Don't tell me Denzel is going to start saying stupid shit as he gets old

It's very possible. Like how he was so pissed off about the "Uncle Denzel" meme from Magnificent 7. Young Denzel might've laughed that shit off. Just cuz dude is "THE BLACK ACTOR" doesn't mean he won't get bitter & cynical in his twilight years...:dunno:

Denzel may not have been fully quoted so can't drag him here.

What point is not made in this quote is the numerous factors (systemic racism) that rips apart the black family. Not every family is strong enough to break those chains. Shit is quite real.

Good point-- he almost certainly was not quoted fully.

Agreed with 90 percent of what he said.

kats will do anything to avoid being responsible.

starting of by being fathers to their damn children.

and for those kids today who don't have a father at home and a single mother working to make ends meet

what is THAT solution?

what advice would you give to get her out of the situation and make sure the kid doesn't end up in prison?

what advice would you give to people like us who watch from the outside?

what is your role?

I hear kats who dont even take care of their kids, not monetarily and not being there for them in person.

these men do not provide them with the tools to their kids to start off their lives, but sit there and want to discuss and complain about the system and white supremacy to me.
i choose not to even entertain the idea of holding these conversations with these men.

am so sick and tired of ppl blaming others for even the most basic and simple things that they can improve upon.

mofos just hate structure.

where do you live?

I'm not about to sit here and act like I haven't heard many older black people say similar things.

If we want to keep it all the way a buck, in my experience, most 'non-woke' black people, if you let them talk about black people long enough, don't hold the highest opinion of black people in general.

This is why I kind of laugh when people call people like Stephen A. Smith, Barkley, etc .... coons, 'cause I'd bet my bottom dollar, most of us have loved ones who share similar perspectives.

Lets not act like most black people understand the intricacies of the system of white supremacy. They know racists exists, but have a very basic understanding of how it affects the community.

true

and that is the real reason racism still exists

self-education

you can't create a strategy for something you don't understand

How can we expect to be ourselves when we are running with devils (whites). You have some blacks that family life do not mean shit to them but money do. It is a system that buys your soul. By the time a child is 6 years old his mind has been turned out by a white reality and that child goes to school to become a successful devil. If it is a black child it is raised having no true knowledge of self and kind. Any chance of you not being totally controlled by a white reality will send you to jail or prison quicker than any crime. The ones that write the laws are controlled by the biggest criminals in the world.
Denzel is speaking as a person on the opposite team.

Man y’all niggas hate accountability and love to take a simple statement out of context just so that you can be the victim.

You can’t control racism and systematic racism. No matter how hard you try, it will have an effect on your life. But damn, y’all niggas can keep your ass out of prison. That is the one thing you can control

Yup

In this day and age, it does start at home. Family fucking planning to combat fuckery. There's a reason the 'war on drugs' and 'war on poverty' happened with civil rights. :smh:

Folks just hate to hear the truth. Game is rigged, but shit is so obvious. This isn't the 1950s when black people couldn't look cacs in the eye without some shit. It's where these cacs won't even look us in the eye unless they the police.

I hate when people use single parenthood and absence of fathers as some excuse.

Tons of successful people were raised by a single mom, and it didn't make a difference.

I went to college with tons of women and men raised by single mothers who fared just well.

The single mother doesn't need to look at herself as another "statistic," but just be honest about her situation, what she can and cannot control and what programs that exist that can support her.

Single parenthood/motherhood doesn't equate to poverty - for decades, the black community has worked because of our extensive networks and extended families.

As long as she has a strong family unit (or surrounds herself with strong people) that won't allow her to fail, her child won't fail.

Bullshit, I was raised by a single mom. And it was a whole lot easier when my pops was there. We all went to college. Mom's had a good head on her shoulders but she had zero family. Pop's family was around and done little to nothing for us. It does make a difference. A big ass difference. You got it twisted homie.

Its always both except on BGOL..

starts at home doesn't mean the justice system works equally.

Same thing can be said with education. ..it starts at home..

Respect for self,starts at home

Ect ect ect..

2 million black folks in prison but over 30 million black folks here. ..but goofies want to use the narrative...

The system is corrupt. If he cannot see it in 60 years on this planet, I’m going to venture he’s not going to change his perspective anytime soon.
It's part of it, of course. I've run into a lot of POC with absolutely no discipline, but if 2 years or probation for white person is 8 for a Black person then it is definitely the system

The fuck I look like arguing with a crazy person?

Easier, yes, but not impossible for a single mother to raise a child successfully. I see it everyday where I work - there are always exceptions, but I still stand behind what I believe.

I don't have a dog in this fight but I am curious about one thing. Most of the people on this board have avoided the trappings of a crooked justice system. I'd like to know how you did it and to whom or what do you give the most credit for not becoming one of the social statistics that so many black men can't seem to avoid. I'm not trying to make any points here. I'm just curious.

South Africa was leading the world with the most locked up. Now it is America. Can you image turning into criminals, junkies, etc. when the people that robbed your land, genocide your race, live large and look like angels when actually they are devils in disguise. Demons transferred into angels of light. But it is a false light.

He is saying that JD Washington will never be race-profiled or
targetted by the white police. I hope his myopic vision is not
exacerbated by a desire for the approbation of cacs.

the truth of the matter is the prison system has a quota and they need bodies behind them bars..they prefer people of color behind them..every blackman could go out and get a good paying job tomorrow and own a bizz and they'd still find a way to lock your ass up..hell they'll change rules and laws juss to find things u naturallyo do become illegal or mini things that you do thats not so legal become bigger crimes..stream music, movies, sports its a felony now...mandatory drug test you got weed in your system felony..piss in public automatic 30 day jail term(nj law), they'll find a way to get them quota's..so don't believe the hype its juss people being bad naww if them jails get empty they gonna make sure they get filled 1 way or another

:smh:

Is your self esteem really that low that you think no matter WHAT we do we'll be forced into a cell?

What do yall tell your kids? "Hey junior, I know you have hopes and dreams but it's pointless cause CACs will lock ya up eventually!"

CACs have done a number on yall.

Meanwhile I'm gonna estimate that 95% of BGOL members have never been placed in handcuffs. :dunno:

There may be some truth to what the bugger is saying; but the
problem is that he presents his opinion as if it is the whole and
only truth. He could absolve himself of all need to be codemned
if he would explicate further that what he stated was just one
factor in an expansive issue otherwise defined and determined
by the inherent racism of the system

Well, he's partially right BUT he should have expanded further about the fact the too many innocent black men have been imprisoned by the system on false set-up charges. That's obviously one of the main contributing factors of our people being imprisoned.
Love and discipline does start from the home but unless there is a fair system in place there will always be injustice aimed at innocent black people.

Just how many niggas locked up do you believe were locked up on false charges? Just throw out a percentage for us...

I've had a high double digit number of friends and relatives get locked up in the past 20 years for various shit and ALL them niggas were 100% guilty of the crimes they were charged with.

Let's be real now.

To be fair to Mr. Washington, he does have a point and not only is he one of those actors who put their mouth and money behind a cause. For those who don’t know, Denzel has been instrumental in helping the live of young black youth through his work with The Boys and Girls Clubs of America in the inner cities. Not only has Washington given his own money to the cause but has and continues to give his time in Arts in Education especially in NYC the Bronx and Mount Vernon, which I have seen first hand and is available for anyone to research. Before we start to criticize brothers those who we disagree with let’s do the research.

Of course it starts at home..

Why is this controversial?

Most of you have never done a weekend confined so how did you avoid the big bad prison industrial complex?

Some of you will stomp your feet and grit your teeth to avoid any personal responsibility. ..

Yea man. Its a case of a "sad truth". I think as mature black men and wonen on this board, we understand that the overall system is not in our favor but that doesnt give us an excuse to give up on life. Its like coaching a bball team but you only got one player over 6'5...you just have to make adjustments & coach your team better and harder and more strategically.

I assume thats what Denzel was getting at. We have to stop making excuses and fixing the blame. We know the facts of white supremacy, it will never change but we still have to raise our kids in this society and guide them to have productive lives. We just got to work 3x harders. But as black people we are built for this. Look at our ancestors and the shit they went through. Its in our DNA to be strong physically and mentally.

Thats were as a black community we have to educate each other on what are the best ways to raise our kids. There are a lot of black people that just dont know. And then we (black community) wonder why a 16 year old boy who everyone thought was a cute lil 4 year old, is out here trying to be a punk ass thug.

I dont know man. This shits kind of hits home for me. Ive coached youth sports for over 12 years. Specifically AAU basketball. Ive seen kids from the time they were 10 up into 17. I feel like i failed some of these boys because some of them are caught up in the system and the street life. Its like I knew that if some of them didnt make it with sports, that by the time they reach 18/19 they were just going to be roaming the streets with an idle mind. I felt like i could of done more.

Nah, yours friends and family are just a bad lot.. Sucks to be you.

If you want to be real just keep looking at the news reports on a regular basis and see the amount of black men that are being cleared by the courts after spending years in prison on false charges.
