Defunct Black/Urban Magazines

Homie, do a search for "lamonte mclemore".......that was the man behind the Jet Beauties and the nude calendars....

Thanks...I will do that search...

...I knew this girl who was a Jet Beauty of the Week many years ago...she said there was this guy in her area who shot a lot of the Jet Beauties...she said a girl could get in Jet through him on one condition...if she slept with him (which she admitted that she did...). She also showed me pictures from the photo shoot...let's just say that the best pictures didn't make the magazine, okay?

It is true that some Jet Beauties were porn actresses or appeared in other nude magazines...but they took a lot of girls off college campuses. I remember when most of the Jet Beauties came from Dayton, Ohio...had a Brotha wanting to move there to go to college!:)

As for the Jet nude calendars, they were made from the late 60s to 1984 (I have the last one made, in 1984). I was pissed that they stopped making the calendars...they were nice...

...also, I forgot about DeUnique...it was shot mainly with girls from the DMV...had a few nice girls, but production was not the best...

Ever notice that the Black men's adult magazines would always have articles that no one gave a fuck about? And that they always had spelling or grammatical errors? I guess no one was caring about English, they just wanted to see the women!

I never bought any of them but I use to make a weekly trip to the book store and spent a good hour reading them though

Well, I don't know about Lamonte Mclemore (although I wouldn't be surprised if he was...he photographed some fine women), but I was talking about this guy in Ohio...

I'm co-signing both of these as well. Code was the best lifestyle magazine ever aimed at black men. Quality articles of substance. Like a black GQ.

Emerge was a great political magazine. The closest thing to it right now that I know of is www.blackagendareport.com

I already work in the publishing industry, and I am seriously interested in working on a great digital magazine for black people. But honestly, I really don't think the audience is there.

Its a gamble but I think its worth a shot. There's definitely a need there's no question about it. Plus it could be a stepping stone to something greater. I think its worth a shot, especially if the readers can comment. Word of mouth will increase traffic.

YSB (Young Sistas & Brothers) Magazines was my shyt back in middle and high school. Great articles, photography, & layout. I think it was a mag that BET put out.

What I am curious about is whether it's effective to have an app, or just a website. Men's Health and GQ are two magazines that have great app versions, and I wonder if more people download the app versions now or still buy them off the rack.

Damn, World B...first the Angela Bofill Unsung episode, now this...thanks, man...If I knew you, I'd buy you a beer...now, if you could find me a link for this Jet calendar, I'd buy you a whole case! :)

:lol::lol:...cheers, homie,

...I'm on the hunt for the calendars, even as a kid I wanted to see them....

Interesting question I do know magazine sales are off how much I'm unaware. I used to keep magazines with me when I used to commute daily to NYC. I still purchase mags but not like I used to.

I'm sure that data is available somewhere. I do know advertisers are fewer. Just do your homework upfront then you'll have your answer.

In 2014, Johnson Publishing Company indicated that it would cease publishing Jet issues at the end of June.:(

Been looking for an black stripper magazine from Virginia. Mainly was in Newport News from late 90s. Use to love finding my uncle's Black Tail magazines. That and his Vhs tapes of Janet Jacme.
