It's award season in the NBA but commissioner David Stern is concerned his league may be veering too close to handing out Oscars.

During Sunday's Eastern Conference semifinal opener between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers, Stern was asked what he thought about comments made by Pacers coach Frank Vogel in regards to what Vogel considered the Heat's tendency to flop.

"(Vogel) didn't have a beef; he was just manipulating the refereeing or trying to," Stern said. "I would have fined him much more than our office did."

While Stern chastised Vogel for on Thursday calling the Heat "the biggest flopping team in the NBA," he did intimate that he sees merit in the sentiment.

"I think it's time to look at (flopping) in a more serious way," Stern said, "because it's only designed to fool the referee. It's not a legitimate play in my judgment. I recognize if there's contact (you) move a little bit, but some of this is acting. We should give out Oscars rather than MVP trophies.
"

:lol::lol::lol:

Vogel is not the only person in the playoffs to call out an opponent for embellishing contact.

On Friday, Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph called his team's first round opponents -- the Los Angeles Clippers -- the league's biggest floppers "by far," while being interviewed on ESPN Radio's "The Doug Gottlieb Show."

Randolph went so far as to single out Clippers stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

"It starts with Chris Paul, because Blake didn't really used to flop like that, you know, last year," Randolph said. "Reggie (Evans) flops, Reggie always flops. I think it started when Chris got (to the Clippers)."

While Stern didn't call out any specific teams, he did say he has personally attempted to curb the flopping in the past.

"Some years ago I told the competition committee that we were going to start fining people for flopping, and then suspending. And I think they almost threw me out of the room (saying), 'No, let it be.' "

Floppers may not receive any punishment but those that point the finger do, as Vogel had to enter his team's second-round series with the Heat $15,000 lighter.

I think flopping in the NBA is just as big of a concern for the sport of basketball as player safety has recently become in the NFL.

Flopping is one of the reasons that the game is damn near unwatchable now. I don't care for it much in the regular season but once the playoffs start, the refs need to just swallow their whistles.

I watched the Grizzlies and Clippers game today, I did see flops, but for the most part, the refs let them play.

The Pacers were the better team. They seemed more defeated with all the flopping calls. Its pitiful that Stern has to hand the title to the Heat. The halftime broadcaster was real when he said phantom foul.

LeBron must be the only three time MVP award winner who has never won a title.

damn and i thought football (soccer) was bad with the flopping.

in football (soccer) they actually give yellow cards to floppers, especially when they are in the box 18, soccer players just got down trying to get a penalty.

What can possibly be done? The refs have a fraction of a second to make a call and once they do they won't overturn it.

That being said, it sounds like LeBron is falling out of favor with Stern.

So this thread is turning into a Bash lebron thread when there are clearly more floppin ass niggas in the league... some of you niggas some real hoes

I agree that other players outside of the Heat do it but because it is Bron doing it the issue is magnified 10 fold. You know people will use "when did other HOF's flop so much" argument. So like it or not the aruably best player in the league using flopping tactics will garner attention.

and I will tell em 1 hof'er who was prolific at flopping Reggie fuckin Miller

fine players for flopping

I know its hard to tell right there in the heat of the moment during the game if you are a ref

But flops need to be reviewed and fines need to be handed out the day after the game

Get that bullshit out of the NBA

There are player who can play without getting those flops calls such as Lebron but like Reggie Evans said if you can do it and get an advantage during the game then why not?

And he is right, that's why I say start the fines and I bet they will get that weak ass shit under control

Dirk a floppin ass German too

Dirk a floppin ass German too

Damn right he flops

But if they took flopping out the game he would stil be able to shoot over his defender

Just like if they took flopping out the game Lebron would still be able to play his game

Kobe, Wade, etc etc

The players flop because its rewarded by foul calls and free throws

selective hypocrisy is always amusing....

but carry on..
Stern's comment about giving out Oscars instead of MVP's is what directed attention to Lebron, regarding this story. Lebron is the current MVP. If he had said, "We should hand out Oscars instead on Sixth Man of the Year, that would have been perceived as a dig at James Harden.

But, there's no question that, no matter how many other players are guilty of it and to what degree, Lebron James is a prolific flopper. It is what it is.
