Curious question about financial independence

I'm really passionate about becoming debt free and gaining financial independence in order to change my family legacy. I find it easy to keep my eyes on the overall goal while my family lives comfortably (not poor but not well off either).

At the same time, I wonder what makes most people be as careless and have the exact opposite attitude about debt?

I also want to know who's influenced your financial "thinking" (for me, initially it was my mother & grandpa).

Just curious about how people relate to finances and if there's someone just as passionate about becoming debt free as I.

Well, I wil tell you how it all started for me. I feel it is learned behavior. My mom was stingy my dad was liberal and I wanted to find a happy medium. They did not argu about money a lot but arguments stemmed from what could not be done for lack of money.

I save pennies from like 4 to 12. My dad took me to the credit union to start my first bank account with $70 in pennies. I remember waiting in line and asking him, "Dad, a $100 is not a lot of money is it?" "No, son, it isn't." Right then I was committed to a life long mission on that never having to be a problem.

I majored in economics, graduated and read d*mn near every book in the business and finance section that summer waiting for jobs to pan out. I got it...I got it right when I read it but had no money. I have had ok jobs, good jobs and great jobs. None of them gave me the extra in the time frame I needed to "come up." Then in 2002, I read Rich Dad Poor Dad.

At that moment, I did not just know, it made SENSE. I deviated from debt elimination to cash flow increase. I have spent my lifes work tyring to find the best cash flow situation for me and my goals. If you are black and in America, you will learn what you need to know about money from the library, the internet and nice white people, more than likely. It's a shame but that's the game.

However, no matter how good the foundation, if one's parents could give it to them, if you are not driven to not be a slave to the man, the system or your own personal demons then none of it matters. You have to see the big pictue to dig out of debt, see how much it is costing you and live debt free.

For all those that come into this thread, I recommend this guys radio show and tv show: www.daveramsey.com. Solid information. I appreciate you asking the question man. It should have been many more responses before mine.
