The ranking member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee has asked for financial records of two famous Atlanta ministries and four ministries from other states.

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), who has a reputation of demanding financial transparency from non-profits, sent letters to Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, and the Rev. Creflo Dollar and Taffi Dollar of World Changers Church International asking for records of salaries, housing allowances, credit card statements, expense accounts, cars and airplanes owned, overseas and domestic bank accounts and information about board members and their relationships to the ministries.

They preach "prosperity through tithes and prayer"..so overall a higher percentage pay tithes as required. Don't forget tithes is 10% of your income..

20k weekly capacity, say only 12k show up and pay tithes. With an average 40k salary, AFTER taxes, that's about 700k to the church..PER WEEK...that's over 35 million a year..TAX FREE

And we didn't start with the Books, CD's, Tapes, T-shirts in the bookstore out in the lobby, or the TV and Radio contracts, seminars and appearance fees..

Even if you GROSSLY underestimate things, these cats are sitting on BAGS of cash. And what do the people get in return..a place to worship?

A spokesman for Long's ministry said the bishop will comply.

Dollar could not be reached.

"I'm following up on complaints from the public and news coverage regarding certain practices at six ministries," Grassley said in a press release.


The other ministers are the Rev. Benny Hinn, David and Joyce Meyer, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland and Randy and Paula White. All are well known in the evangelical religious broadcasting world."

The allegations involve governing boards that aren't independent and allow generous salaries and housing allowance and amenities such as private jets and Rolls Royces," Grassley said.

"I don't want to conclude that there's a problem, but I have an obligation to donors and the taxpayers to find out more. People who donated should have their money spent as intended and in adherence with the tax code."

In the letter to Long, Grassley refers to an article from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In 2005 the paper ran a story that looked into Long's founding of a charity that paid the minister more than $3 million over a 3-year period, bought him a $1.4 million home and paid for the use of a $350,000 Bentley car.

The letter to the Dollars mentions information that Dollar tried to raise $1 million from other ministers to give to Kenneth and Gloria Copeland for a celebration of their 40th year of ministry, and that Dollar's ministries gave more than $500,000.

Jill Kozeny, a Grassley spokeswoman, said, "Some of the accounts were of particular concern about lack of transparency, about how (the ministries) spend millions while you have it all exempted from federal taxes."
