I'm sure it's always been just as prevalent but we are now far more aware of it since it gets posted on the internet.
Before you'd only occasionally hear about it in your area depending on how slow the news day was.
My theory is that the more thirsty incels get the shit like this will happen.

I believe you because on my job there were these two weirdos who were both creepy. They used to stalk and secretly take pics of women. One brought an expensive Benz thinking women will fuck him because of his car, but it didn't work.
It got to the point were they tried setting me and another worker because women ignored them and was cool with us. The big dummies wound up getting fired because of their creepy behavior.
What I got from that experience is many of them are socially awkward and have no clue as to how to get a women. They are the guys who spend thousands on Only fans hoes thinking one day they will be their girlfriend, or the average looking chick with three kids who thinks they will one day get a high value man.
As a whole we are becoming more and more socially inept and I blame social media for a lot of this incel behavior, and it will only get worse with time.
I think cities should open up big discos like they had in yhe 70s so people could start socializing in real life again. Because as long as we have sit at home hermits, many of them will graduate to be incels and more and more of this behavior will continue to grow.

Side note - there were some sketchy 1980s-style vans around in the area in recent years. Clearly people living out of them. We had a similar incident at work within the past year or two. A van was parked on a main street for months. It didn't move and clearly wasn't being used for driving. Someone torched that shit overnight. Clean-up crew was around a day or two later discarding all the debris.
