Comcast 160mbps in 2008..damn!!!!!

Comcast is acually holding back on the amount of speed they can offer my man. They can match with verizon whenever they want to although they are to tight with the price. i used to be a tech for them here in Killadelphia.

i was about to say, werent people here on bgol complaing about comcast capping download and cutting off service to those that downloaded too much?

How much more will that cost?...cause we know it ain't free.
I'm already paying over 200 a month with cable, phone and net...

Too bad that shit would just be bottlenecked by hardware limitions (i.e. processing speed and hard line limitations/restriction)

Why?

I don’t think you are correct. Comcast's backbone is copper core (30 year old tech.). The FIOS backbone is fiber-optic (current Tech). Everyone (except Comcast) knows you can move more data over fiber (light) then you can with copper.

In addition, would comcast customer be able to come close to 160mbps at peak useage times in their neighborhoods?

Remember, FIOs is also holding back on the amount of bandwidth its fiber optic network can provide. FIOS is only giving residential customers a small fraction of the fiber network bandwidth. If they opened it up more, residents could get 1000 mbps like fiber customers do in Japan.

Plus Fiber is way cheaper to maintain then copper once its installed. Which brings the consumer a savings.

Damn, I just upgraded to Comcast Blast yesterday for $10 extra a month. I wonder how much more this is going to cost me:confused:

from what i've heard of comcast. comcast will be the death of comcast.

Comcast is being sued for capping people's download speed. Nobody that I know with comcast can sustain speeds above 2MB/sec before it crashes.

Man, Comcast is just like my Cowboys...We gets no respect.

We gone be alright though. You'll see!

That shit ain't happening.....shit is a pipe dream. Even if they are able to offer 160mbps, it will probably shared with everyone on the node...just like it is today.

Ive ben doing IT work for a very long time, and I've yet to see a bandwidth pipe that was NOT shared. Hence the term INTERNET

160mbps?!?!

My connection is 8mbps right now and I thought that was fast.

It's like they want a motherfucka to download\bootleg.

Remember, Comcast is a share line...the more people on the line, the slower the speed.

In addition, Comcast has laid copper lines and no matter what, there's going to be a speed limit.

FIOS is fiber optic and LIGHT is always faster than an electrical current.

Comcast leases their lines (circuits) from companies like AT&T, Level 3 Communications, Qwest Communications, etc.

If they are going to offer higher bandwidth capabilities, then it means those companies are offering that to them.

All companies who provide internet services have the capabilities of giving you SONET speeds if they wanted but it's not practical or economical.

What is outlined in red are the carrier lines most often purchased by most companies. OC-192's being quite popular but now companies are going even higher. The arrows show the line rates. That is what is being divided at the company's discretion which trickles down to folks like me and you.

i got 6mb i think

how come a nigga download speed barely hit 1mb

Many factors here. The site you are going to may not have the b/w or may be throttling downloads, hence the need for d/l accelerators. If cable, maybe your area is crowded as you are all sharing that link. Maybe you have a bad physical connection. Do a trace route and look at hop times, you may have a bad hop that needs to be addressed.

there is no hardware limitations with that speed when I was in Japan back in 2003 they had 160mbps and 200mbps dsl and cable connections and the only limitations were that some people still had 100mbps Ethernet cards instead of 1gbps ethernet cards. Now I hear that they have 1gbps to 5gbps internet contections. Now with those speeds I think you will be hardware limited man I wish we could have these speeds here. Damn you Comcast and ATT give us what Japan has now not what they had back in 2003:angry:

right now I get 16mbps d/l with comcast.. so youre saying its going to be slower than that?

fyi: all bandwidth is shared....just depends at what junction point.

You guys did not read the article. Comcast does have fibre line. It may not be in your location just like FIOS not in mine but the do have fiber.

From the article
[....Roberts says he'll show "the two-way,
fiber-optic-based network we built is ready for the
next generation" of TV, phone and Internet products.]

Everyone is going fiber. Even ATT has fiber. Just not in our hoods.

Keep in mind that the speeds listed on their site are in 'megabits' per second and not 'megabytes.'

I think there are 8 megabits in a megabyte so 6 mmb would roughly be about 750 kilobytes per second.

man, i have Comcast (used to be Warner) and this shit crawls almost as slow as dial up.

when it was Time Warner the shit was fast as hell.

fuck 'em too.
