Police are investigating several cases in which nooses have been left at workplaces to intimidate black employees.
On Wednesday, a supervisor at the Verizon Wireless Business Services Center in Marshall found a black doll with a noose around its neck and racial slurs directed at it, said company spokeswoman Laura Merritt. Northern Regional Police are investigating.
Verizon is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the person or people who did it, Merritt said.
"We want to make it clear to our employees that we're committed to providing them with a safe and harassment-free workplace and these types of actions won't be tolerated," Merritt said.
In another incident yesterday, Errol Madyun, a black ironworker foreman, said he found a noose hanging over his second-floor work station at an O'Hara condominium construction site. A day earlier, a black laborer on the same site found a noose hanging over his work station, he said.
Madyun said he reported the incident to police, who took a report but told him there was nothing they could do. O'Hara police declined to comment.
On Monday, a black doll with a racial slur aimed at a female, black employee was found hanging in an employees-only hallway of the Port Authority of Allegheny County East Liberty garage. Port Authority police are investigating.
Northern Regional Police Chief Bob Amann said the incidents appear to be unrelated.
