CNN Black in America

I think this thread right here in contrast to the one on BGOL is further proof that we as black men are gone...we've completely lost our grip on how to deal with these issues.

our house is burning down, and instead of grabbing for some water, we are standing outside philosophizing and intellectualizing about the evil white man and republicans that didn't pass a law for the right type of building materials for our home that wasn't so flammable yada yada yada...

one of the few things positive I can say about young black women - they are very head strong and know the tic toc. get out there and get it and will filter out the bullshit...black women hold the key to saving our communities but don't even know it. it's probably too late either way...

Nah man, never say that. We focus on the negative too much, that's our biggest flaw. I mean we as a society focus on the negative, but for us it's worse because we are born with so much against us.

One thing I noticed as a teacher. If you focus on the negative kids, the other kids will start doing bad shit too. If you focus on the good kids, even the bad kids will start doing good shit (they still fuck up, but they start to try more). It's basic psychology.

That's what we need to do more. But the thing about doing the right thing is, there's really no reward for doing the right thing. It has to come from within.

I concur. That's what the show seems to have been designed to do:focus more unneeded attention on the negative aspects, reaffirm the stereotypes and padded statistics.

We do need to focus more on the positive and ultimately just be more positive in our lives in general. Not saying act as if the problem doesn't exist, just stop giving it sunlight to grow in...

How many people plan on watching this tonight and tomorrow?? The issue tonight is supposed to be The Black Woman & Family...

I for one am definitely going to be viewing this and probably commenting as it goes along. I like when Soledad O'Brien does specials...

I Learned so much from that show , I was seeing the stats on black men and i was like "damn are fuckin up like that ?"

Do we need really need stats to tell us that some of us are fuckin up?
I don't think thats what the focus should be on.

If it took that show for you to realize the 'stats', then you sure are fuckin up ...

No dude, YOU have lost grip. Actually, to lose grip, you actually have to be holding on to something. What are you holding on to niggu?

Have you ever tried to put out an electric or oil fire with water?

What is this "tic-toc" you speak of?

- huh? what have we lost a grip of? OUR COMMUNITY!! if you think we never had a hold to it, then I suggest you google up "black reconstruction era", spend about an hour reading up on that.

lol...have i ever tried to put out an electric or oil fire with water? huh? WTF?

tic toc = what time it is.

It went over ur head.

We already knew what the deal was before the statistics. All the statisics do is make you say "DAAAAMN!" They didn't show black people that were successful without a father. What is being subliminally put out there is "If you don't have a father, you're fucked." Some people make a decision to be successful without a father. I know a kat that just got his PhD....no daddy. There wasn't a story like that.

Have you ever tried to put out an electric or oil fire with water?

lol...have i ever tried to put out an electric or oil fire with water? huh? WTF?

That is a dangerous bit of information you are not aware of. There are actually four different types of fire. In the military they called them alpha, bravo, charlie and delta. Each fire is distinguished by it's cause because they need to extinguished differently. You can't just go throwing water on all fires, because you will only fuel them further.

I will tread lightly here in my interpretation of the great Sean69's metaphor, but it would seem to be that you can't solve all issues the same way, some "solutions" actually only add to the problem....such as this show....

well this thread is doing the same thing...its focusing a lot on the negative of the show and little on the positive

sooooooooooooooooo

1) what issues do you personally (1st or 2nd hand) identify with from the series?

2) what are some solutions that you (directed at everyone) have employed in your personal life that has helped you overcome/deal with said issue?

let's brainstorm ppl

I would say that we are addressing the show's negativity. As it is not a bi-product of the black community, but addresses the black community, it may be dangerous to leave it alone and focus on its positive characteristics. Sort of like leaving a child alone around fire....

i never said we should leave the negativity alone

the negative parts of the show have been cosigned and elaborated on wayyyyyyyyyy more than the positive

so we have expressed our reactions to the show SO let's do what we claim the show lacked....come up with some solutions

Anyone that misinterprets the message as such ... meh. There's probably much shit they've misinterpreted that makes successive future misinterpretations worthless. So that shit does not bother me.

However, I see your 1 fatherless PhD and raise you ... well ... you know ...

Oh, and that was exactly what I was trying to get across.

Juju, what are your answers to the questions above? Im curious.

Mine:

1) That CACs still think/assume that ALL of us are sheep.

2) Not take CACs seriously when they put out series like these.

ok maybe i didn't state my question properly

when i said issues from the series...i meant like the sub topics covered (unemployment and so on)...not the issues you have with the actual show itself

LOL. Juju, ol' conflict resolution lookin' ass. Calm yo ass down.
Apparently the negative parts of this stupid series have not been elaborated on effectively enough, or you wouldn't be asking the question above.
I personally have not made the argument that the series lacked solutions. Don't you understand! This rubbish series was never intended to offer solutions or heck, even start a constructive conversation.
This thread very elegantly verifies that.

1) i'm not hype so save all that calm down stuff
2) yes....i am a conflict resolution lookin ass mofo :D
3) ok...well we are moving past the shows intentions and i'm referring to what we got from it (not only this thread but one of the 1,000 others lol) as you will see in the post below, ppl have mentioned that no solutions were offered so why can't we possible brainstorm some or talk about some that we have used...i don't see the harm in that

no, i think its all over the place too, naming a bunch of problems, but not discussing any reasons why, or answers

yeah, exactly. we have health and education disparities...and den? lol...nothing. talk about underfunding to inner city schools and hospitals or SOMETHING!

or at least talk about health, blood pressure, hypertension and how our diet was adopted, and passed down from slaves and how that affects us..the show mentioned it, then had the professor talk about a salt theory, wtf

I can't say I enjoyed the program I did however find it somewhat interesting. The program effectively captures and reflects the struggles of black familys. But it's not offering solutions or suggestions to better address the issues presented. (truthfully I really didn't expect it to)

I didn't expect it to offer solutions either...why can't we just take this for what it is? I think people are getting on the defensive for no reason. I'm not really getting all the negativity (not from you Mo, just in general).

ok maybe i didn't state my question properly

when i said issues from the series...i meant like the sub topics covered (unemployment and so on)...not the issues you have with the actual show itself

LOL.
Yes. I know that's what you meant Juju. I think what we have here is a misalignment in communication. Read my answers again. They answered your question.
No point in reducing a problem that is fundamentally flawed. Yes?

"Charity starts at home and then spreads abroad..."

I am the solution. You are too. Most of us on this board are(the BGOL paradox). We all are attempting to carve out a piece of this american landscape for ourselves, while enjoying the fruits of life. We chastise one another, and address issues worthy of discussion. We leave our respective communities and enter either through the job's doors or the classroom's.

I am the counterattack to the image perpetuated throughout media that the door must always revolve. What image are you counterattacking?

As the show is "all over the place", the reasons why, or answers/solutions offered, will also be "all over the place."

The ultimate outcome of that discussion would be too messy - not the intention of the CACs that made up the series.

Didn't expect it to either. Strongly disagree that it effectively captures shit, or we'd be having a different type of discussion. Offering solutions to to a flawed thesis is gay.

I remember spending way more than an hour on a paper on this book in JHS. (obviously, not in this country)
Yes, I agree, our community's social infrastructure have deteriorated, and I wasn't insinuating that we never had a grip on our community. We did. Once. Before CACs.
I was actually alluding an ultimate systematic chain of events that lead to the 'slippage'.
Du Bois' over all historical revisionist thesis on black reconstruction in America with imperialist deconstruction of African communities highlights this. Maybe I'm over reading it. Meh ...

lol...have i ever tried to put out an electric or oil fire with water? huh? WTF?

I tried to put out a lasagna fire once with Diet Siera Mist
