Charles Oakley adds Patrick Ewing, Bernard King to Knicks enemies list

Charles Oakley is taking a break in his feud with James Dolan and zeroing in instead on several prominent former Knicks.
Oakley, the longtime former Knick who hasn’t been back at the Garden since his infamous arrest there in February of 2017, said he wanted to “smack” Bernard King and faulted Patrick Ewing’s lack of leadership for the team never being able to win a title in his day.
“He never put us on his back like he should have because every adversity he ducked away from,” Oakley said of Ewing on CBS Sports Radio. “He gave the same f–king answer after every 82 games of the year.”

Oakley, 56, called Ewing “high maintenance” and said everything revolved around the Hall of Fame player who now coaches at Georgetown.
“You got to be special to play with Patrick,” Oakley said. “You had to do so much out of your ordinary just to be on the team, and that hurt us sometimes. As a team, we’re supposed to be close and together. It wasn’t that. We had to make sure he was happy. He didn’t care if we [were] happy or not. That’s a sad situation, and I see why the Knicks won’t give him a job. He treated them bad – inside out. Chris [Childs] will tell you. He was tough to play with, but he wasn’t no problem to me because I understand. ‘Mase’ [Anthony Mason] had a problem with it because Mase always hollered and cussed at him.”
Oakley, a vocal critic of Dolan and the Knicks, was handcuffed and arrested during a game on Feb. 8, 2017 at the Garden and banned by Dolan, who suggested he had a drinking problem. The two are still embroiled in a lawsuit brought by Oakley against the MSG chairman. The game after the incident, Latrell Spreewell, who hadn’t been seen around the franchise since getting traded in 2003, showed up and sat next to Dolan. King was there next to him as well.
“I just don’t want to be around these guys,” Oakley said. “A lot of guys I played with, I just lost respect for them because I went to war for them. I protected them, from Patrick on down. Patrick just spoke up two weeks ago about this. But I could have gotten sentenced in jail for 20 years. Three years later, it’s over with really. It’s a PR stunt.”

Childs made similar sentiments recently, calling Sprewell “a pawn,” in the long-standing feud. As for King, he told Oakley his wife wanted to go to a game, and that was why he was in attendance that night. Oakley hasn’t forgiven him.
“I wanted to smack Bernard. Serious,” he said. “I lost so much respect for him. I can’t even speak to him.”

Charles Oakley says '90s Knicks were held back by Patrick Ewing: 'Every adversity he ducked away from'
In Oakley's assessment, Ewing didn't live up to the leadership standard of a superstar

Despite being in the thick of title contention for the better part of a decade, the 1990s New York Knicks were never able to get over the championship hump. It's hard to fault them. They went against a bevy of all-time great players: Hakeem Olajuwon's Houston Rockets in the 1994 Finals, Tim Duncan's San Antonio Spurs in the 1999 Finals, Reggie Miller's Indiana Pacers in the 1995 and 1998 conference semifinals and the 2000 conference finals and, of course, Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls, who eliminated the Knicks four times during the decade.
The Knicks obviously had their own all-time great player in Patrick Ewing, and in the opinion of Charles Oakley, that was part of the problem. On Monday, Oakley, who played with Ewing and the Knicks from 1988-1998, said on CBS Sports Radio's "The DA Show" that Ewing ultimately held the Knicks back.
"He could never put us on his back like he should have because every adversity he ducked away from," Oakley said of Ewing.
Oakley was not suggesting that Ewing couldn't, or didn't, put the Knicks on his back from a basketball standpoint. Rather, it was sort of a backhanded compliment as to just how great a player Ewing was during his Knicks career. But with that kind of talent, in Oakley's estimation, comes a responsibility to lead, to speak up when necessary, to stand up for teammates when they made a mistake and ultimately be the galvanizing force and voice of an organization.

"Every leader, every superstar in this league, if you go through adversity and you're trying to duck and dodge and you're in the biggest city, it's going to damper your team," Oakley said, citing, among other things, Ewing's unwillingness to be accountable with the press and say tough things to officials and coaches when they needed to be said. "Michael Jordan wasn't like that at first, but he installed it in his game. He seen that if he's going to be getting 30 shots, 30 points, that he's got to put his team on his back. And Patrick could never put us on his back like he should have."

Bear in mind, this is one man's opinion. Take it for what it's worth. Ewing was an indisputably great player who, again, ran up against some of the greatest players in history in his quest to bring a title to the Knicks.

Would the Knicks have beaten Jordan's Bulls or Hakeem's Rockets if Ewing had been a better behind-the-scenes leader? These are easy things to suggest in retrospect, but I'm not sure Ewing had anything to do with John Starks going 2 for 18, including 0 for 11 from 3, in Game 7 of the 1994 Finals. If Starks makes just a couple more shots and the Knicks win that title, Oakley might be singing a very different tune.

New York Knicks legend Charles Oakley apparently doesn't have fond memories of some of his former teammates.
Appearing on WFAN's The D.A. Show on Monday, Oakley said Patrick Ewing's "high-maintenance" style of play hurt those old Knicks teams:
"Even though I said he's high-maintenance, people might take that wrong – he was a high-maintenance player. Everybody in the world knows he was. You got to be special to play with Patrick. You had to do so much out of your ordinary just to be on the team, and that hurt us sometimes. As a team, we're supposed to be close and together. It wasn't that. We had to make sure he was happy. He didn't care if we was happy or not. That's a sad situation, and I see why the Knicks won't give him a job. He treated them bad—inside out. Chris [Childs] will tell you. He was tough to play with, but he wasn't no problem to me because I understand. Mase [Anthony Mason] had a problem with it because Mase always hollered and cussed at him."

Oakley also said he "lost respect" for several former Knicks, including Latrell Sprewell, Larry Johnson and Bernard King, for appearing at a game alongside team governor James Dolan days after the February 2017 incident in which Oakley was arrested at Madison Square Garden.
Oakley has never been shy about speaking his mind, especially as it relates to the Knicks.
After Oakley's arrest at Madison Square Garden in 2017, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix noted the former All-Star has had a "complicated, often contemptuous relationship" with the organization and was rarely seen at the arena.
The arrest came after security approached Oakley during a Knicks game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He was seen yelling at the staff and shoved one of them, leading security to handcuff Oakley and escort him from the arena.
Days after Oakley's arrest, ESPN's Ian Begley noted Dolan had Sprewell, King and Johnson sitting with him at a game against the San Antonio Spurs.
"I'm just happy to be back now," Sprewell said at the time. "A guy named Jonathan [Supranowitz, Knicks vice president of public relations], I've kept in touch with him over the years and he worked his magic and he was able to pull some strings and get me back."
Oakley played 10 seasons with the Knicks from 1988-98. They made the playoffs every year he was with them and reached the NBA Finals in 1994.

If they were pretenders then, what are they now? Who was Ewing’s Robin?

You don’t know what you got til it’s gone.
Starks, oakley, Larry johnson, sprewell, Alan houston, Charles smith, Derek harper, Chris childs, Mark jackson, rod Strickland he had access to all those players and than some.. They just wasn't gonna ever do anything with that squad as far as chips.. They were slot fillers.. You need 8 teams to have an eastern conference bracket for the playoffs.. A slot got to be filled.. Knicks was just there to fill one...thanks for your contribution knicks.. You were the bulls good luck charm and whipping boy

So we have a 90s era player that played for the Knicks saying they were soft. Now will yall dudes stop overrating 90s era bball? Shit wasnt that good, 1 team dominated the whole era. :smh: Oak must be real dissapointed in them boys to openly destroy the brand like this.

Why don’t you give timelines? Houston and Spreewell linked up when Ewing was finished. LJ was on his last legs when they got him to the point he completely changed his game. Jackson and Strickland never got a chance to gel with Ewing. The other cats you named were not number 2s.

It definitely is trying to get the negative press out there against Ewing.

Mark played for 5 yr on the Knicks broke the rookie assist record which he still holds today..they did nothing... Lj, houston, sprewell helped Knicks to the finals where they lost to a young Tim duncan... John Starks , harper, oakley helped Knicks to the finals where they ultimately loss to hakeem

Was this you and Oakley’s agent arguing for more money during contract negotiations?

“I AVERAGED .8 POINTS HIGHER AND .5 REBOUNDS MORE AS A KNICK, PAY MEEEE”!

giphy.gif
a pf that averages a double/double, nice baseline jumpshot, sacrifice his body day in day out, and will whip a nig as s on sight.. You better pay his ass or he walks.. Understand this no oak no protection for Ewing in case somebody wants to put the beats on him

agent me: tell him oak about your protection fee if you no longer here

Oakley:

I remember those games well. Had a front seat to the Bulls vs Knicks match ups. Oakley is full of shit. I saw those games up close. It wasn't Ewing's fault. Blame the team. Blame Riley. Blame management. They were the ones who thought that style would win in the 90's even after the Bulls proved it wouldn't.

i'm not knocking Ewing, but he didnt want to share the spotlight, esp. when he started to lose steps. that was frustrating to watch. everything HAD to go thru him.

Their best team IMO was the 97 team that would’ve beat the Bulls if everyone including Ewing didn’t fuck up.

Charles smith who missed like 9 layups in a row right under the basket

Knick fans were always delusional.. Everybody knew the Knicks were pretenders except knick fans.. It's dam n near 5 decades and ya still go well maybe next yr or somebody that is nice is coming when everybody else know they're not... Madison square garden should've been blown up like 2 decades ago for hosting such a worthless franchise.. My older cousin was a delusional knick fan when I was growing up and is the reason why I hate the Knicks and majority of all ny sports team.. Making me sit in his crib when I came over to play videogames and telling me to hold on and watch some shitty ass ny squad lose mad games..once we about to play his mom/my aunt would be like hey guys you been playing for the past 3 hrs time for you to go home ..id be pissed off cause I wasted 3 hrs of my life watching some crappy ny team lose.. Fuck the knicks, the rangers, the jets, and the yankees for this inner hatred I have for those guys.. Watching the Knicks fall into hell with no way out puts a smile on my face..here's to all the hrs of wasted time and horrible visuals of your shittyness:cheers::cheers::bravo::bravo:

He shouldn't have said it, but isn't he kind of right?

I don’t know Ewing’s number like that but he lost to MJ and then Hakeem in the Finals.

Like I said, I haven’t checked Ewing’s numbers but he lost against all time greats.

He shouldn't have said it, but isn't he kind of right?
He's DEAD wrong because Oak used to get TORCHED BY HORACE GRANT.... Not to mention... Ewing has nothing to do with Charles Smith missing a bunny lay up... For all the dunks and loses, Ewing used to abuse the Bulls bigs... The problem was Grant would have his way with Oakley. Oak had 1 offensive move... A set shot... In a league where power forwards are jumping through the gym, this mf got nothing but a set shot... No post moves... No jump hooks... Just a set shot...

THIS IS WHY I HATED CHARLES OAKLEY... HE WAS A BUM THEN... AND HE'S STILL A BUM

FUCK HIM ... JOHN STARKS... AND CHARLES SMITH

Oakley also ripped Ewing, calling his teammate of 10 years high-maintenance.

“Even though I said he’s high-maintenance, people might take that wrong – he was a high-maintenance player,” Oakley said. “Everybody in the world knows he was. You got to be special to play with Patrick. You had to do so much out of your ordinary just to be on the team, and that hurt us sometimes. As a team, we’re supposed to be close and together. It wasn’t that. We had to make sure he was happy. He didn’t care if we was happy or not. That’s a sad situation, and I see why the Knicks won’t give him a job. He treated them bad – inside out. Chris will tell you. He was tough to play with, but he wasn’t no problem to me because I understand. Mase [Anthony Mason] had a problem with it because Mase always hollered and cussed at him.”
Ewing and Oakley are both in my top 5 favorites so I really hate to see this.

How is it that Oakley takes more than 20 years to start with all this bullshit? If he was a woman crying rape, people would say she waited too long. So this bullshit?

I don't even care if what Oakley is saying is true or not, he seems desperate for attention and it's sorry.

Having said that...

damn shame.

We can't spend the next who-knows-how-many months dismissing whatever isn't the most important thing in the world with "With this pandemic going on this is what he choose to address." It's cheap-- Most people are still living their lives, that's why we're on BGOL talking about this shit.

All jokes aside, I always felt Charles Smith threw the game. We all know the NBA has been fixed. But I'll leave it at that.
No way a dude 6'10 misses that many put backs. No way son.
