Certs..What have you obtained this year or in the process of obtaining?

I've beem going through some personal stuff this year so I haven't really been able to focus to get my certs that I had planned to get this year..but I just enrolled for a free A+ class offered by the city that also offers free N+ and Security+ classes also..only downside is each class is 20 weeks..which really shouldn't take that long but fuck it its FREE..plus they offer night classes also so I don't have to adjust my work schedule..

Well I wish you luck on that one. The great thing for me was my teacher had experience with everything and really worked us through Cisco. Not sure if you heard of Packet Tracer but man, that thing really taught me a lot.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before but I will mention this again..for anybody in the nyc area looking to get some additional skills please check this place out: http://www.perscholas.org/

You get your A+ AND MCTS certs for FREE plus you also get 10 college credits for successfully completing the program..classes is only 15 weeks then afterwards they offer free job placement. I'm about to mess with this so just I wanted to pass on the word.

With a little bit of research I'm founding out there are so many programs in the city that offer FREE technical courses that I would be a fool to not take advantage.

Just for my Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification.

It was the most difficult exam I've taken up to this point. Now its "On to the next one" which will by CCNA.

Bout to start working on going for CISSP. My boy recommended me going after that instead of the Security+. Pay potential is significantly higher as well

Been putting it off for years but I'm going to go for the CCIE Service Provider and Cisco IOS XR Specialist certification. gotta stay focused but will definitely grind it out.

Just finished my Masters of Arts in history and graduating summa cum laude...applying for doctorate programs now

Do you already have the CCIE Routing and Switching or Voice? I made my trip to RTP in 2010.

Got my R&S back in 1999 (still active), figured to go for the SP since I've been focused in that arena for over 8+ years. They just mailed me my 10 year plaque for R&S.

request free visual cert exam suite the trial version on examcollection.com only allows you to do 5 questions.

Wow, having completed the IE is really impressive. I want to try for my IE this year also. What did you do to prepare? For how long?

Back then when I got it I set up a lab at my office using at the time 2500 routers. Now it's a different text. Alot of stuff they had on the exam back then is not on the test today. I think today with all the virtual routers you can setup, it's easier to obtain your own lab and all of the study material that's available makes it a little easier. (not the test itself, just the way to prepare) Companies have set up so many study pods that you can use.

As for me, on one of my computers, I have IOU (IOS on Unix) and XR4U which is IOS XR running on Linux that's setup on my iMAC.

Working on my Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM, CFPP). Which will lead to my raise, I should be done later this year. I work in the health care field.:)

I'm still learning about it myself but if there are any law enforcement officials (police, CO's, and the like) in the Atlanta area, PM me. I got something that you might be able to use.

Is that a normal transition? I passed both my A+ exams but I figured network or security should be the next step. Not saying you are wrong, just asking.

Yeah, I saw that too. Nothing's impossible but that's a motherfucking jump.

Sent from my Cerebrum.

I see exactly what both of you are saying. I'm currently going to community college. Right now I'm taking the Network Fundamental course. From there, I can take one more course for the N+ or three more courses for the CCNA. I'm trying to get my Associate it IT, so curriculum wise, I have to take one's for the CCNA regardless. I figure that I take these courses back to back that lead to CCNA, since they flow right behind each other. Instead of breaking up the flow to grab the N+. I figure once I get the CCNA, the N+ class/cert would be a breeze. I will not be finish with the CCNA courses until this fall and can take the N+ at the end of the 2013. I've got to take all of these course to get the Associates anyway...

Do they really teach the material needed for the CCNA? That's very vendor specific, so that's a bit surpisnig for a school to do that. N+ covers networking in general. CCNA is networking yes, but for Cisco products. Again, not imposible, just weird to me.

My 2 cents would be: If you're tryna get an internship before you finish the 3rd course that leads to the CCNA, I'd say cop the N+ so that you have weight to add onto the resume. I agree however that once you have the CCNA, the N+ is pointless.

I hear you bro.... The class that I'm taking now is a Cisco class. We login at the Cisco Academy, do Cisco labs, and take Cisco tests. All our course material is through Cisco. That way I'm staying on this path, instead of breaking it to get the N+. I'm already employed full-time at a help desk. Not all IT related, but I do support some minor technical issues (VPN, active directory, MS applications, etc...). My goal is to get the degree. The school also offers courses specifically for certifications. The courses that I need for the degree, are the exact courses that are taken for certain certs. I figured that if I'm taking these courses, I might as well grab these certs, while I'm working towards the degree.

You bring up a great point in regards to a good job opportunity. That's something to consider going forward. However the degree is important to me and something that I want to finish. I want a Bachelors eventually. If I stop going to school for work, it would bring me back to square one in he long run. It would have to be a great opportunity in order to stop going to school all together. I've made my mind up to actually follow through and finish what I've started for once.

Just to clarify... If I was working on obtaining only certs, I would definitely take the N+ next. After that, the Security.

Gratitude fam! You keep going at it as well. When I took the first part of the A+, this cat was there renewing some type of networking cert. he told me that networking is where it's at. Suggested CB Nuggets, which looks great, but they're taxing for that info. Professor Messer is a great supplement to the books that you may be using for the N+. If I run a cross anything that may be useful, I'll drop it here. Lord knows that this board has been a great resource for me over the years.

Peace to everyone that's out here striving to better themselves.

I lack the experience to go for the CISSP so I'm dialing it back a bit & taking the exam for the SSCP this weekend. After that going for Security + since my job will reimburse me for the exams & study guides. Gonna also go for HealthCare IT cert and VCP Cloud certs as well before going for CCNA. A brother is hungry for certs to add to the resume & get closer to pulling 6 figures

Got the A+ 801&802.

Will have Network +, CCNA 640-822,816,461,554,722 within a month or so.
