Forgot to mention I also passed this exam!

MCTS-Windows-7-Configuration.gif

Got the CCENT and 3 more Microsoft exams to earn the MCITP cert, then I graduate from Western Governors University next year!

when you get A+ and Net + now do you have to renew it ever few years?

every 3 I believe.

this is absolutely correct - 3 years. I actually got 5 years out of my A+ - got it in 2009, back when it was certified-for-life but they changed my certification in January and now my A+, Net+, Project+ and Security+ all expire in 2015.

Great job brother!

I took & passed the A+ 701 exam last week. I just want to give a heads up... dont over study on the technicalities. Focus alot on printers and troubleshooting, overall troubleshooting process, safety, cabling [types, connectors, lenghts] and scenarios (there were alot of questions that were scenario based). Im not saying to only study these things, but I spent WAY too much time trying to remember the pin counts for particular sockets and slots and shit.. I spent about 2 weeks cramming and I really could have done so in a weekend if I focused on the right things. Good luck. It was a little more difficult that I thought it would be but it wasnt too bad. Oh, and Windows 7 IS covered on the exam. Different study materials give mixed information about that.

Well I still have to take the 702 portion, I will probably do that in the next week or so. Next up is definitely Security+, then Network+. From there I will more than likely start down the Cisco path. My only dilemma is that I am already in a well paying job and I can get on some detail assignments with the IT department but I dont want to take too much of a pay hit trying to change career fields. I just have to see how things pan out. I dont want to invest too much $$ figuring it out tho lol. So after the Comptias I will probably evaluate my options before diving into Cisco.

Just got my Net +, I already got my CCNA a while back but I already had the Net + book so I said what the hell, it cant hurt. Now I got my A+, Net +, and CCNA....now I am gonna chill for a while and start working towards my CCNP in Jan

Just got my CCENT last month and plan on taking the CCNA within a few weeks. I'm using Wendell's cert guide, Boson, Measure up, and 9tut. Can you recall anything that helped you prepare that really stood out? Thanks.

I took the CCNA test twice. 9tut helped me pass that second time, they give you some of the exact questions and simulations from the test. And make sure you get those sims down and be able to do them quickly. The first time I took it, I ran out of time

Thanks for the info fam. I keep hearing 9tut is the truth. And I know what you mean about those sims because my time was getting short. Good luck on the CCNP.

Edit: You probably already know, but www.examcollection.com using Visual Cert Exam program is nice too.

Got my VCP 510 3 weeks ago. Test was pretty hard but thanks to working with TestKing I was able to get a handle on the kind of questions to expect.

I just wanna say this real quick.. resources like that link are a good metric to use but they are also misguiding. Experience and a strong resume are also key to landing those type of well paid positions. I know for most of us that is common sense but I always see/hear brothers talk about what certs they have and how worthless they are. These employers are hip to all of the study to pass methods out here so they look for real world implementation of the skills and knowledge. It is hard (not impossible) to roll up to en employer with just self study certs (no classroom based studies/degree) and no experience and expect for them to pay you 60k+ on a whim. If the next person shows up with even an Associates degree that is IT related and the same certs they will get preference. Again, I know most of you already know this.

ever looked into noSQL databases, mongodb, hadoop etc?

I subscribe to RSS feeds from eWeek.com and some database blogs so I've read briefly about them but have never looked in depth. noSQL is high on my research list because I have some mySQL tasks to do at work and read noSQL might help with that. If I remember correctly, hadoop is used to store non-relational data in a different format than XML. Usually we're talking XML when discussing non-relational data. Again, I'm just trying to remember the little I know from articles I've read briefly. I think Hadoop was developed to store data like social media, etc. You working with any of those technologies?

I forgot to say congrats!!!

Yes, I did some redis and cassandra last year.

Now I'm doing some mongodb for it's spatial geolocation for a location platform I'm working on.

So a mobile app uses the user location and uploads data to a mongodb backend hosted on Amazon AWS.

Ideally I want to use couchbase DB but that is a future upgrade as it makes good use of client side DB storage especially for non-connected states such as mobile.

Thanks! :dance::dance:

I'm behind schedule but I have a couple of more certs I plan to get this year.

I've heard of mongodb but had to look up couchbase. My plan is to get into mobile after I finish the PMP. I do so much project management there's no reason for me not to do it. I ordered the book you used to study for yours and plan to complete my application this month.

How do you like Amazon AWS? I've heard good things about them so I'm thinking about using their service when I create some apps and websites.

AWS runs the town but they can be a bit expensive for smaller traffic sites.

But it's what all the big boys use.

It is not veyr easy to configure though so companies like www.heroku.com has jumped in to fill the void by putting a mgmt layer on top of what is essentially AWS

Another competitor is rackspace in the IaaS space.

Good luck on the PMP too!

I'm in college now working on my BS in Information Technology concentrating on Networking, Admin & Security. I am currently on track to graduate within one year. I have two questions: 1) Should I obtain a cert now or after graduation or a few months before I graduate? 2) I would like some experience in the field, but I have no clue where to start. I went on Dice.com and everybody wants 1-5 years experience. Any advice?

I've beem going through some personal stuff this year so I haven't really been able to focus to get my certs that I had planned to get this year..but I just enrolled for a free A+ class offered by the city that also offers free N+ and Security+ classes also..only downside is each class is 20 weeks..which really shouldn't take that long but fuck it its FREE..plus they offer night classes also so I don't have to adjust my work schedule..
