Man list the year make and model of the car so that we can help you.

Have you replaced the interior speakers?

Do you mean $400 in just equipment or do you mean $400 for equipment and wires and install?

$400 is enough for a amp, subwoofer & install if your willing to buy used equipment.
Install w/ all wiring is gonna be about $125+ depending on where you go.

I bought a used 12" JL sub in a Obcon box off of www.craigslist.org
for $160 and a used 800w Rockford Fosgate amp for $90 from the same guy.
Cool thing about craigslist is everybody is selling stuff locally so i was able to actually hear the subwoofer for myself & knew everything was in working order.

I've always known those two brands to be very good so lesser brands can be had for even cheaper. Of course i'm talking about used prices.

In my other car i have a MTX amp & a Polk Audio subwoofer both of which are very good quality.

What kind of car do you have?
are you going for sound quality or pure base?
do you know what ported and sealed mean?
tell me what you got and what you are trying to do with the $400

Don't listen to these guys clowning. You can get a nice amp included bass canon for about that much. Will give you all the bass you need for inside your ride. Now if you are talking about people hearing it outside, then yes $400 is not enough. But doing that was so 90s.

What you boys mean by "so 90s"

I couldn't help you on this one kid but I'm interested in finding out more about systems because I plan on getting one in the future...

agreed. 400 is barely enough to get a good sub/box. save about 1000 and get some decent stuff.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a pound the ground system it ain't happening but for a little low end it can. I got a JL W1 w/ the box and a 250w Alpine amp for around $400. I wasn't looking for much because its in a single cab pickup and I just wanted a little low end.

edit: I also installed it myself.

Man back in the day I had a 15 Cerwin Vega stroker and a JL amp and me and my boys would see who could pound the loudest down the block. I used to bump Juvies Ha' and that shit would set off alarms and break glass and I only had ONE.

If anyone was into sound that Stroker was a beast with a rod in the middle connected to a magnet about as heavy as the ride.

Good times.

you can never go wrong with Rockford Fosgate subs and amps. Make you the speakers you already have in your car are good. Check ebay if you wanna save money.

for $400 I hope you either have a truck or a hatchback because $400 for both your stuff is going to sound like crap.

Your best option is ebay or getting some shit 2nd hand for that much.

I used to get the Rockford stuff. I had a few 800a2 amps and the HX2 subs. Hell I still have on HX2 12 in my Altima, but I dont really bother with them lately. People around here been having too many problems since they because available at Best Buy and places like that instead of car audio stores.
