can we get a zshare:yes::yes::yes:

A true MC ain't going to move units unless he dumbs down his material. Jay, Nas had to do it.

The vast majority of hip hop fans are not going to listen to raw lyrics. I can think of plenty cats who can spit for days and can't sell two records. Canibus by far was one of the nicest out there but they couldve givin him beats from the hottest preoducers of the day and he still won't sell.

The reason is fans don't appreciate true hip hop talent. Thats why those who are moving units and could actually spit watered they shit down for mass consumption.

Right now, cats like Lil wayne moving units. One his shit is ghost written. Two he's hot garbage but the public loves dude and they buy his music.

Nas first opus ain't move shit but people felt it was a classic album. Yeah that was all gravy but um no one bought the shit. He ain't move units till he put on teh fucking pink suit and started acting like some fake ass mafia dude. He also watered down his lyrics. and dancing in videos with mary J.

A guy like canibus won't sell units. His lyrics are too damn complex for the avg fan who just want to hear a dope beat. What the hot joint now fake ass roger troutman gillamonsta Tpain or some southern tune. Toss in some drugs, money and hoes and you a thug. You move units.

seriously, except for people who appreciate MCing as a true artform, what other fan is going to dig a song with lyrics like these

Gettin' in my way is like jumpin' in front of a car
Breakin' the sound barrier, that means the car is in front of the horn
By the time you hear it blowin', it's too late to respond
By the time you feel it hit chu, I'm gone
I'll send ya' to hell where you belong
So by the time ya' body hits the floor
Ya' spirit won't be in it no more

I wouldve loved if he saw success in his career but hip hop is WWE type shit.

okay since i can't "understand" what canibus is trying to say ( )- i wonder if some of you cats who "know" would mind breaking it down for me in laymans terms and prove wrong my assessment of what i consdier as an overbearing egotist w/ a large vocabulary. (bearing in mind that the true essence of understanding is the ability to relate and relay knowledge to others which may require the use of analogy or simplification but not to the detriment of the overall theme)

eh, I mean it's cool for hardcore back pack hip hoppers but that shit is too raw and undeveloped for me to consider it deep. he doesn't tell stories he just splices some scientific or metaphysical terms into lines about how hard he is and brags about how you can't keep up w/ him. nah nigga, i just can't STAY up w/ you. i get to yawning and drifting off into sleep but it's just a personal opinion.

peace

:hmm::lol::roflmao2:

peace

The vast majority of hip hop fans were too ignorant to understand his lyrics and his flow. Cannibus was and is still way ahead of his time, he will be one of these MC's that will get the proper recognition he deserves when he is out of the game. People talking bout he is just a battle rapper, that is what true hip hop is about battling to prove that you're the best MC. Same can be said for KRS-one and Rakim.

Canibus is goin thru the same shit that Ras Kass has been goin thru. the majority of muthafuckas just aint ready to open their third eye to see the vision they tryin to take it to. they done lapped hip hop twice and waitin for it to catch the fuck up.
any one of you three should be able to do this - i don't care which one.
This dude is on a different level & if your not able to comprehend his material your not going to be able to appreciate his art ---on word play alone he distances himself from 99.9% of hiphop artist - In some weird way as a fan I’m content of the lack of exposure he’s received over the years because sometimes u wanna get away from all the intoxicating mainstream music & just sober up & enjoy some originality/creativity

I always wanted to see bis shine commercially, hes way too talented not to be recpgized, but i think he would have had to of dumb down his music in order to appeal to ignant muthafuckaz to sell units.. bump this thread tho:yes:

okay... but what is the MESSAGE? please, somebody help me out here - anybody :dunno:

if you listened to his music you would know he did way more than spit battle rhymes on his albums. he is ahead of his time.

I disagree.

If he was ahead of his time, he wouldn't have lost to Eminem in a battle? If He was ahead of his time or a genius then he would know how to dumb down his lyrics draw the audience to him then force feed them his style and lyrical power. But he didn't nor knows how to. He got the stamp of aproval from Rakim which should have been his guideline to making rap songs and then take it to the next level but he didn't. Rakim is the superlyrical emcee because he was smart enough to dumb down his lyrics, find simple words and put them together to make sense like no other. It took almost 2 years for people to realize that his rhymes had double to triple meanings. It took three more years for pro-black activist and so-called religious people who normally attack hip-hop to pay that dude his respect because they couldn't find a flaw in his flow or what he was saying. Then many during his time and after copyied/were influenced by his style. Now that's being ahead of his time. Canibus hasn't learned that yet.

I'm a Canibus fan and his failure to rise or change the game was because of that factor and the fact that LL had too many people dick riding him and being bias to Canibus. They wouldn't give him a fare shot. Even Eminem had to dumb himself down to blow up. "My Name Is" was not his first single "I Just Don't Give A Fuck" was, and it didn't move units. The label put out My Name Is and dude sky-rocketed up the charts which is why every album first single release mimicks My Name Is. LL Cool J had a hot ablum when he first came out but "I Need Love" is what got him noticed by the masses. Which is why he switched from battle rapping to spitting something to make girls melt. And yes, tracks/beats play an important part because most people are not listening to lyrics. The BEAT grabs the average person's attention first, then the hook (which has to be catchy), then the way you're flowing to a track (clear enough for people to understand every word you're saying)...that's the formula to a hit record...which Canibus lacked. Even LL learned that when he did "Walking With A Panther"...the beats weren't strong enough or hot enough to grab people so the album didn't sell. Marley Marl had to take over and over see the project...and have the entire album remixed then re-released to the public...and it sold then.

As hot and as lyrical as Canibus is...he didn't find his nitch or his place in the RAP pie. Understand...hip hop is a culture (which he is respected in), RAP is commercial (meaning what sells) and that's where he is having the problem with.

That was his problem -- he was an ILL battle rhymer.
But when it came to making a rap record, he sucked because he didn't know how to create a BRIDGE, CHORUS, OR HOOK.

You can't just sit down and batter niggas in the head for 30 minutes with battle rhymes on a record if you want to move units.

can-o-bitch is wack talking about trigonometry and stars and the myan calendar. GTFO

Unfortunately you hit it on the nail. He does have some material when he's saying something other than how good he is and how most won't get it...but the bold is the truth of the matter.

If a person really understands what they know, then they should be able to break it down to a level where a 5 year old child would understand it....unless that person is bias and just don't want to get it.

Exactly - you got dude's like Jadakiss, Nas and Freeway still fumbling with the ball but they have lyrics, a strong marketing machine and Kanye, Timbaland, and Just Blaze at their disposal but they are baffled like the rest of us at the success of Lil Wayne and T Pain. If you don't put it together correctly people won't buy it and they won't give you a second chance. He's just another dope lyrical rapper that people don't like enough to spend money on - see Fab, see Papoose, see Joe Buddens, see Kane, see Rakim.
the best artists at most creative forms of expression are NOT usually the most recognized. with hip-hop, the absolute best MCs don't usually get to make records. records/songs in hip-hop have been morphed into a industry acceptable template (verse >> hook, verse >> hook). a lot of times the best wordsmiths are not able to confine their talent into that formula.

its really as simple as that!

i've heard cats on the street or in basements that are far better than the lil waynes and kanye's of the world. that is not disrespect to wayne and kanye. just real talk!

commercial success is not (or shouldnt be) the barometer in hip-hop.

good post!
