Building Motivation To Change

I'm making a request. But I do have some questions though. The hypnotherapy I'm assuming deals with hypnosis and I'm not to sure about fuckin with the mind like that. I've always thought that once you start messing with the brain like that then you can be easily manipulated into doing things that you might not have otherwise done more easily. Is there any truth to that?

But I am interested in these hypnotherapy cd's.
Okay, I haven't used these. But I have read up on them and hypnosis and listened to pieces of them. Basically its not like a magician's bullshit tricks or anything. Its just a guy saying things to help you relax and then saying positive things regarding whatever the topic is. It's actually funny to hear the way they use the sound effects on key words. I read reviews of hypnotherapy stuff and one reviewer said they went to eat the next day and had all the key ideas about not over eating pop up in their head. You can listen to it awake or asleep.

IMO its not different than Tiger Woods recording himself saying positive things and listening to it on his walkman over and over. If you think about something over and over you will internalize it. That's all this is. Its no staring at a watch or mental processing loop bullshit and slipping in secret messages.

The hypnoanesthesia shit is proven to work which is why I downloaded it - I hate drugs and it is supposed to help people deal with pain much better.

There are some hypnotherapy joints on Amazon.com. Read some of the reviews and read up on hypnotherapy in general. I was really leery of it myself until I read up on it. Its not the mind control shit we generally associate with it.

Get them all - they are free downloads. Beyond that- what area are you looking to become motivated in? See what motivational tools people doing the same thing used. From your posts you should download the Nick Hall video I posted and then check out his books. He's approaching things from a broad perspective that applies to any field.

I want to change my eating habits, I want to be a vegan and resist temptation from sweets.

Okay so you have clear goals. You should sit down and map out what you need to do and how you want to go about doing it. For instance if you're going cold turkey - just throw out your sweets and anything not up to vegan standards. Then you have to make sure you don't bring anything that violates your rules into the house or on your plate elsewhere. Surround yourself with people who will support you. There are vegan websites with supportive communities and even vegan dating sites. Don't allow people who will thwart your efforts to be around you unless you have to - such as work or immediate family - and limit your exposure to these sources of negativity.

If you need more cheerleading on top of that read the Nick Hall materials. He does a good job of suggesting ways to choose what you want to do and sticking to it.
I'm a fan of organization. Failing to plan is planning to fail. I think you should sit down and map out every serious detail to how you want to be living. You can use a pad of paper, tasks in Outlook or web apps that work with browsers/pc/mac programs/smartphones like Evernote or Remember The Milk. A key part of setting goals and attaining them is planning. When you have larger goals and question your ability to achieve them, set smaller goals that work towards your desired outcome. So if you really think the ability to go 100% vegan is too difficult right away start slower - reduce your meat and animal product intake over time. Set a goal of how much you will reduce it over days, weeks or months. When you meet your goals and see you can be successful it will build your confidence. Confidence is the ultimate motivator. When you put confidence along side desire things happen. If just hearing the word confidence makes you frightful - Fake it. Fake it until you make it.
Make a plan
surround yourself with supportive people
set attainable goals
believe in yourself
track your progress

I know so many brilliant people who just accept doing shit they hate or they dont find rewarding because they don't know how to plan or don't believe in themselves. Grab what you want by the throat and get it. Stay focused and make it happen. Life is short. Don't waste time regretting not doing what you dream of.

Set your mind on something, then do it, it's that simple....

True, I'm tired of dreaming of how much better I can be, I don't want to be one of those people who never discovered their full potential.

Do it. If you fall down pick yourself back up and go at it again. Don't let anyone or anything stop you.

Okay, so you want to change a behavior that is effecting you in a less than healthy way. This is what I have so far. Please add on and contribute so we can build.

First, target isolated behavior
Obtain information about target behavior
Find outside help(internet, library)
Examine the Pros and Cons
Boost self efficacy (belief in ones ability to take action)
Locus of control (center or source, as of activities or power)
View internal v. external visualization
Identify and overcome key barriers to change
Enhance readiness to change
Comtemplation (intending to take action within a specified time)
Preparation
Action
Termination

It sounds so easy, why the hell is it so hard to change??????????????

Self-mastery is one of the hardest things in the world to accomplish. In fact it's an ongoing process for the rest of your life. I've been working on the last 3 years. I'm finally seeing improvements in myself even though I have a long way to go. The more serious you try to master yourself, the more results you will see. In fact you will see a dramatic change in your lifestyle. Hell I'm about to take this a step further and go to an AA meeting to master the 12 step program.

Transtheoretical model and stages of change. Great framework.

Okay, I am starting to understand the self mastery, it is hard but I'm on track.

this is one of the main reason's I continue to show love to BGOL...the information on here is priceless.

thanks fam

No I haven't. I've read Chicken Soup for the Soul. I went to Amazon and checked out The Seat of the Soul. That book looks pretty interesting. I'm going to see if my local library has it.

Please do. It seems right up the alley of what you were speaking in this thread. I think I bought off of Amazon used for like $2.

Why do you want to be a vegan?

Well I don't know if I would be technically classified as a vegan because i'm still eating wild caught fish, but mainly because of all the steroids in the meat. You know what they say "if you know better, do better"

This is an excellent thread... and I don't want to derail it.... but this post reminded me of some hilarious shit I saw recently

I echo what a few have said already...threads like these is why it is hard to leave BGOL. Appreciate all the material shared. Many thanks.
Agreed. Although I come to BGOL less and less, posts like this make paying the dues well worth it. Thanks to OP from 2010.
