Lupica: Kids pay the price for the love of guns — and expensive coats

‘I want that jacket’ is apparently the way it starts this time before a gun ends it. In that moment the skating rink at Bryant Park could just as easily be Rockefeller Plaza, where the tree is up and that place will soon feel like the capital of Christmas

Corey Dunton, 16, allegedly saw a status symbol jacket on another teen and wanted it for himself — shooting the wearer and an innocent ice skater in the process.

So this time shell casings, from bullets fired by another dirty little handgun in New York City, end up on the ice at the rink in the Winter Village at Bryant Park on a Saturday night.

It was apparently over a jacket this time, a status-symbol Marmot jacket, starting a beef in Midtown Manhattan the way expensive sneakers can start one sometimes at a playground: Corey Dunton, 16, down from the Bronx to Bryant Park with some friends, seeing the jacket on Javier Contreras, allegedly deciding he wanted it.

A few minutes after that, according to police, another teenager of the city with a gun opened fire, not caring that 14-year old Adonis Mera was in his way. The shooter and the gun never seem to care who might be in the way, on a street corner in Brooklyn, or the Bronx, or a rink in the heart of Manhattan where the skating is free, one crowded with happy people at the beginning of the holiday season.

“We have seen this all before,” the outgoing police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, says. “There is an incident over something. A gun comes out, and a shooting is back on the front page of the newspapers.”
Adonis Mera, 14, was shot in the back while ice skating in New York's Bryant Park, in the line of fire between the shooter and a coveted jacket. It is unclear if Mera will walk again.

Last week there was a story in the same papers about how there wasn’t any kind of shooting in New York over a 24-hour period. You know it’s something that hardly ever happens here, even at a time when the city is safer than anybody could reasonably expect it to be; when it fights harder and better against illegal handguns coming here from moronic gun-loving states down South than any other big city in the country.

Then comes Saturday night in Bryant Park, and the sound of gunfire returns, just off Fifth Ave., because Corey Dunton is allegedly told that he can’t have an expensive jacket that he wants. Or Dunton is told to get lost. Or maybe do worse than that.

The real start of summer, early June, another weekend in the city, a 15-year-old girl from the Bronx named Sarah Rivera was shot in the leg trying to shield a neighbor’s baby girl from gunfire. A day before that, an 11-year old girl named Tayloni Mazyck was shot on Gates Ave. in Brooklyn. She was with her mother and a 7-month-old niece and that time it was a 17-year-old, Kane Cooper, who allegedly decided to open fire on somebody from another gang and when he was done Tayloni Mazyck was paralyzed.

A 17-year-old accused of shooting her in Brooklyn in front of her own home. A 16-year-old said to be the shooter at Bryant Park, in the shadow of the New York Public Library. It was Fifth Ave. this time because it can be anywhere, no matter how much and how well this mayor and this police commissioner have done to take as many guns off the street over the past 12 years.

Says NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly: 'We have seen this all before. There is an incident over something. A gun comes out, and a shooting is back on the front page of the newspapers.'

Back in June I sat with Robert Mazyck, Tayloni’s father, on another Sunday afternoon outside the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, part of New York-Presbyterian Columbia, at 165th and Broadway. He had come down from reading the Bible to his daughter.

“This time it happens to my daughter,” Mazyck said that day.

That was the first week of June, Tayloni Mazyck being put in a wheelchair because of a stray bullet. The first week of September a 1-year-old boy named Antiq Hennis was shot and killed as he was pushed across a Brooklyn street in a stroller by his father. The two indicted for that shooting were Daquan Breland and Daquan Wright. Breland was 23 at the time, Wright was 19.

“These are our streets,” Robert Mazyck said in June.

It wasn’t a street in Brooklyn on Saturday night, it was a skating rink in the shadow of a grand, regal library, skaters flying around the ice until one of them got carried out of the night, this time a 14-year-old boy being the one not feeling anything in his legs.

Another child hit in New York City. Another teenager with a gun. Because of a jacket this time. What is the real cost of the jacket now?

Notorious 'Biggie' jacket has set off much jealousy-driven violence in New York

The utilitarian down jacket — $700 object of alleged shooter Corey Dunton’s desire — was the cause of bloodshed in at least two previous instances.

biggie11n-1-web.jpg

The Marmot Mammoth Jacket is filled with down, has a zip-off hood and boasts lots of pockets — all for about $700 or $800. It's also a status symbol among teens in New York, leading to shootings like the one in Bryant Park on Saturday.

Corey Dunton's alleged shooting spree at Bryant Park on Saturday was not the first time bullets went flying in New York because of the Marmot Mammoth coat, also known as “the Biggie.”

The utilitarian down jacket, which usually runs between $700 and $800, was the cause of bloodshed in at least two previous instances.

Raphael Ward, 16, was shot in the chest earlier this year on the Lower East Side during a scuffle with a group of teens who coveted his coat.

The 11th-grader had just bought the jacket.

Malik Jenkins, a high school senior, was struck by two cars in 2010 after a Bronx trio tried to steal his coat.

All three men were indicted in 2011 for the 18-year-old’s murder.

The coat was mysteriously discontinued last year, a Paragon Sports sales rep told the Daily News.

The rest of the coats in stock went on clearance for $200, and sold out a few weeks ago, the rep said.

Are these coats the real deal or Canal Street specials?

That's a nice concept but the reality is that these particular type of animals can't learn. No teacher in the world could tame these fools and get them to learn. They were raised to be animals and they will always be animals. It's like getting a pitbull who was raised to dog fight, then take him in as a house pet... It will never work. :(:smh:

Damn, not feeling this at all!

I understand he destroyed many lives, but your comments seem as though your only solution to the issue is to rid every place of all "animals".

How about taking a look at his upbringing? There is so much negativity reflected on us through news, videos, shit - general conversation. He could have had no father, no mentors in his community, no way to showcase his true talent, so he leans on whatever he can find.
If he's not steered in the right way, violence can become his upbringing. Now you have a violent young boy who go to prison and learn to be violent as an adult and released. Hopefully, an OG in the joint will pull him aside and give the game, but how likely.is that?

 Put that bottle down homie!! What the fuck does a mortgage have to do with a animal ass juvenile shooting up innocent people trying to lift a coat!?!?! GTFOH with this bullshit and go get some help!!!

Gadzooks man don't take what I said literally. I'm comparing the "I don't give a fuck about anyone but me" mentality.

And I'm not putting the bottle down...I'm pouring shots for all the vets today. Drinks on me brother...what are you sipping on?

I don't own a jacket that costs that much and I'm a grown man, business owner, making 6 figures. Its about Values people. His mom bought him that coat? My kids will never wear a $600 jacket until the day comes when they live on their own and buy that shit on their own. I wouldn't let my kids get a job and buy it, they couldn't get it as a gift, they could not wear that shit under any circumstances. Fuck them coats and every single thing they represent. Nigga r u in the arctic? A mountain climber? a skier? An extreme sport enthusiast? then GTFOWTBS!!!

And I'm not blaming the kid for getting shot. Its fucked up. I'm just saying a mom buying a kid that coat is buying into that materialistic ghetto paradigm. Those coats are status symbols. What kind of status should a 15 yr old have who lives inthe ghetto?
lol@crying about tax dollars. so many idiots...where do you start?

Based off some of the comments...you would think this guy shot 30 people...and is stil looking for more shoot. Im all for taking responsibility for your actions...but Man! You gotta love the amount of forgiveness that Black folks have for other Black folks. They accept apologies in a heartbeat from White folks that shit on them for years...but wish the worst on a black kid that they ASSUME is the devil.

If you all consider him a ruthless, unchangeable person cause he shot someone over a coat......then you all might as well not celebrate all the murderous Vets that will be celebrating the holiday tomorrow. SHooting someone poor over a coat ...shooting someone poor because corrupt people gave you orders to shoot. Which is worse?

Good post.

I posted something similar to this when Pres Obama and his Wife did that little publicity stunt for that school girl that got killed in Chicago. We seem to pick who's lives we choose to value. I'll admit that some folks are stuck in their ways..and no matter how much you try to help them..theyre just lost causes. But, theres a shit load of so called "street niggas" that can be saved.

Put your emotions to the side sometimes and try looking at some of the people you frown on as FAMILY. Do that and i guarantee you wil slow down a lot of the knuckle head bs; Saving the lives of those that you CHOOSE to care about and those that you dont.

No ones saying defend scumbags. But what I am saying is try reaching out to the "scumbags" before its too late.

Exactly. They miss the big picture. Kids aint born evil, alot of shit has to go wrong for this to happen, and cats don't get it. The kid has to pay for his crime, but this is alot bigger than a bad kid making a bad decision.

All of this "fuck em all' mentality will only beget more of the sdame. The kid goes to jail and becomes someones bitch, is he gonna come out rehabilitated or more fucked up? Dudes dont get it.

Don't trip .. Dudes is always tough on crime till its their brother or sons neck on the chopping block

Kid is like 16 and dudes act like he is hitler... he made a really stupid mistake and should pay for it ABSOLUTELY ... but he wasn't born that way and he can still make a contribution to society after he pays for his crimes

Ur right. Dudes aint from the hood. I know ALOT of cats who survived Harlem in the 80s and are straight squares now, raising kids you would never know some of the shit theyve done. People can grow. Its just that living in the hood its hard to grow.

That's a nice concept but the reality is that these particular type of animals can't learn. No teacher in the world could tame these fools and get them to learn. They were raised to be animals and they will always be animals. It's like getting a pitbull who was raised to dog fight, then take him in as a house pet... It will never work. :(:smh:
U have no clue what ur talking about. Unless youve worked with young people in this population u really ought to STFU. All but the most damaged people can be rehabilitated. Our society doesn't believe in rehabilitation unless your white and rich...and of course really didn't mean it.

What could he possibly be smiling about?

“F--k all you n-----s!” Corey Dunton screamed as detectives escorted him in handcuffs out of the Midtown South Precinct stationhouse en route to court.

Dunton, 16, was apprehended early Sunday after he all but confessed on Facebook to spraying the skating rink with bullets on Saturday night. His alleged target, Javier Contreras, 20, was hit with three rounds, and 14-year-old skater Adonis Mera was shot in his back. Mera’s family fears he will be paralyzed.

Police said Dunton fired at Contreras after the alleged Blood was unable to boost Contreras’ $600 Marmot Mammoth jacket.

When The News’ scribe asked if the police account of the Mammoth-related squabble was accurate, Dunton got personal. “It wasn’t over a jacket,” he barked, still sporting a sickening smile. “It was over your mother.”

But NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Monday that being thwarted in the attempted jacket theft was indeed what drove Dunton to fire on the crowded skating rink. “He says something to the effect of ‘I want your jacket,’ ” Kelly said, recounting what Dunton told Contreras. “The victim says no, but obviously more heated words may have been used.”

Dunton left the ice, but soon returned and spotted Contreras. Dunton cleared several skaters out of the way in front of him and squeezed off at least eight shots, Kelly said. Witnesses identified Dunton, a Bronx resident, as the gunman, Kelly said.

But his father, Corey Dunton Sr., disputed that version after his son was ordered held in protective custody without bail at his arraignment early Tuesday.

“He’s only a kid. Did you see a weapon?” the father said.

Not just Marmot: Belts also a favorite for thieves
bryant.jpg

The $680 Marmot coat that sparked the Bryant Park skating rink shooting

Saturday is second only to designer belts on city crook’s “must steal” list, police sources told The Post.

“The big thing out there is belts. Belts are getting robbed,” a police source said, adding that expensive belts made by Fendi and Gucci are the top targets for unruly teens and violent thugs looking to up their fashion game.

“As far as clothing, the hot items is belts, especially the Ferragamo belt,” the source said, referring to the $349 belt that made headlines when a black teen bought one at Barney’s but was then cuffed by cops outside and sued claiming a clerk thought he couldn’t afford the pricey purchase.

In September, two men were shot over a Hermes belt in Brooklyn and this summer a Brooklyn man was robbed at gunpoint of a Ferragamo belt, police sources said.

Corey Dunton, 16, allegedly tried to mug Javier Contreras, 20, of his Marmot Mammoth parka on the Midtown rink’s ice – and then shot Contreras with a .22-caliber handgun when he refused to hand it over.
iPhones and the Marmot jacket are still hot targets for fashionable muggers, the sources said.

“It’s like everyone wants a Mercedes and, for thieves, Apple products are the Mercedes of electronics,” a police source said.

“When I was growing up it was the leather bomber jackets and now the Marmot jackets are the same thing,” said another police source.

“It used to be sneakers, but no more. That was an ‘80s thing. Then there were North Face jackets they were stealing, but even those petered out. Now it’s Marmot jackets and Apple products. Those are the most popular,” said another police source.

Air Jordans have been targets since the late-’80s and continue to sporadically spark violence.

The Michael Hoban leather 8-ball jackets were a popular target in the early ’90s.

In the early 2000s it was the T-Mobile Sidekick smartphone.

iPods were popular targets since they were introduced in 2001, with violence related to their thefts spiking nationwide in about 2006.
