Gov. Tim Walz confirms killing of Minnesota Democrat and husband in 'politically motivated assassination'

A Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband were killed, and another politician and his wife were seriously injured early Saturday in a “politically motivated attack” when a madman posing as a police officer turned up at their homes and opened fire, authorities said.

Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were gunned down in their Brooklyn Park home shortly after 2 a.m.

The pair were killed after the gunman targeted Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in their Champlin home roughly 5 miles away.

The Hortmans were killed.


The Hoffmans were rushed into surgery and are in stable condition, officials said at a news conference.


Gov. Tim Walz called the shootings “an unspeakable tragedy,” and said the incident “appears to be a politically motivated assassination.”

The suspect is still on the run, despite making contact with police in the aftermath of the Hortman double homicide, according to Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley.

Officers dispatched to Hortman’s home as other units investigated the Hoffman shooting discovered a car outfitted with flashing lights to look like an SUV squad car.

“When they arrived at Melissa’s house, they noticed that there was a police vehicle in the driveway with the emergency lights on and what appeared to be a police officer at the door coming out of the house,” Bruley said, adding that the suspect was wearing a vest, a badge and other equipment, such as a Taser, “very similar to mine.”

“When our officers confronted him, the individual immediately fired upon the officers, who exchanged gunfire, and the suspect retreated back into the home,” he continued.

“It was not a real police officer. This is someone that clearly had been impersonating a police officer who uses the trust of this badge and this uniform to manipulate their way into the home.”

Gunfire was exchanged, but the suspect escaped on foot.

Mark Hortman was alive when Brooklyn Park cops entered the home, but he died as they attempted to deliver life-saving measures.

As the mayhem unfolded, first responders rushed the Hoffmans to a nearby hospital.

The couple had each been pumped with multiple bullets, but survived the attack.

A manhunt is on for the suspect, who was wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants.

Cops ordered a shelter-in-place for the three-mile radius surrounding the Edinburgh Golf Course near Melissa Hortman’s home.

“Police are looking for a suspect in multiple targeted shootings who is armed and dangerous,” Brooklyn Park Police said in an emergency alert sent to residents at 5:30 a.m.

“Suspect is white male, brown hair, wearing black body armor over blue shirt and blue pants and may misrepresent himself as law enforcement.”

The founder of an infamous Minnesota-based nonprofit convicted of hatching a $250 million welfare fraud scheme was ordered by a judge last week to forfeit her Porsche, designer handbags and millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains.

Aimee Bock, the 44-year-old mastermind behind the Feeding Our Future scandal, was found guilty in March on federal charges of wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy in connection to the nation’s largest COVID-19 fraud scheme.

Bock, who along with dozens of predominantly Somali co-conspirators pilfered pandemic relief funds from a federal program meant to feed hungry children in need, is awaiting sentencing for her lead role in the scandal.


A federal judge issued a preliminary court order on Dec. 30 compelling Bock, who is not Somali, to give up an astounding amount of cash and several of her prized possessions.

Bock was ordered to forfeit about $5.2 million in funds from her personal nonprofit bank accounts, her Porsche Panamera, some 60 laptops, iPads and iPhones, a diamond necklace, bracelet and earrings, and her Louis Vuitton purse and backpack, according to multiple outlets.

Aside from buying fast cars and designer handbags, defendants allegedly sent “millions of taxpayer dollars in fraud proceeds” to East Africa and the Middle East, Bondi claims.

Dramatic video purportedly shows the moment an ICE agent opened fire and killed a 37-year-old woman who attempted to barrel her SUV into the officer’s path in Minneapolis Wednesday morning — as the mayor furiously demanded the agency “get the f–k out” of the city.

In the footage being widely circulated on social media from varying angles, ICE officers approach a plum-colored Honda Pilot and order the driver out of the vehicle after she blocked the path of their truck.

As one of the agents attempts to open the door, she quickly throws the car into reverse before trying to speed forward in the direction of another agent in her path.

That agent dodges the SUV, swings around the side and fires three shots before the car crashes into a white sedan parked nearby on the side of the street.

Video taken from another angle showing the incident from further away appears to show the SUV run into the officer who fired the deadly shots as he leaps out of the path.

Following the gunfire, a woman repeatedly screams “no! no! What the f–k? What the f–k did you do? You’re f–king criminals!”

Later in the footage, blood-spattered snow can be seen as the woman apparently filming approaches the crashed SUV — where someone is seen leaning over the driver’s side seat from outside the vehicle, apparently attempting to render aid to the morally wounded driver.

The deadly shooting comes amid the largest deployment of immigration agents — including some 2,000 officers across several agencies — since the start of President Trump’s second term.


A furious mob of protesters jammed the area around Portland Avenue and E. 34th Street where the shooting took place, which is less than a mile from where George Floyd died under the knee of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin in 2020.

Chauvin was convicted of murdering Floyd in 2021 and is serving a 21-year prison sentence.

At a news conference following the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey accused the agent who fired the deadly shots as acting recklessly.

“They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly: that is bulls—t. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying,” he said, pledging a full investigation into the incident.

“To ICE: Get the f—k out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being here is to create some kind of safety and you are doing exactly the opposite.”

DHS assistant secretary for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin said the incident happened while ICE was conducting “targeted operations” when “violent rioters” began blocking the streets.

“One of the violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them — an act of domestic terrorism,” she said in an X post.

“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers.”

Embattled Minn. Gov. Tim Walz fired back “don’t believe this propaganda machine” and promised the state will conduct “a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.”

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has long been a vocal opponent of immigration enforcement actions in the state, said “ICE must stop terrorizing our communities and leave our cities.”

The incident echoes a similar shooting in October in which US Border Patrol agents shot an armed woman in Chicago who had tried to run them over after they were “boxed in” by 10 other cars.

A federal judge dismissed charges against the woman — who survived — of using her vehicle “to assault, impede, and interfere with the work of federal agents in Chicago” the following month.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey did not mince words when addressing the public about an ICE officer who gunned down a woman during an immigration operation Wednesday.

“To ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here,” Frey said during a fiery press conference after the shooting.

“Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite,” he added.

Frey was just one of numerous leaders who sounded off as footage of the shooting emerged, which captured an ICE agent firing at a 37-year-old woman who tried to speed off in her SUV in the direction of one of several ICE agents ordering her out of her vehicle.

The woman was a protester attempting to block ICE officers carrying out an operation in the middle class neighborhood, Department of Homeland security for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement, which accused her of attempting to kill the officer.

“People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Long term Minneapolis residents that have considered so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy, are being terrorized, and now somebody is dead. That’s on you,” Frey said.

“And it’s also on you to leave. It’s on you to make sure further damage, further loss of life and injury is done,” he added, promising to “work towards justice.”

Other local lawmakers also expressed their outrage.

US Sen. Tina Smith (D, MN) said the victim was a legal resident.

“A US citizen has apparently been shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis. I’m gathering information, but the situation on the ground is volatile,” she wrote on X.

“ICE should leave now for everyone’s safety. Please be safe Minneapolis,” Smith added.

And firebrand leftwing Minneapolis Rep. Ilhan Omar echoed them all.
