Breaking News: Amazon NOT Coming to NYC, Says "Deuces"

Ehhh, Yes and No.
They had the dude leading the opposition on the news here and what he said made sense.
NYC was giving 3 Billion Dollars to the Worlds Richest company while 5 blocks away they claim they don't have
the money to fix Housing Apartments.....While saying they have to raise the MTA Fare .25 cause they don't have enough money
among many many many other complainants about money....
At the end of the day this was a backroom deal that shouldn't have been
Amazon walked away unwilling to negotiate a more sensible deal with sensible goals

Biggest Issue was Appropriation of Money
Yes. Someone at the last minute realized how really bad this would look and said no.

This is different from spending money on nycha or the mta. It's an investment in new York city. That 3 billion was supposed to come back and more. The city is going to get money back from fixing project apartments and trains. Ultimately the right palms weren't greased so the deal fell through.

NYC hubris just cost themselves a lot.

People think of Amazon as the delivery service. But they don’t get it.

Look up Amazon Web Services.

Every major site in the net runs on Amazon. Every major finacial company runs their shit there. Every major corporation.

This was a tech hub, not a distribution center. Lots of young kids in Queens could have gotten internships on a tech career path and had a home town tech company to work for.

Now they can work at the bodega.

This was an L.

New York niggas think the world revolves around them so they won’t see it.

There’s a reason NY and NJ have some of the highest rates of people moving out of these states.

That bodega job is high risk. Should come with hazardous duty pay. Plus it'll take you no where. But to work with a company like Amazon nothing but opportunity.

The job potential is why I said NYC needed Amazon. Anyone living in NY should want that company within their state if for no other reason job potential.

I agree on the greedy politicians being the root to why NY is not getting Amazon. You pull these companies to your state with tax incentives. You'll never get them with questions pertaining to future taxes.

Lol at these comments man. Jesus, corporations have trained the fuck out of plebes. Have y'all regurgitating their talking points pro bono.

NYC doesn't "need" Amazon. Google moved in and is expanding just fine without these insane concessions demanded by Bezos. NYC is a world super capital and one of the most desirable markets for corporate presences. The entire model of demanding these concessions without bending at all in the direction of the communities impacted needs to go. The entire premise is flawed.

You're totally missing the point, not to mention Amazon already established themselves all over the globe. Now to be honest I'm not sure if they've setup in Russia yet. But let's be real, "NYC needs Amazon more than Amazon needs NYC."
1. Amazon is not global yet - compare the delivery process outside North America -
global = prime 2day in the EU, Japan Taiwan, Caribbean etc etc - Amazon's ultimate goal is to get Walmarts logistics to your door - anywhere

2. you don't even comprehend what NYC is if you feel that NYC needs Amazon- that's almost as naive as thinking NYC needs an Olympics. More jobs are always welcome - but NYC is home to much much more powerful entities than Amazon

The Mayor and Governor were naive and mistaken in thinking they could make this deal on a short time table - the last person that had that kind of power was named Robert Moses

Amazon wasn't "getting" a 3 bill check, they were getting tax breaks and such.

Y'all do know the movie and tv industry gets similar tax breaks in NYC, right?

And I'm sorry but what other mega corps are planning to open in NYC and hire? We can complain about corporate welfare all day but they polled Blacks and Hispanics in the area and the majority were in support. Jobs are better than no jobs, regardless of pay rate.

Now that area can continue to be empty parking lots and a 1/4 filled office building.

So much winning.
why are you so gleefully ignorant?

please use google street view and look around Long Island City
please take note of the multi national banks and companies that already have campuses in place and all of the new sky rises under construction....

And create jobs, and stimulate the economy in an area thats basically dormant, and bring in state tax revenue....

Please tell me what we gained by Amazon not coming here.
more glib ignorance- every small city in the US prays that they can be as "dormant" as LIC -

Long Island City is a single neighborhood in NYC - anywhere else - in any other state - LIC would be considered a thriving town in its own right

AOC is so very naive - the facts don't matter - all that will matter is in 2 years opponents will be able play she was gloating over lost jobs and use her vids in attack ads

I wouldn't count on that haha, she has demonstrated her mastery of social media time and again. We can safely presume she'll dunk on any of the dumb boomers who flex on her

More importantly this was her response to the shrill hand-wringing that suggested she was in anyway responsible for this outcome.

Citigroup Shrinkage Leaves 1M SF Hole At One Court Square

The same 1M SF hole that Amazon was going to fill and more...

I'm not the LIC expert but I've been in the area for business multiple times in the past year and its no financial district.

Once again, you don’t understand Amazon. Amazon is as global as it gets. The shopping part is a toy. Right now, I can spin up 100 computer instances in the US east region and replicate them in US west, europe and asia within minutes. They have data centers everywhere and duplicate your data across them for redundacy. Pretty much unlimited capacity and unlimited storage around the world.

JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, all the investment firms in manhattan, their data and programs are all on Amazon.

They have a separate product just for the government and they host a lot of government data and services.

Right now, if he wanted to, Bezos could shut down over half the wall street firms and a large chunk of the internet sites you love in a second. Who else can do that?

I know that but you STILL giving the world's richest company a hand out that is not needed.
Listen, somethings cannot give you a "get back", sometimes you just have to do what's right.
They were getting this big handout with no accountability whatsoever. That's mainly what the leading guy from
the opposition wanted to negotiate. You can't make backroom deals and expect everyone to be ok with it.
Fuck em...NYC doesn't need them
This city has the MOST Fortune 500 companies than ANY other city in America

Morning Joe wasn't blaming her - they hung the blame on Cuomo and Blasio for thinking they had the clout to bypass the city council and state assembly and community boards and bum rush this
It took Disney a decade to get in NYC, It took 15 years for Atlantic yards to just get approved
It almost took 20 years to get Yonkers and Aqueduct casino and track projects in play longer for Monticello race track and casino

What Morning Joe jumped on AOC about was gloating and repeating incorrect / ignorant information

AOC is social media savvy - and a star but she is a baby in politics - they don't need to attack her the GOP will use her as a boogie man to taint dem candidates in conservative areas

attack ad in W. Va: xyz is endorsed / influenced by AOC - play edited clip of AOC gloating that Amazon is leaving - while inserting headlines about number of jobs Amazon took with them - close ad with high light of Green New Deal proposal about gov't providing for those unwilling to work

Shit as long as she stays hot - the GOP will have people throwing money AOC election campaign to keep her around as long as possible
Think Hillary Clinton trying do healthcare in 93

You’re right. NYC doesn’t need amazon. And Amazon already has offices here too. Trust, Google is getting tax incentives too. Google’s headquarters is by the port authority where the internet pipes come into the city.

My main problem is people thinking there is a 3 billion dollar check that now goes somewhere else. Also I think the jobs could have helped and that amount of income could have helped a lot of local businesses.

100% correct on all accounts.

LIC is not a financial district and never will be -it is an established business district with a rapidly growing residential population -
LIC was GREAT 15 years ago - now it and Greenpoint is gentrification central

someone is going to lease the space- easy access to public transit - 5 to 10 minutes away from midtown Manhattan, lots of nearby residences...

They ALL are getting tax incentives. Once again, no one complains about the movie industry getting the royal treatment in NYC.

Lets keep it a stack - Besos is an easy target because of the eat the rich zeitgeist coming from the far left.

He'll be ok.

Meanwhile that city owned land that could have been put to use generating tax revenue and jobs will continue to sit dormant.

uh not Bezos
I KNOW Amazon's services and reach-
you don't understand what NYC is -
and by this post I see you really don't know how investment and multi national banks do data.... there is a real difference between public facing - consumer / ecommerce / service / access portals vs the world of over night lending, FIX networks, trade routing, various merchant nets, etc - not to mention local and disaster recovery site redundancies in place for data of the above listed including any data hosted on AWS -

in any case -the networks and services Amazon provides - isn't NYC's heartbeat - not even close

its the difference between essential and necessary

Amazon’s major competitor, China’s Alibaba probably gets $5B in government grants every year. But here we are crying about giving a corporation that wants to hire Americans a break in taxes.

Some people have no idea of the global consequences to these anti-corporation, tax the rich policies.

France tried all of this a few years back, now there are riots in the streets of Paris because businesses and rich people left, and the government was forced to raise taxes on the middle class.

miseducation - a tax break is not cash - its a series of discounted rates on future taxes - public didn't get that
the movie industry gets a break but its not like NYC is competing with Vancouver

Amazon didn't understand the phrase "when in rome..." - and it really is the fault of cuomo and de blasio
especially cuomo - he grew up in ny politics - he knows better

JPMChase gets free electricity for its offices in NYC- stuff like that is standard....

revenue from what you call dormant isn't even a drop in the bucket for nyc

apples and oranges - the chinese government owns a share of Alibaba
As for France- America could raise the tax rate to +60% on high earner incomes and increase capital gains to +20% and would still be the lowest individual tax rate in a 1st world country

Time will tell if this was an L for the city or not. ...but stuff like this isn't the reason people are leaving NYC and NJ... people leave because of cost of living, property taxes and weather mostly. Amazon may or may not have done some good or bad things for the area, but it most likely wouldn't make it cheaper to live there or in the surrounding areas.

I understand where you're coming from bruh but I think the landscape has changed significantly. It's changed so much that even pantomiming concerns about what Trump voters (and the perpetually confused "Independent Centrists") think is a total lost cause. Folks are quick to dismiss AOC's political savvy at their own peril. She's honed in on a winning strategy that movied beyond traditional campaign finance (read: PAC contributions) and messaging geared towards politically active ppl. How? By talking past the dumb-dumbs that comprise Trump's base and seeking to recruit new voters who have traditionally been disengaged from DC fuckery. There's no reasoning with 90% of MAGA-ites... conversely there's no need to worry about how bs GOP ads will play in areas amenable to that kind of messaging. Medicare for all and the Green New Deal are polling quite well... and ultimately AOC isn't on any ballots in 2020 so it's a non issue imo.

I feel you my dude but Google is quietly expanding to about 20k jobs in NYC with no egomaniacal concessions from the city. These are literally the wealthiest companies on Earth. There's no reason at all for Dems to cheer Amazon's union busting, community averse, feudal demands especially in an NYC context (this ain't Reno, NV my G).

Fuck 'em.

I heard that the skyline in Long island City is bigger than Charlottes.
