The slick Rick thing was a different era and he wasn't going for street cred. Slick Rick is my favorite rapper, and it was also his story telling, and rap was so new his accent was a gimmick that worked then.

I've posted many British rappers and Americans just don't fuck with that accent just yet. It's possible that it could've worked out but he can't be blamed for being afraid to try it. At this point, what he did WORKED , and now that he's got all these cosigns , he can do it and fuck up everybody lol.
