Spelman College announces a record-breaking $100 million donation — the largest-ever single donation to any HBCU

A $100 million gift to Spelman College is the largest single donation to the private Atlanta school and also holds that record for any historically Black college or university, officials announced Thursday.
The historic contribution comes from Ronda Stryker, the longest-serving member of Spelman’s Board of Trustees, and her husband, William Johnston. Stryker sits on the board of directors of Stryker Corp., a Michigan-based medical technologies firm founded by her grandfather. Johnston is chairman of Greenleaf Trust, an investment banking firm.

The college will use $75 million to fund endowed scholarships for future students. The remaining dollars will go to renovate dormitories, to develop an academic focus on democracy and public policy, and to provide flexible funding to support other needs.

Dr. Helene Gayle, who became Spelman’s president in 2022, described the gift as “transformational” for the women’s college that enrolls nearly 2,600 students. Gayle said she was brought to tears when she learned of the gift.

“...(T)he ability to secure the future for the kinds of young women that I see every day on campus was just awe-inspiring and incredibly, deeply emotional and deeply moving,” Gayle said in a phone interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
She said it also heralds a significant moment for the nation’s HBCUs, which have long received far less philanthropic support than their non-HBCU counterparts.

“I hope this is a message that says HBCUs that already punch well above their weight are worth investing in. We know that there’s a huge return in investment,” Gayle said.

Last week, the United Negro College Fund announced during an event in Atlanta it received a $100 million unrestricted grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. The UNCF plans to use the money to create a pooled endowment fund to be shared by about three dozen HBCUs nationwide, including Spelman.
A 2021 report from the Century Foundation found the size of endowments per full-time student at private non-HBCU schools was, on average, seven times larger than that of private HBCUs. Among public colleges, non-HBCU endowments averaged about three times the size of those at historically Black schools, according to that study.

Stryker previously has donated about $70 million to Spelman, said Gayle. That includes a $30 million gift in 2018 for the Center for Innovation & the Arts, construction of which is slated to finish next year.

The philanthropist joined the Spelman board 27 years ago and currently serves as its co-vice-chair. In a statement, Stryker said she feels “strongly that education can be both powerful and transformational, especially for women.”

“I have seen first-hand the enormous impact financial investment has generated for Spelman’s highly talented students. It’s important to me that all women be provided an opportunity to explore their talents, challenge their self-doubts and realize the power of achieving individual success,” the statement said.

Spelman aims to remove financial barriers that make it hard for many students to attend, and the new donation will support need-based scholarships, Gayle said. About 40% of students are eligible for federal Pell Grants, awarded to low-income students, and 80% of Spelman students get some kind of need-based aid, she said.

Spelman’s average annual cost — which includes tuition, fees and living expenses minus the average grants and scholarships for federal financial aid recipients — is about $29,000, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard.

“It breaks my heart to have letters and notes from students who clearly could use the experience here ... whose parents have to take out large amounts of loans just to keep them in,” said Gayle.

Gayle hopes to raise additional dollars so that, at some point, Spelman can meet the full need of its entire student body. That would take about $500 million more, she estimated.

Spelman sophomore and student trustee Zoe Shepard, 19, said the school’s traditions and sisterhood were big reasons she chose to attend. This donation will open doors for students who couldn’t previously consider Spelman because of the cost.

“I also was really touched by the idea that someone was just invested in Spelman and saw all the things that we see as students and the things that I cherish about my own Spelman experience,” said Shepard, a health science student from Cobb County.

The college also plans to use some of the donation to support academic work in public policy and democracy. Gayle said that planning is still in the early stage. And as soon as possible, she said Spelman will begin to update residence halls, some of which lack air conditioning, and make other student housing upgrades.

The donation coincides with the 100th anniversary of the college’s name. Though the school dates back to 1881, it became known as Spelman College in 1924.

I guess I gotta be the bad guy. Miss me with the how much did you donate crap. If you don't see the issue with this being unvetted then you are part of the problem of black institutions being bought off.

So what does the white woman who donated this money want from black people and black women?

Money comes with strings attached, I'm not going to praise white people going into black institutions and setting their own agendas.

Yeah, I know! I ain't a damn bit a' good! When I was in college, the stories about Spelman hoz and their freaky ways were legendary!

They’ll make it a pseudo co-ed school and push more of the super liberal, feminist propaganda on so-called black women.

After they are indoctrinated then they will be promoted up the chain to leadership positions in whatever field of study to push the Rockefeller agenda. (Or the new benefactor’s agenda e.g Stacey Abrams pushing the agenda of the Council on Foreign Relations)

I see your viewpoint and I think it speaks to the larger issue of Alumni not donating so we wouldn’t have to ask for handouts,

Goes into research mode to see more about this org.

So this company Stryker is a stock I own because they make medical equipment that every hospital in the world uses.

She probably buying votes and supporting some government contracts she has through the Biden administration. Word on the street is that they are going to try to have all women on deck to sway the vote.

Ukraine is probably in need of a lot of medical equipment and guess who probably provides the equipment. She might not be make a donation as much as a business investment. $100m is a drop in the bucket for a $5/10 billion war time contract.

I guess we are going to get a bunch of brainwashed black women talking about foreign politics and how we should help. White women are the new influencers and infiltrators. This money is only the start

Not surprised this type of money is coming in an election year. It's almost like clock work when the natives get restless.

Too bad they are paying off the wrong people. LOL still gonna lose by a landslide.

hey good news is real women are slowly starting to wake up and take back their Femininity and giving back

feminism to the demons..

Spelman is literally a gated communitty. Ain’t no sneaking into that bitch. I’m sure someone might have pulled it off at some point, but they didn’t live to tell the story.

It’s a spectrum. On one end you have the Daddy’s girls that as soon as they get away from home they fuckin everything moving. On the other end you have the ultra feminist lesbians who want nothing more than to ascend to some DEI pedestal in their career. Then you got the middle, it’a minefield of perpetual sexual harrasment/rape victims and cool chicks trying to find a high value husband before they bid is up.

The lady giving the money has been on the board of Spelman for 27 years. She’s knowledgeable about what goes on there and is a believer in the power of education for young women.

thats for giving back bill cosby money & taking his name off the building.

lots of open & dl faggot dyke bitches running around...

They need to use some of that money to put AC in those freshman dorms. It's wild how much money that school costs and the students have to cook during the hot months of the year.

Then the ones that love should donate more

Lol. Right.

So it says a lot when their isn’t enough love to donate more.

The other side of the reality is that the economic levels of HBCU graduates doesn’t translate the same way as PWIs, unfortunately.

It’s even uglier when if I start talking about graduation rates, career and major choices as well.

The HBCUs I graduated from, mass communication and liberal studies are the biggest programs.

100% Agree, but I will say this....

#1 - would giving a recurring $25 a month really hurt? If 10,000 alum gave $25 a month that is $250,000 a month a college could use for whatever.

#2 - you can also write those donations off your taxes

But trust me I do understand because you know Mass Comm, Liberal Studies, and Sports Management are our biggest majors....

Then the ones that love should donate more

I was just telling someone the other day that I doubled my alumni giving when my loans got discharged. I am donating $80 a month from $35. You right though because I know some alumni that are doing good and when I ask them are you donating, it gets really quite...

I definitely agree and understand, and great job donating.

I think a lot has to do with trust. Trust that the money's going to the right place and used for the right reasons.

Plus when it's time to give money most people

Yes, $25 shouldn’t hurt, but there is definitely a psychological and trust thing attached to donating.

I will also add this because I went to a PWI for graduate school, Alumni always giving big boy donations.....This is one of like thousands and trust me ain't no damn agendas being pushed....

The George Washington University Receives Record-Breaking Gifts

March 10, 2014

Entrance to SPH building

WASHINGTON—The George Washington University (GW) today announced three gifts totaling $80 million that will address – in collaboration with other institutions – many of the world’s public health challenges, focusing on prevention of disease and promotion of wellness. The contributions are from the Milken Institute, the Sumner M. Redstone Charitable Foundation and the Milken Family Foundation. In honor of these transformative gifts, the GW Board of Trustees has approved the renaming of the School of Public Health and Health Services as the Milken Institute School of Public Health and the establishment of the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness.
“These extraordinary gifts collectively represent the largest donation ever received by the George Washington University,” said GW Board of Trustees Chairman Nelson A. Carbonell, Jr. “Such a generous contribution to the university demonstrates a commitment to the health of people all over the world.”
In the spirit of collaborative philanthropy, the gifts include:
  • $40 million from the Milken Institute to support new and ongoing research and scholarships;
  • $30 million from the Sumner M. Redstone Charitable Foundation to develop and advance innovative strategies to expand wellness and the prevention of disease;
  • $10 million from the Milken Family Foundation to support the Milken Institute School dean’s office, including a newly created public health scholarship program.
“For decades, Mike Milken and Sumner Redstone have exemplified philanthropy of the most visionary and powerful kind,” said George Washington University President Steven Knapp. “These new resources will greatly enhance our university’s capacity to address global health challenges with life-altering solutions.”
“The Milken Institute and the Milken Family Foundation have long worked to advance public health and medical progress,” said Mike Milken, chairman of the Institute and co-founder of the Foundation. “Sumner Redstone and the Redstone Foundation have partnered with us in previous efforts and we are honored to have them join in these new initiatives centered at GW.”
Mr. Redstone said, “GW has long been a world-class center for public health research, scholarship and action. I am proud to join the Milken Institute and Milken Family Foundation in supporting this great institution’s efforts to help fight some of the biggest health issues of our time, and give millions access to healthier and longer lives.”
“Washington, D.C., is the center of global public health policy, and GW boasts the leading academic public health institution in Washington,” said Paul Irving, president of the Milken Institute and a member of the School of Public Health Dean’s Council. “We are delighted to support the talented public health scholars and students of GW and look forward to helping the university extend its reach and impact even further. This continues the longtime commitment of the institute to improving lives around the world by enhancing health.”
In recent years, GW and the Milken Institute have worked together to develop a range of public health initiatives, and today’s announcement commits both organizations jointly to promoting prevention, health and wellness around the world. In 2012, the Milken Institute’s D.C.-based FasterCures center hosted the Celebration of Science, an event held in part on the campus of GW that brought more than 1,000 leaders to Washington to reaffirm the importance of bioscience. In January 2014, the Institute and the CDC Foundation co-hosted The Atlanta Summit on Public Health and Prosperity, an event focused on advancing global public health in which leaders of both the Institute and GW actively participated. Both institutions share a passion and a pledge to further GW’s contributions as a thought leader, educator and global convener in the public health arena.
As part of the Milken Institute School of Public Health, the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness will develop solutions to many of the world’s most complex public health challenges. Advances in treatment and cures have been rapid, but the benefits for public health have been muted as these strides are largely offset by poor nutrition, insufficient focus on prevention and wellness, environmental factors and lifestyle decisions. With its location in the heart of Washington, D.C., the Redstone Center will work closely with other major U.S. and international health institutions and schools of public health to drive change.
As part of the Milken Family Foundation gift, the school will be led by the Michael and Lori Milken Dean of Public Health; and the Dean will award Michael and Lori Milken Public Health Scholarships, creating new opportunities for talented students and scholars at the school to become leaders and catalysts for global public health.
“These remarkable gifts mark the beginning of a new phase for the School of Public Health,” said Dean Lynn R. Goldman. “With new resources, innovative ideas and collaborative action, we can drive improvements in public health across America and the world. The support and engagement of the Milken Institute, the Sumner M. Redstone Charitable Foundation and the Milken Family Foundation begin a new chapter in our growth as a 21st century center of global public health leadership.”
The formal dedication of the new Milken Institute School building, and of the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness, at 950 New Hampshire Ave. N.W., will be held this spring. Nearing completion, the nine-story, LEED-certified Milken Institute School building will bring together seven academic departments and all programs under a single roof, allowing the school to hold classes, host conferences and foster dialogue in a central location in Washington, D.C.
Since its founding nearly a quarter century ago, the Milken Institute has made improving public health and speeding cures a priority. Its research has detailed the global costs of mounting obesity rates and the economic burden of disease; the Institute’s Best Cities for Successful Aging index helps communities across America promote healthy aging arrangements. Annual Institute events such as its Global Conference and Partnering for Cures conference convene prominent scientists, policy makers, Nobel laureates, business leaders and philanthropists to focus on health challenges and solutions. Since 2003, FasterCures has worked to increase resources for medical research and to speed the time it takes to get important new medicines from discovery to patients. (See more about the Milken Institute’s work on health here.)
The Milken Family Foundation, since its founding by Michael and Lowell Milken in 1982, has been dedicated to helping people lead better and more productive lives through education and improved health. Its gift in support of the dean and scholarships for talented students is consistent with an esteemed history of recognizing outstanding educators and providing scholarships to deserving young people.
The gift from the Sumner M. Redstone Charitable Foundation is the latest chapter in that organization’s transformative philanthropy. Through the foundation, Sumner Redstone has contributed more than $200 million to charities and institutions around the world, with special focus on innovative medical research. Mr. Redstone has donated $35 million to FasterCures to fund research and patient care advancements in the treatment of deadly and debilitating diseases. In addition to FasterCures, recipients include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Keck School of Medicine at USC.

I definitely agree and understand, and great job donating.

I think a lot has to do with trust. Trust that the money's going to the right place and used for the right reasons.

True and I will say most schools usually have a annual or bi annual event to go over financials showing where money went and etc. Typically the alumni department will have an outside accounting firm review the books to make sure shit went where it's supposed to go, but I do get the TRUST factor...

It's interesting to me comparing PWI;s and HBCU's...Alum at PWI will write a check with no issues....Not that way with some HBCU alum....
