SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds
suffered in his capture near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday, a senior NTC
military official said.

National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters earlier that
Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he
tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked.

"He was also hit in his head," the official said. "There was a lot of firing against
his group and he died."

There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

A senior NTC military official now claims Colonel Gaddafi has died of
wounds sustained in his capture near Sirte. Earlier NTC reported
Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs.

The NTC earlier said it would provide confirmation of Gaddafi's
capture within hours.

NTC leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil will address the Libyan nation shortly.

According to Reuters, Gaddafi was wounded and captured near
Sirte while trying to flee in a convoy which was attacked by NATO.
A NATO official says the alliance is checking reports of Gaddafi's
capture.

The Netherlands' prime minister, however, confirms Gaddafi’s
detention.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said that the war in
Libya is “over.”

White House officials say they monitor the reports but cannot
confirm Gaddafi’s status.

A Libyan government fighter says Gaddafi was hiding in a hole
in Sirte, shouting "don't shoot, don't shoot."

An NTC official says the head of Gaddafi's armed forces, Abu
Bakr Younus Jabr, was killed during the capture of the Libyan
ex-leader.

The news comes shortly after the NTC forces took control over
Gaddafi's home town of Sirte.

TRIPOLI, Libya — Fugitive Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi died today from wounds sustained during capture near his hometown of Sirte, according to reports that were confirmed by Libyan transitional authorities and independent journalists.

Amateur video broadcast on TV channels showed Gadhafi’s purported corpse: a man who appears to be the deposed leader lying in the street, stripped half-naked and splattered with blood. Bystanders, who are chanting, “God is great!” kicked him.

The 20 seconds of footage became instantly iconic for the Arab Spring protests: a despotic Middle Eastern ruler forced out of power after a popular uprising that turned into an armed rebellion. The image of Gadhafi’s bloody face is sure to send chills among other besieged Middle Eastern rulers such as Syria’s Bashar Assad and Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Another video broadcast by Arab satellite news stations seemed to show Gadhafi captured alive. The chaotic video shows Gadhafi, bloody and in a military uniform, being pulled from the hood of a truck and pushed into a standing position. At one point he seems to be talking to his captors and gesturing.

Members of the National Transitional Council, the interim authority, confirmed the death to journalists in Tripoli. An al Jazeera reporter with revolutionary forces in Sirte said on air that fighters had shown him Gadhafi’s body and belongings such as a shoe and a watch.

Re: Video shows Gadhafi Alive when Captured

I don't know why they keep saying the Rebels killed him.

NATO dismantled his protection and state security (army, police), allowing his enemies to kill him. Otherwise, the rebels would have been slaughtered.

So, I see that you understand that BEFORE you participate in the crime.

In the criminal justice system, I can be given the death penalty even if I didn't pull the trigger, but participated in the crime.

And by NATO, you mean US missiles and drones.

Gadhafi messed up though, he shouldn't had have his son ramble on that the river will turn into blood. He should have stated that the military is coming in to establish order. Instead of hiring mercenaries, he should have hired his own people to 'arrest' people. Otherwise, he would be in power.

He should have also stated that the military was coming in to establish order and arrest people to combat the propaganda.

He gave the UN a reason to step in and come up with a 'peacekeeping' mission by NATO. NATO was just as culpable in killing him as the gunmen by disabling his security apparatus.

What does Gaddafi's death mean for Africa?

Rebels accused of executing former
Libyan leader and son Mutassim

Human rights groups and Gaddafi's wife Safia called for an independent
investigation into the deaths, which robbed victims' families of the chance
to see Gaddafi put on trial for his murderous acts.

Both Gaddafi and his son were filmed or photographed alive and relatively
uninjured after their capture on Thursday, before both died of multiple
gunshot wounds.

Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,
said: "It is unclear how (Col Gaddafi) died. There is a need for an
investigation."

Describing footage of Gaddafi's last moments as "very disturbing", he said
that if the former dictator had been executed: "That would raise issues
that a crime had been committed and we would have to look at dealing
with that. It is very clear under international law that summary executions
are illegal.

"You can't just chuck the law out of the window. Killing someone outside
a judicial procedure, even in countries where there is the death penalty,
is outside the rule of law."

It raised the possibility that rebel soldiers could be pursued for war crimes.

Amnesty International, meanwhile, called for "a full, independent and
impartial inquiry" into the circumstances of Gaddafi's death.

Several videos of Gaddafi after his capture near Sirte show him walking
and talking to his enemies. His body was later photographed with a clean
bullet hole in the left temple and bullet wounds in his abdomen and chest.

His son Mutassim, meanwhile, was photographed smoking a last cigarette
and holding a bottle of water, almost uninjured, before being shot in the
neck.

Re: Video shows Gadhafi Alive when Captured

EO 11905 is not exactly ambiguous legal speak - it's one of the most straightforward pieces of legal documentation you will find. In Section 5, subsection G, it clearly states that "No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination."

Do you have facts, or is this just innuendo ? ? ?

McCain Says U.S. Should Consider Use of Military Action Against Syria’s Regime

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) Sunday called on the United States to consider military action in Syria, where president Bashir al-Assad’s regime has used violence against anti-government protesters seeking democratic reforms.

“Now that military operations in Libya are ending, there will be renewed focus on what practical military options might be considered to protect civilian lives in Syria,” said McCain, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Jordan.

“The Assad regime has spilled too much blood to stay in power. Its days are numbered, but it will use those days to murder more of its own people,” he said. “In this way, there is no moral distinction whatsoever between the case of Syria and that of Libya. The question is, what can be done about it?”

As in, what can McCain & Co., say that the President should be doing about it, and is not. Or, what is the President trying to do about it, and McCain & Co., can say, he shouldn't.
