Both taught important lessons of black fatherhood or lack thereof.

Menace had more colorful characters as opposed to Boyz where after Doughboy they were pretty stale.

Scene for scene, the edge goes to Menace.

Charles Dutton's short speech>>>>>>>Furious' even though Styles gave a thorough breakdown.

And who in Boyz could match Chauncey's character, or Bill Duke's short but memorable spot?

I watched Boyz in the Hood again recently. It's an ok flick. It wasn't as good as I remembered. I did kind of laugh at the name Furious Styles. Cool name. But no one has a name like that for real.

I still can't believe that Ice Cube, one of the iconic gangta rappers, is now Ice Cube, family movie guy. He came a long way. He really did well for himself.

My favorite movie of life in the ghetto from that time was Fresh though. That was an inventive movie with a fresh spin on the ghetto kid concept. Fresh was like a ghetto version of Yojimbo or Fist Full of Dollars save that the kid didn't need to kill anyone directly to destroy all the criminals that were ruining his community. I loved the use of chess to show how Fresh was raised to think. Fresh is an underrated movie during that era.

1) Don't ya'll tell anybody, but I cried at the end of Boyz N the Hood.

3) Lorenz Tate's character scared the shit out of me!

2) I'd give South Central propz also.

All were entertaining and all had their distinct message. And each had some thin plots at times.

Yeah that movie got really slept on for some reason. The part that really stood out was the nonsensical violence that took place when the little kid beat the dope dealing gangster in basketball.

One part I never understood though is why Fresh killed his friend's pitbull so brutally. Hung the motherfucker from a rope then put bullets in him. Like WTF!!!

It was a slept on movie.

I didn't get the Pitbull thing fully as well. Near as I could tell from the ending is that Fresh was burning out on his life. He was becoming hollow inside and he couldn't take care of the dog properly because he didn't have a home, so he put it down so it wouldn't have to live a miserable life without his friend to take care of it. He had been kicked out of his aunt's house and it was unlikely he could have brought it there. On the streets the dog would have been used in dog fights or become a violent street dog. So he felt his only option was to put it down.

Poor kid was under tremendous pressure inside and no one to talk to or help him. He did his mission to give himself and his sister a chance. Then he cracked. You just really felt him cracking at the ending after you had watched all he had been through. No overacting or directness in that movie.

It was all subtle storytelling and acting. You could feel the pressure on the surface, but you didn't really see the full effect on Fresh until the ending. At least Fresh gets a good rating on IMDB. Peopled that watched the movie put it on par with Boyz and Menace. I think it was the best of the bunch because of how restrained it was. The story carried the entire film.

Even the actors were mostly no names at the time and it had the highly underrated Giancarlo Esposito, who I like in almost everything I see him in. Even his current character Gus in Breaking Bad is an example of his acting talent.

am i the only one that realized that the light skinned cat that was getting jacked at the drive thru ordered fries for himself while getting jacked.. Now thats ghetto.. and something that should of been edited out in the movie. Worth a watch..

In Fresh I think he killed the dog because he had to prepare himself for the real possibility that people close to him were going to die with the gambit he was playing. Also for the possibility that he may have to pull the trigger on someone if his plans went sideways.

Besides his sister and chucky the dog was closest thing to him and if he could kill him without hesitation then he could kill anyone he had to going forward. You saw how he played and left chucky with those robbers. How he set up that coke dealer to get killed and watched it like a movie sitting on the hood of the car. How he set up the dude that killed his girl and watched him get beat to death in front of him.

Fresh had to do some cold calculating shit and he knew he couldn't afford a soft side if he was going to survive it.

Both of them are classics but I have to go with Menace on this one!

I gotta go with Menace, it was just raw and real. To date it's prolly the most raw and gritty movie I have ever seen that had a lasting impression on me. At the time there wasn't any other movie made that engaged my attention from begin til end. It was like u were actually in the movie or apart of the story being told especially if u were in that age group where u'r slightly rebellious and tryna find u'r way in life as the main characters in the film were. Like I said, it was raw and unapologetic.

With Boyz n da hood even though the story had a good message, it was just too hollywood. It wasn't gritty enough like Menace was at the time.

Yours Truly......Professor

Menace to Society was raw. I remember being shocked leaving the theater at the movie. I enjoyed the narration in the movie it gave you the opportunity to understand Caine's thought process behind some of his decisions.

Menace just had too many quotable lines. Also, the music from Menace was perfect. Classic movie, I'm going to watch it this weekend.

yea but chucky had it coming cause he was running his mouth everywhere he went"yo we running the base for Esteban!!" etc

twenty years :smh:

I know fam. Fuck it, dont think about it.

I remember seeing them shaking bodies in Menace. Had me scared as shit. Imagine seeing that in real life as a kid ?

I did. I was like 8 or 9, with my pops one night, he had just came home from Germany and we got robbed at knife point at the gas station and my pops hit the dude in the face with a hammer from under the seat. He fell into the pump, hit the ground and shook for a minute before he passed out with a mouth full of blood. I thought he was dead. Police came and shit. Niggas was laughing and shit. Just standing there talking and laughing. He asked me not to tell my moms, she didnt like violence at all (but she married a MARINE. WTF?).

My dad had to rock me to sleep for weeks man.

:smh:

CO SIGN.

I had a friend just like Odog. Couldnt hang with this dude off the block because he stayed in a gunfight for NO FUCKING GOOD REASON. Menace came out and everybody compared him to Odog and he started acting worst.

I loved my homie but damn, I just didnt get that blazing guns shit. Got shot n the face when he was 19 and till this day dont NOBODY really know how he died.

:smh:

menace is one of the greatest dark comedies ever.

I see what you did there.

oNE

Boyz N The Hood is the better movie..............Menace II Society was more entertaining:cool:

Boyz had more depth, Menace had more flash.

The plot and characters was better developed, better actrs as well.

The Main character was poorly acted in Menace, its why he didnt see many other roles. Larenz Tate was a tour de force though. He lit up the screen.

Menace has way more quotables tho. I say a line from Menace at least once a week. Every time its cold, I say: "We are a tropical people, let the Europeans deal with this madness"

Boyz in the hood touched on various aspects of black life in the hood, Menace dealt with mainly the poorer part of the ghetto.

Like both films ...nod goes to Boyz in the Hood it had an element of HOPE.

Fresh was great, the dog was like a pawn on the chess board

I'm not voting

Both too equal of classics to me

Ain't no movie coming out today touching that shit

Early to mid 90s >>>>>>>>>>

Was involved in both. Met Singleton on set, told me he was a fan of my work. I found out later how a fan he was.

Met Cuba too. phonies high school ninja ever. I was like mid 20's and this dude looked like my Uncle back then.:lol:

Worked on Menace too, both good flicks, but Menace by a lot for me. Boyz had too much preaching and Cuba in it.

if you listen carefully after he says that Wax said"Who the fuck i look like,Alice, bitch??"

:lol::lol::lol:

Eiht told me they adlibed a bunch of that shit, that's why some people like the acting, and some don't.

I loved it when Pooh was kiling bitch ass Chauncey. "Look like Kaine whooping yo ass!!"
