BOYZ IN DA HOOD-vs-MENACE II SOCIETY !!!

Still got the softspot for Boyz since it was the quintessential coming-of-age flick for me. Menace aint nothin' to be messed with (Big fan of the Hughes too) but Boyz just feels better down the long run.

One day I will tell y'all the real about the director and the movie. I wish I still had the uncut version.

I know that there's an NC-17 version of Menace out there, but I don't know nothin about an Uncut version of Boyz. Spill it!

I don't know its a hard decision for me. One movie had fine ass Nia Long while the other had Jada P Smith. I'm more of the likes of Boyz in The Hood due to Nia Long having that nice silky smooth hair as compared to the pine comb things Jada was sporting.

Menace was a way better movie to me, but I'm thinking without Boyz, it wouldn't have been made. Do yall remember that Menace sountrack...Damn, why don't they make movies like those anymore.

all i want to know is why in both movies
soon as a brotha try to get up out the hood somebody kills him.

that shit was a subliminal brainwash

Menace is by far a better movie in all aspects

But when Cuba Gooding goes past Nia Long covered in blood an Nia shouts..."What Happened"

I go "powerful fuckin movie"
But Menace is like that every other scene...so many memorable moments.
So many quotables.

Boyz In the Hood was the Hollywood version (veteran actors, bigger budget and better script). Menace was that raw though!

in Clockers, that was a different story..strike was threatened to be killed by
"andre the giant"(keith david) and rodney(delroy lindo),who wrote"BITCH YOU IS DEAD!" on his car

The films kind of compliment each other. They deal with many of the same themes but are coming from somewhat different perspectives.

Menace is the much darker film of the two. You never get the sense that Kane is ever going to make it out of his situation. As the film progresses you realize that his fate is sealed.

Boyz is more optomistic. It focuses on one of the guys who "Made it out", so to speak.

Boyz had a better story and more appealing characters IMO

Menace was better and more stylish in terms of the filmmaking on display.(Cinematography, lighting, etc.)

In the end it all depends on which approach you prefer.

Yeah, I remember that flick...kinda ironic that it was very obvious Strike didn't really know what to do with his life yet he was mentoring a fatherless child.

boyz n da hood was cool, but it was too hollywood, too cliche

"kid grows up in the ghetto, kid runs with wrong crowd, do a lil' dirt, experience a tragedy, wises up, & goes to college"

menace II society was more realistic

"kid grows up in the ghetto, kid runs with wrong crowd, do a lil' dirt, experience a tragedy, wises up, too late - karma is a bitch, now kid is 6' under"

didnt the hughes bros also made dead presidents?
yes they did.
right after they did menace..
they also did From Hell with Johnny Depp (the Jack the Ripper story).
they didnt fall off after menace,
they did what every good director should do.
fall back and let their films speak for themselves.
as soon as john singleton did the same thing,
he became one of the highest grossing black directors/producers in history.

and to all the young bruhs reading this thread,
a glimmer of inspiration for you.
BOTH of the directors AND writers of these two films were under 25 when they made these movies (hughes bros, 21 singleton 23).

john also became the first and youngest african-american director nominated for an Oscar, as well as the first african american nominated for best original screenplay.

fuck tryin to be the next rapper to go platinum.
strive to be the next brotha to make history.

First nominated for screenplay, ... no.

Boyz was cool it had a good message and I most def liked Larry Fishburne's character but I don't think I would have liked it as much if Cube wasn't in it. None of those cats in Menace were that well known at the time and I thought that shit was raw. Menace was definitely the more enjoyable flick

Menace II Society

I could pop that joint in right now and not fal asleep. Me and da fellas used to watch this all the time in college. There are so many quotables (funny parts) that it is ridiculous. At the same time, you could watch it and respect it for what it is, ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES!

co-sign.....menace is top 3 all time with me. too many quotables in that movies for me to mention. the homies still talk about that movie like we watched it yesterday....sam jackson had maybe five minutes in the movie but his scene was classic...."nigga don't you owe some money....naw but here you go!"

In your personal opinion, which movie you think hit much closer to home

Cidade de Deus

Niggas in Compton and South Central L.A. might as well be spoiled little school girls on their way to Disneyland compared with how crazy they are and how bad they got it down in the Favelas. ...plus it's hot and stank all the time, and you know how niggas get to acting a fool when it's hot.

"Boyz In Da Hood" gave you the 80's gang lifestyle and "Menace II Society" gives you the 90's gang lifestlye.!!!

Boyz N da Hood came out in 1991 before the 1990s began to develop it's identity as a decade and it still feel very 80s, IMO

Menace II Society came out in 1993, the 1990s is beginning to establish it's identity as a decade, clothes, hair, music overall vibe..

Menace......

"hey bitch, stop following me around this muthafucka. you gettin on my nerves"

"hurry up and buy"

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

3:44 AM an I am pecking away on my computer...well...it's Sunday morning.

Boyz in the Hood had a better impact. Now, I was never into the gang thing. I was however from a home with a single mom, however my mom wasn't the strong charactor that Angela Bassett was in this movie, and my dad was closer to Lawrence Fishburn's other popular charactor...Ike Turner.

What made Boyz N the Hood better to me is the fact that it was more heartfelt in it's message. It showed how kids who grew up in the same place can come out completely different, and the differences had a lot to do with positive role models.

I don't know what Furious Styles did for a living in that movie, but I DO know that he didn't sell drugs and was on the legal as to provide a positive father figure to his kid. What is missing from black homes isn't necessarily the father...but the POSITIVE role model father. The "I bust my tail to provide for you so you can have food on the table. I don't hit my woman. I provide for my kids. I live my life legal so I have no fear of the police" type of father.

I had a father who lived with my siblings,my mother and I. But since he was Ike Turner incarnate, he brought nothing but negative to the household. Furious Styles tried to change the world through the only person he could...his son. Menace II Society was a decnt movie, with upstart actors as well, but was far from the powerful message that Boyz N the Hood had.

I'm outta here before Colin Powell comes.

That explains a lot. You got your ass beat as a kid. Imagine If your dad found you with your tranny porn?

Crazy to think those movies were made so cheap but were shot so great. Actors were cheap and we didn’t realize how great actors careers we were watching.
