Langa, who was with Mayor Menino's security detail, tried to walk the man away when he became combative. The suspect was apparently charged with assault and battery on Langa.

You're misinformed. You must not see high value political figures very often.

I live here in DC and see the President's detail and car pool all the time.
They sandwich the Pres limo between black Suburbans, SS leaning 1/4 the way out the window with thick body armor and MP5 and M4 Carbines muzzles out the window.

On foot, his immediate detail, the inner ring, have handguns (The A.S.P. 9mm or .40 Glocks), but the outer ring walks with their automatic slung over the shoulder.

Although I agree with most of your post, I disagree with one important point. The ASP is not issued to the SS (as a duty FA). The ASP was produced in limited numbers (right around 300 units). The ASP has a capacity of 7 rounds, with no provisions for a hi-capacity mag. The ASP is not in production now, nor has it been for over a decade. The ASP was developed/produced for covert operations more than for PP, or Asset protection. As there is no exact answer for the question what do SS agents carry while on duty, one could deduce that they would carry either a Sig, Glock, or HK. As these weapons are issued to LEA's nation wide, and have been tested in most field conditions.

Say you hate someone, and he is protected by his brothers and sisters ... if you can't get to him do you say: well, let's get one of his brothers to do it? No you don't....Everyone in security detail has a vested interest in protecting the "protectee". They aren't just pulled off the street, run through a 2 week training program, and just put on detail.
