St. John's University assistant Mike Dunlap will be the next head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard on Monday.

Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said Friday the team was getting closer to making a decision on their next head coach. At the time, Higgins said two finalists in Pacers assistant Brian Shaw and Lakers assistant coach Quin Snyder had a second round of interviews that included Bobcats owner Michael Jordan. However, Higgins would not rule out the possibility of the team interviewing another candidate.

Dunlap has some NBA experience, having spent two years as an assistant coach under George Karl with the Denver Nuggets. And he served as the de facto head coach at St. John's for most of this past season, as head coach Steve Lavin recuperated from prostate cancer surgery.

Dunlap will replace Paul Silas, who was not granted a contract extension after the team finished 7-59 this past season, the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history.

The Bobcats also interviewed Orlando assistant coach Patrick Ewing, Charlotte assistant Stephen Silas, ex-Portland coach Nate McMillan, Golden State assistant Michael Malone, Cleveland assistant Nate Tibbetts and Memphis assistant Dave Joerger. Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan told the team last week he was withdrawing from consideration for the job.

Information from ESPNNewYork.com's Kieran Darcy and The Associated Press was used in this report.

That seems pretty sad for a nba team. At least Quin Snyder has head coaching experience. Bobcats any be worse than last year though

SHEEITTT... This is a blessing in disguise for B. Shaw if you ask me...
He doesn't need to fuck with Mike his first time around... :smh:

Good point. This time is going to suck which is why I never understood Jerry Sloan's interest in the job.

I guess the Michael Jordan owned Bobcats and decisions that make you say What the Fuck go hand in hand.

I will hold my comment until i hear more about why they went in this direction over Q and BShaw.

Anytime you get a chance to sign an assistant coach from the 10th best Big East team in the conference you just have to do it.

:lol::lol:

They just had to do something to excite their fan base:lol:

I'll bet those season ticket orders are flying in this morning:lol:

Jordan is still pissed off about the deal for the current CBA. Jordan is not giving a fuck anymore and is running his team to the ground. He will probably going to sell soon and the Bobcats will be in another city soon enough.

yall know damn well jordan don't wanna give NOBODY HIS CHIPS!!!

NOBODY

shit i don't blame him....he tried that shit wit larry brown and it failed.

jordan bout to run a d-league team thats in the league.

This dude used to coach at Metro State here in Denver which is a local city college. It's cool to see him ascend the ranks.

this could work out well.

The more I've heard and read about Dunlap and why he was selected, I'm willing to withhold judgement. With them having such a young team they need a coach that's also a teacher similar to Larry Brown and Greg Popovich.

Unless they have a replacement already set, this was a bad decision for a couple reasons:

The team is not attractive to any coaches but ones that like projects like Larry Brown, who has already come and gone. After jerking around Jerry Sloan last year, he might not be interested this year (if they get him then this is a great move).

Dunlap helped develop Kemba Walker into a good pg and an actual asset, something they need desperately.

With the same basic team, he won them three times as many games as last year. For a team that low on talent, getting 21 wins is an achievement.

I think Dunlap should have gotten at least one more year to see what he could do with a team he actually had a hand in building.

some straight bullshit.

Larry brown couldn't win with this untalented ass team

then silas

now this guy

when are they going to stop blaming the coach and blame mike jordan for being the worst evaluator of talent there is in the nba today.

shit is shameful as fuck.

Yep. Mike and whoever signed a long term deal for Gana Diop's sorry ass.

Sometimes I dream!!!!

That he is meeee!!!!

3rd head coach to get canned in 3 years. "Killer instinct" will prevail for the Bobcats.

that's all you need to know about the bobcats right there.

That was actually the Mavs who gave Diop that horrible contract but we traded him to Bobcats before the ink even dried

Mavs never had any problems overpaying centers(Lafrenz, Bradley, Dampier, Diop, Haywood...to name a few) until it was time to actually pay one who was worth a damn(Chandler)

And of course that's the same path the Bobcats walked since because they had so much money tied up in guys like Diop, they couldnt re-sign Chandler when he was here.
Dunlap was given a shitty hand and actually got something out of it and his reward is his walking papers. Hell, he's done a decent job of turning Biyombo from a project with real potential who gets by on heart to a basketball player.
