Board and Server update coming - details inside - ongoing

da monumental, and other cats been offering help/advice to HNIC from the beginning of this thread, but he seems intent on trying to do this upgrade on some bootleg shit.

Yeah, monumental is good with the IT/coding side of life..kinda surprised HNIC didn't take him up on that.

I've already told you what to do. The upgrade is going to fall flat on it's face as:

1) you still have single points of failure.
2) you running a PHP based forum and are most likely going to be CPU bound as your are trying to scale vertically instead of horizontally.

vertically = more powerful machine
horizontally = multiple cheaper and less powerful virtual machines that can be more powerful the more expensive single one

The guys at MojoHost can get this setup for you if you ask. I'm pretty sure someone there has read Scaling PHP.

The migration didn't go as well or as fast as expected. He only got 35% of the migration done.
So we are going to fix the problems we ran into and give it another go on Saturday.

Thanks :hohoho:

HNIC

Welp.

I know you already plunkered down six bones, but you need the command line importer from DigitalPoint for a board of this size. Trying to load and reload that much information through a mod-php process is a recipe for failure.

It's $150. I'm willing to donate. Any other takers?

maybe this man has a point.

HNIC, maybe you should run this by your technician(s) that are helping you with this switch.

if it were me, i'd wanna make sure i'd have all the right things in place for such a big message board because, as you already know, things happen when you have thousands of people trying to access a website but the site is not setup the best that it could be.
:dunno:

I think hnic is the technician, lol and I think he is sticking to what he is more familiar with... Its intimidating to learn load balancing, and a new backend and a server migration all at once... But if he keeps the db separate he could scale out later on as needed. But all that chit cost lol so you have to work on that too

Actually, FUCK NO! Isn't that what the membership fees are supposed to cover? The cost of maintaining/running the site? There are enough people that have reupped on multi-year terms to cover these costs. So why come out of pocket for something thats already been paid? Its not like the site is running in a 3 region geolocated farm with a clustered DB backend, 5 web front ends, and an app server. It's probably just one machine sitting in a rack in someones data center.

HNIC going off the grid soon [emoji38]

HNIC. You might as well start a new forum from scratch. Again.

:scared:

The importer you are showing looks to be the same one we are using. I have the link listed below.
The Author: Slavik is the guy I wanted to do the migration, but after 7 days and no response from him I
went to my backup guy. As luck would have it the next day Slavik hits me up via email and said he could
do the job and gave me a competitive price and his time frame, but I was already committed to the new guy.

Here is the link:
https://xenforo.com/community/resources/vbulletin-big-board-importer-vbulletin-3-vbulletin-4.1981/

I think my guy just underestimated the job, he made some excuses I knew were bullshit, then scheduled a
new date (Saturday) to give it another try. I think he understands the challenge now and will get it done.

We will see on Saturday. :)

My pops talked about Haig, said he was a fuckin bulldog in the White House..dudes were actually scared of him even Bush wouldn't even cross him. I automatically knew what you were saying when you put up that pic.

Using vbulletin is a non starter, we tried that already and it was a miserable failure. The main reason it took
so long to make these changes is because I wanted to get away from Vbulletin, they came under new ownership
about 4-5 years ago and it has been all down hill since then. The Xenforo team are the original Vbulletin coders.

A cloud solution would not work for BGOL, we are not what we use to be but it still takes a lot of computing
power to run this board, we are currently running on 2 servers, we have the main sever and a database server. I
am going to upgrade both servers. It will cost more, but prices have dropped over the years. Plus there is
nothing magic about the cloud, the cloud is nothing more than a server, but it probably is a shared server which is a definite no go.

Lastly my server host is an Adult hosting company, they will not shut me down until they give me every chance
in the world to remove any objectionable content or copyright violations. This is huge.

HNIC

Come on man 2 servers? What are the spec's of these servers. With two servers and depending on how much ram you have just run free ESXi and load balancer both the frontend and backends. Your solution should look like this.

1 Server for HAProxy load balancing of the frontend apache server & DB servers (4vCPUs 2-4gb ram)
3 web servers (4 vcpus x 4-8gb ram)
3 clustered MYSQL Percona servers (4 vCPU's x 8gb of ram)

Spread them across both of the servers and you have a fully redundant site and the only point of failure is HAProxy but it is the most rocksolid free load balancer you can get all major websites(fb/twitter) use it.

I've offered my help as well as far as technical design i could even setup the barebones server for you and you can migrate all data without me touching it. but you know you don't have to listen to the guy that runs 2 datacenters 20 virtual servers and 200 vm's for a living.

Oh all these are free too vmware is free all the linux servers are free. The only thing you would need to shell out for a program to back-up the esxi servers.

I wish brother.

I'm out in the middle of the ocean with a shitty connection and the only sport on is soccer.:angry:

That's why I'm willing to fork over $ to help. BGOL sometimes is my only way to get the info on things that concern me. Social, sports, pussy, etc.
