BlackBerry is done making smartphones

In BlackBerry's latest quarterly financials released today, the company revealed it's getting out of the hardware business once and for all, choosing instead to "outsource that function to partners." It's not a huge shock given BlackBerry CEO John Chen has foreshadowed the cut and run several times. Earlier this year, he warned that if hardware wasn't making a profit by September it would be time to call it quits, and he's kept his word after the Mobility Solutions division posted an $8 million loss for this past quarter. This doesn't mean we've seen the last of BlackBerry handsets, though; they just won't be produced in-house anymore.

This was the case for BlackBerry's last launch anyway, as the all-touch DTEK50 was more or less a repurposed Alcatel device manufactured by TCL. Furthermore, the company announced in today's financials that it's already licensed its name to an Indonesian firm that'll build and sell BlackBerry-branded devices in the region.

While BlackBerry still makes the best keyboards in the business, some of its last highly security-conscious enterprise customers are starting to move on -- not to mention that the security of consumer devices has been called into question. In the past few months, BlackBerry has lost several high-profile patrons, including the US Senate and President Obama.

BlackBerry's core business remains software, but gone are the days when secure, enterprise email solutions were all the company had to talk about. Much of its famed productivity software is now available on Android, BBM is still very much a thing, and the QNX platform is being expanded to power self-driving cars. BlackBerry has also started shipping Radar, a hardware and software combo that offers shipping companies and the like real-time tracking. And while BB10 OS may be all but retired, a renewed focus on software appears to be paying off.

"We are reaching an inflection point with our strategy. Our financial foundation is strong, and our pivot to software is taking hold," said Chen. "In Q2, we more than doubled our software revenue year over year and delivered the highest gross margin in the company's history." Cut through the corporate speak and the general takeaway is: BlackBerry is doing alright, hardware is expendable.

 I think they still had business customers even after losing the commercial market to Apple and Google. I guess they've now lost the business customers as well.
Once they lost their govt contracts years back, massive IT depts started to follow suit in droves.

that was sarcasm. i thought they were done making phones years ago.

They had one with a 720p screen drop a few months ago.

I have a blackberry passport. I think I'm going to try to pick up a priv or the new dtek before they are no longer available. The passport is bb os 10 tho, and the others are android.

I'm still waiting for the Palm Pre to come back.

I had a Treo then a pre, then the hp veer, followed by the Pre 3, which was never released, but sold on ebay. When they stopped supporting it, I went to black berry because it was similarly elegant, and had true multitasking. I hate android where you have to close something to get to something else. I have a touchpad around here somewhere. I miss webOS. :(

I love it the only thing if you are a selfie junkie the front facing camera is only 2mp

But the rear camera is 18 mp.

If you a selfie junkie I would go with the dtek

I love the priv it I had no idea how outdated the blackberry z10 was...

The priv

has both a physical and touch key board

The physical keyboard CA. Be used as a touch pad.

The Android os makes a big difference

Yeah, I don't really do selfies. You like the android version better than bb10? Don't you still have to close everything where you can only have one item open at a time? I also heard the hub wasn't as good in the android version. The priv keyboard doesn't look comfortable either.

Keyboard is dope.

The hub works great as far as having one item open at a time nah you can switch between apps by just hitting the square or whatever you call it. To close out you hit the circle.

I'm still getting used to it tho.

Didn't Blackberry give Alicia Keys a paid gig? Creative ambassador or something like that?

Yea that was stupid

Why Drake ain't get it with both the company and him being Canadian

Just shows how much that companyy lacked vision they needed more creative people making decisions...

The guy that made WebOS is over user experience with Google. Stock Android has a similar feeling to WebOS.

Seriously? I'll have to find a video or something on youtube. Right now I'm sticking with my BlackBerry, but eventually I'll need an alternative.

Here is the guy.

Thanks this is interesting, but what is the multi tasking like? For instance I can minimize my browser and have a video still playing, check the weather, read email etc all the while. I attached a pic with 8 apps open. Those are open in real time, not recent. I just have to swipe to get to everything or click on it to make it full screen. I don't have to click on a button. If I want to close the app I click on the x similar to what I'd do on a Windows desktop.

Everything is a card and keep in mind that this is old.

Here is how it will be going forward but my device won't support this update.

Ok. This has my interest now. At least I don't feel like there aren't ANY other options. That picture in picture looks promising. I don't necessarily want to have the video playing on the main screen tho when I have another app I want in the forefront. It's not webOS or BB10, but it looks promising. I've really become dependent on the BlackBerry hub also. Thankfully they are releasing that for other devices. Thanks, I really appreciate the info. My brother has an android tablet here. I'll have to see what kind of updates can be done for it.

Take a look at the Pixel (formally Nexus) once it comes out, it should be announced next month.

Or you could purchase last years Nexus device.

Not true. Jon Rubinstein created webOS. He used to work at Apple. I still remember how the remember Palm Pre could sync with iTunes, and Apple kept releasing updates to break that syncing.

You're right, I should have been more specific.

Matias was over user experience.

Blackberry was a very good business phone doing it’s time I had one during my early Nextel days and I loved it

Best fucking hardware ever....the learning curve to really appreciate it was too steep

In a dumbed down society ...

And most of all they waited waaay to long..

To make their phones internet friendly...

Their whole focus was security...which is probably why the phone had to go..

They don't need the masses making

Data mining and data theft a difficult process...

I still refuse to get an apple anything
