A member of Charlottesville’s City Council resigned Wednesday from the Virginia Board of Education amid controversy over his history of racist and sexist Twitter posts.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office announced Wes Bellamy’s resignation in a short statement Wednesday afternoon.

“Today, I informed Governor McAuliffe that I have decided to resign from my appointment to the Virginia State Board of Education,” Bellamy said. “I would like to redirect my attention and focus to my family, the children and young people whom I serve, and to the City of Charlottesville. I want to thank Governor McAuliffe, Steve Staples, Billy Cannaday, and the rest of the State Board and staff for their support and faith in me.”

Bellamy, a 30-year-old teacher who also serves as Charlottesville’s ceremonial vice mayor, came under fire this week over vulgar tweets he posted years before he held public office.

In a public apology for the messages, Bellamy said they reflected youthful views and said he had matured to become a different, better person.

Bellamy was elected to the Charlottesville City Council last year. He earned the highest number of votes for the city’s at-large council seats.

In March, McAuliffe appointed Bellamy, seen as a promising young African-American leader in Democratic circles, to a four-year term on the state Board of Education.

McAuliffe said Tuesday that he was “horrified” by Bellamy’s tweets, which included anti-white and anti-women sentiments as well as homophobic slurs.

Republicans in the General Assembly hinted this week that they would block Bellamy’s appointment if he remained on the board. His appointment still was subject to assembly approval.

Some legislators made public calls for his ouster from the board.

“The type of language used by Mr. Bellamy is unacceptable, and certainly disqualifies him from serving on the Board of Education,” Del. R. Steven Landes, R-Augusta, who chairs the House Education Committee, said in a statement Wednesday.

Several of Bellamy’s colleagues on the Charlottesville council have rallied to his defense and said he is a positive force for the city. Bellamy is on leave from his job at Albemarle High School while the Albemarle County School Board investigates the matter.

  • "I DONT LIK[sic] WHIT[sic] PEOPLE SO I HATE WHITE SNOW!" in 2009
  • "I’m all for equal opportunity..but a Female Principal with a school full of female teachers is fkn[sic] a sure fire way to fk[sic] up our lil boys" in 2011
  • "I really #hate how almost 80% of the black people here talk white" in 2010

The tweets show Bellamy claiming that he hates black people who “act white” or “talk white,” and considers white women to be the “devil.”

Most of the tweets appear to have been written between 2009 to 2014.

According to his Twitter account, Bellamy, who often tweets a few dozen times a day, created his account in April 2009. Since then, he has sent approximately 123,000 of the 140-character-max posts on the social media platform.

Other tweets published on the blog post written by author Jason Kessler show Bellamy, 30, saying that women often lie about the amount of men they have sex with and that he hates “seeing White people in Orangeburg,” the South Carolina community where he attended college.

Damn he didn't know people are watching.

He was 25. Understandable to a degree. He didn't realize his future. Still, should have had a separate twitter. It looks bad since he's a teacher.

He pissed dude off, because homeboy had a lot of tweets. He took a long ass time to digging the tweets up. 13,000 tweets. :smh: I guess nothing is worse than a white man scorned.

Those tweets read like he was a past bgol member

Yep, He made comments about them having no ass too

I just want to know if he used the term CAC

Hope y'all didn't think that all them white folks losing their jobs over social media was the end of it .....

Free Speech ain't free

I've been saying that. It seems like they are setting up a big ass trap. They are mostly firing white people now, but then when race isn't allowed to be talked about in any way, cacs will dig up old tweets and fire black people. What's acceptable in 2016 might not be acceptable in 2021.

And it's not like these cacs aren't pushing for black people to get fired for tweets, it just really hasn't started yet. But give it time.

Wes quickly made a lot of enemies in Charlottesville, but he doesn't do himself any favors when he needs to try and remember everything he said with 123,000+ public tweets. To make matters even worse, this summer someone posted his (extensive) arrest records from SC and VA. The stalker (named 'NotWesBellamy') didn't want to pay to look his records up from GA where Wes is originally from. I didn't read the fine print, but if any of these are felony convictions and were never disclosed that this can really fuck up his future :smh:

Yup and most of the white folks getting fired are some minimum wage types..

Black teenager get bagged with some weed and gets a felony and can't get a job for life.

Petreaus gets a felony and a cabinet position

He was also vice mayor, active on the city council, and wanted to remove a Confederate statue from a public park. That made him a target for a lot of right-wingers and conservatives.

Why the hell would he think that cacs wouldn't come for his head once he became visible?Rule #1 is to always dead your Twitter if you are aiming for public spotlight.

If he absolutely just HAD to tweet, why didn't he kill the old account and get a new one? Btw, I agree with him on the female principal/teachers rant.

So once he has a Facebook, Twitter, etc accounts how can he COMPLETELY erase lets say 5 years of posts?

Making a NEW one will still allow old friends and enemies to dig up stuff

And shouldn't some smart Black people create this as a service?

A type of Cleaner service that goes as far in the net as possible and literally cleans up your online image?

Not even.

but coco think for minute...

honestly his tweets to ME were nothing and I mean NOTHING compared to stuff I see everyday on the net.

Imagine if YOU got a very prestigious public well compensated position...

and someone found your bgol account?

how many things have YOU written her that OUTSIDE bgol could be taken COMPLETELY out of context?

If what this young man tweeted is considered OFFENSIVE

and

stuff Trump has said is considered INNOCENT and ACCEPTABLE?

What the hell is my Cacs Cacing: Ryan Lochte Signs Endorsement Deal With Pine Bros. Cough Drops gonna be interpreted as?

Cause no one gonna remeber my BGOL Black Father's Playlist: Be A Father To Your Child thread?

I foresee a lot of this type of thing going on in decades to come.

These new generations don't get it.

First thing hr depts do these days is look up social media accounts.

The problem is that people that grew up with the internet have no concept of separating or editing their online life. You'd have to be really good to associate me with some of my social media. Working in advertising and being at the NYC Facebook and Google headquarters showed me all I needed to see to keep shit separate.

My facebook account is just a bunch of pics of my kids, sports talk and I don't friend anyone I don't know.

Smh. Why the fuck a grown ass man need all these damn attention whoring accounts in the 1st place. It just seems female-ish to me.

Man FB and Twitter need a big ass Miranda Rights type warning every time folks login.

Dude is about to lose not only his political career but his educational career and ambitions over some shit he tweeted years ago....under HIS own name :smh:.

What's the saying; "never write when you can speak, never speaking when you can nod, never nod when you can wink?"
