If you wanna practice and get better, don't just rack up balls and start shooting. Set up shots you normally see in a game (ball stuck on a rail, cut shots, etc) and practice that.
But first things first, make sure your shot is straight. Take the cue ball aim at the rail across from you and try to hit the rail and have the cue ball come straight back to your cue. If you can do that then your shot is straight and you can move on to make shots. You should be able to do this consistantly.
Pick up a book if you can. All the information you'll ever need can be found in a couple books. After you have the info, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

yes i do play. I play whatever the other dude who wants to lose his money wants to play lol..kidding aside i mainly play straight pool.
Starting out, I wouldn't get caught up in the hype about cue brands. If you're not a pro, then it wont affect your game. I run tables just as easily with my $20 cue that I bought from a sporting good store as I do with my Cuetec. Choosing a cue is a matter of preference and dealing with maintenance. Just make sure the shaft doesnt warp and the tip doesnt skew. Keep it well rounded (like the edge of a nickel or dime).

I like 9-ball or 1 pocket. I will also play 8 ball. I have played 14 & 1 with some true old school kats (dudes like 60/65 or above love that game).
Yeah you right a player could take a broom stick and beat the shit out of guy with $1000 or $2000 sticks.
I've actually never played 1 pocket. That and snooker are the two games i wanna play. 9ball is obviously the big attraction now a days but you go to any pool hall in the city and play the big names chances are you're gonna play straight pool. I played jeanette lee in straight once at a hall in queens (she'll play anyone if you have the game) and she whooped my ass haha. It actually wasnt that bad but MAN was i nervous. She was cool as hell about it tho..
She was nice with stick. I like Gerta Hoecstedler and Karen Croel.
Some of the Asian chicks on tour are very good also.
I played at a nice pool hall a couple times over in the Flat Iron District of I beleive it was Manhattan.
Thanks for info ..You guys are right this shit takes a lot of practice. My girl is complaining her azz off....
