BGOL PARENTS: Was Claire Too Hard on Vanessa for LYING about the concert?

BGOL PARENTS: This is the anniversary of the Cosby show and I got a few questions about one of the MOST iconic episodes in their entire run...

Vanessa & Friends go to the Wretched concert.

Looking back was Claire to hard on Vanessa?

Considering that they had daughters drop out of school, get married behind their back, Theo brought a girl to tears making fun of her weight, stole a car, got in a car accident and out and out LIED to their face on numerous occasions...

Was it unfair for Vanessa (who besides Sandra seemed to be held to a higher standard both socially and academically early on) to be essentially YELLED at for 5 minutes?

NONE of the other children ever received that treatment.

And why didn't Cosby have MORE interactions like this on show?

And how would YOUR parents have reacted?

Could a scene like THIS be shown with a Black family on TODAY'S TV?

How would YOU have reacted if one of YOUR kids did this?

You do realize this was the only show on at that time that had an abusive situation like this, black or white if I recall accurately. And Roger got beat on What's Happening by his moms, so the only two black shows had child abuse/and or murder

The Jeffersons was comedy and every other equivalent white show like Archie Bunker had no such issues.

Not funny at all that it was accepted as commonplace, just my observation.

Real Parents know there is NO Blue print for raising a child or children.

You do you very best and hope when your not able to do your VERY best
your child gains knowledge by your example, that being: WE are not perfect
no one is.

 You can quote me...

Old heads used to say "...as long as you make it to 18 with all your
fingers, toes and both your eyes your parents did their job."

I came in here thinking about the episode where Claire told her she couldn't go to that party(then Claire went out of town) and she tricked Cliff into giving her permission to go. Then Claire called just before Vanessa left for the party and Cliff put her on the phone. I was shocked when Claire said "listen you little winch."

:lol: I remember that! Claire and vanessa boy. whew that was hell.

IRCC there was an emergency or fire at the block vanessa lied and said was at..so they were worried that she might have been hurt or killed at that time only to find out she wasn't even there to begin with. So now theyre DOUBLY pissed..

Also I don't think they held to a higher standard..remmeber the episode where Denise wanted to use her money to buy a hooptie that Cliff nixed and denise got an attitude about it..Clair jumped in her shit then not so subtly threatened to kick her out if she ever copped an attitude like that again.

maybe not to that anger degree but they all saw the wrath at some point..

And why didn't Cosby have MORE interactions like this on show?
they had those interactions..Cliff yelled at Theo and threatened him in the first episode

both showed MAJOR anger and disappointment when Sandra and Elvin said they'd drop out of law/medical school and open a wilderness store.

And how would YOUR parents have reacted?
asswhippings for everyone involved even kids there were not their children:lol:

As disbelieving as this is for most cats on here you would most likely see a scene like that on a Tyler Perry sitcom..in fact House of Payne had a number of heavy scenes like that.

damn....still messes me up till this day.

don;t understand how all these Black people co-signing Adrian Peterson.

This episode right here made a lot of parents reflect on their own upbringing and how they are raising their own children.

VERY INTERESTING OBSERVATION...

any time and I mean ANY TIME physical punishment was mentioned on a WHITE SHOW?

It was roundly frowned upon.

wow....gotta cue up my dvds when i get home & watch these episodes again. one of the greatest tv show ever.

and as far as that Wretched concert? I can only hope I'd have the restraint they had dealing with her....although Claire was all in for the bullrush to dat ass if not for Cliff

if she aint die in a fire she would've ended up pretty close to death fuckin wit me :dunno:

This debate came up again...

I still think they went EXTRA hard on Vanessa...

they weren't THIS mad when Theo stole a damn car!

Claire was a straight up G. I don't think she was too hard at all though. Girls who tend to lie eventually tend to end up being fast. Vanessa was going to be old enough one day to live like she wanted to. It just sucks to be punished during your middle teen years.

With a fine ass wife like Claire Huxtable she was not to harsh. I would done the same like Cliff let her handle it and back her up.

I remember Claire saying did you enjoy the wretched...and the BIG FUN?!?!
Side note, I went to high school with her friend Janet Meiser (characters name)
