Regrettably, i don't follow much Afro beat past Fela. I enjoy Seun Kuti over Femi because he doesn't stray much from his father's style. I can't touch on Africa 90 either
But only reaching out on Fela for Afrobeat only is similar to folks reaching out for Bob Marley on reggae is discussed.

I'm a big fan of Fela Kuti's music. 
I got back into listening to his music recently because K'naan and J Period did some blends of K'naan's raps from his Troubadour album over Fela Kuti music.

Any deep house heads from The Warehouse and Muzik Box in The Chi or The Garage in NYC definitely know about Fela and some afrobeat. I saw dude on tv in concert and his performances were amazing. There are some cultured and open minded hip hop artists that introduced a lot of American cats to Fela and possibly opened the door to some funky afrobeat.

Better off asking whether his wives were treated well as I doubt they were forced into matrimony. Do you shun his values thinking Western philosophy is in the right?
