The late great Fela Anikulapo Kuti, (15 October 1938 - 2 August 1997), real name Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat music settled in Los Angeles during the late 1960s, where he was introduced to the work of Malcolm X (El hajj Malik El Shabazz), Elderidge Cleaver and the ideology of the Black Panther Party, by friend and partner, Sandra Isidore.

One of the most sampled musicians in hip-hop history, James Brown was introduced to Fela in 1973. Reminiscing on that trip to Nigeria in 1973, Brown band member bassist Bootsy Collins states, "the James Brown band was number one to me. But once I got there and saw Fela and them, then I had second thoughts about it. I mean, seriously."

Fela Kuti - Army Arrangement

Fela kuti's music is respected and appreciated by artists like Common, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, D-Angelo and many others. In fact, "Time Travelin'," the opening track to Common's brilliant record "Like Water for Chocolate", is dedicated to the memory of late Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Also Common's track "Pops Rap III...All My Children" featured on the album "Like Water for Chocolate" samples Fela Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy".

The aim of this thread is to find out how many BGOL members would not mind getting introduced to Fela's music. I have a catalog of his albums in my possession and i would like to Up them for the fam, but i need to know how many people are interested in Fela's music. That means i am willing to make a thread (Fela Kuti's discography) in the Music and entertainment forum based on the number of replies i get on this tread from people that are willing to pick up some Fela. This is important because i don't want to waste my time Upin' music that cats ain't feeling. That would be a waste of your time and my time.

You need to hear the song "Expensive Shit". My father played it for me when I was 10(1986)and I've listen to his music and liked it ever since!

Sir, you were not saying this ish the other day, talking about, "i will get of my account myself". And yeah, how can you not care about white folks when you are white.....dude fall back and let the people that dig Fela's music or have some constructive information to contribute reply to this thread. oNe!!!

I enjoy his song "Lady" and "Shakara" but the purists remember Prince Nico Mbarga. His Nigerian rhythms arent fused with jazz like Fela's but his influence was felt as far as Columbia! Any West African who dares to call himself/herself African knows the anthem "Sweet Mother".

Well, it still came out during Fela's reign. So peep the related videos in those categories. I can't remember the names but there's some bangers. My favorite is Simplicity. Nigerian Education? is okay. "Aki" is hard but really for the serious African listeners.

Someone posted that Wale remix of the Bunny Mack song, "My Sugar" or something like that. Can't remember which country that's from. Lite disco music in there lol.
