Great post. I'm trying to bring it back with this show here

A 2-hour radio mix show made up of mostly old school funk. I can't front Kes, a large part of my collection came from the music you posted on BGOL

With hip hop being around for more than 40yrs.. We should be in the 2nd generation of funk bands by now.. Hip hop was good but almost a half a decade of the same genre of music!! Something ain't right or these sic mofo done figured away to control generations of people with a certain sound of music!! Just sayin

Rap music is cheaper to produce and requires a lot less people. you never have to worry about it tour date getting canceled because the drummer got sick or the bass player walked out at that concert in Des Moines Iowa.

me too. as a kid i never got their music but that album cover always fascinated me.
My pops had all of their albums, so I liked their music, but when that album came out, I was in the third grade, and seeing a primate with those vivid colors on its face blew my mind.

I understand what your saying!! But 40+yrs of hip hop?? The corporate heads are milkin that hip hop, so they can make money producing the music and then make money on the private prison side also!! I know, Im the only 1 who see this bullshit playin out!! Oh well, the trance/dream/illusion carries on!!

You're not the only one.

A few years ago I was in downtown SF when a fundraiser asked me about Time Warner sharing the private prison industry. Their claim was that Time Warner's music was deliberately encouraging people to commit crimes so that they would have more victims for the prison system. They even told me about it upcoming protest outside of KMEL to demand that they stop playing a Rich Homie Quan song that in their opinion encouraged rape culture.

I don't buy it.

Yes, Warner Brothers has a stake in the prison industry, but then they have a stake in a lot of industries.

If Warner Brothers was trying to fill the prisons it's far easier and less problematic to just lobby the government to criminalize a common activity. Warner Bros doesn't want to revisit the kind of lawsuits they were facing in the '90s.

Finally, this idea that rap lyrics can influence a person to commit a criminal act that the otherwise wouldn't have performed has been proven false. Even hypnosis can't produce that result.

Also, promoters would rather pay for 2 or 3 people than 9 or 10.

Same with the band leaders. Freddie Jackson commands $35,000 a show because he has to pay the salary and accomodations of at least a half dozen band mates.

Luckily his audience is older and more well heeled than most so they're more than willing to foot the high ticket price. If he was a youngster coming up today though he'd probably be relegated to a Nate Dogg type role.
