While they wouldn't be in the conversation of any best of all-time discussions, I wanted to pay tribute to some of the trailblazers who are always forgotten -- Marlin Briscoe, James "Shack" Harris, and "Jefferson Street" Joe Gilliam.

Marlin-Briscoe.jpg

Marlin Briscoe was the first Black player to be drafted as a quarterback. While he started his career as a quarterback with Denver, he played the bulk of his career as a receiver with the Bills and Dolphins.

James-Harris.jpg

James Harris was the NFL's first Black full-time quarterback, and was the first Black quarterback to win a playoff game and be elected to a Pro Bowl. While he played for several teams, his most successful years were with the Los Angeles Rams. He was about eight years ahead of Doug Williams at Grambling, and he had the same explosive arm that Doug had, but he was not as mobile. Shack was also one of the NFL's first Black senior executives, holding senior player personnel directorships with the Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Detroit Lions.

Side Note: In the early 70s, Sam Spence, the musical composer of NFL Films, wrote the tune "Ramblin' Man from Gramblin'" in his honor:

Joe-Gilliam-b.jpg

This may have been the most talented guy on this entire list, or any other list. Cocaine cost the career, and eventually the life of Joe Gilliam, Had he been able to play an entire career without an addiction, he surely would have been a candidate for a bust in Canton.

Vince-Evans.jpg

Also, let's not forget Vince Evans. After leaving USC, Vince started for the Bears, but his best years came with the Oakland Raiders. While he never reached Pro Bowl status, he was as good or better than about half the guys on this list.

From a physical standpoint and just pure QBing. Randall Cunningham was that dude.
He could do just about anything on a football field. Could have even been the punter.

PS: Vince Evans was no slouch. Plus one of my favs, Jeff Blake.
