Subs, I wnat to rap too.
Well when I thought beat-making was my path, I went and got an MPC 2000, a Roland Midi Key Controller, a Yamaha Grand Piano Keyboard(no midi), a Numark Turntable, a mixer that I bought off of my homboy(I forget the brand) and I used my speakers from my stereo I had since high school.
That's roughly a $1300 setup right there.
Oh yea, I downloaded Fruity Loops and Cool Edit onto my laptop.

What type of beats do you want to make??
Do you already know how to play any instruments??
Will you just be making beats or doing the actual producing/engineering as well?? In which case that's damn near a completely different conversation.

Making decent quality music can be done on almost any pc. There are people that can create great music using Garageband (entry level software).The quality is in the person behind keyboard, pc etc.

What he said. You don't have to pay tens and thousands of $'s. It just depends on you. If you have a good ear for music and you continue to harness your skills then no matter what software/hardware that you use you'll be able to create some fire shit. The mind is the most powerful tool that you have and it don't cost you a dime. All you have to is read, research, and educate yourself. Research the theory of music, audio engineering, and take a few classes. If you can't take the classes at the moment then there are plenty of ebooks of those same classes available. I've been producing for 14 years now. I started out at a young age and believe it or not once the very 1st mtv generator came out on the playstation 1, I copped that and stayed on it all day & night making beat after beat and mastered it. People wasn't believing that I was making the types of beats that I was making on a ps1 game until I showed them...then soon it was on to fruityloops 2 and I had the same type of effect only just way better. Ultimately you just have to practice, practice, and practice. Utilize your mind and the potential is limitless. It's all about rhythm. If you have a beat playing in your head it's about drawing it out. Remember this...you don't need a million dollar machine/software to make a million dollar beat. Trust me, if you master fruityloops a person will never figure out what you make your beats on, not that it really matters though. If you need those ebooks lemme know and I got ya. I did it for years so I was MPC/SP1200 keyboard 2" tape Adat-Pro tools etc.
I still have that shit but I picked up maschine to use with my MBP. Still learning, but it's fun to fuck with and sounds pretty decent. you can get one on Amazon for under 400 bucks.

My Son is learning the Keyboard so I guess I will learn some beats
I always wanted to do beats since Junior HS when we were bangin on the table doing the planet rock beat.
Shit sounded dope, 5 kids each responsible for a particular part of the beat.....
