I think that we hold ourselves to some kind of ridiculous standard. So changing NOTHING but the actors..would you consider The Hangover a good funny film or coonery..remember the role the guys played..

The Cool Guy...

The Henpecked guy...
20iat5e.jpg

The Semi Retarded guy...

And remember some of the funniest scenes..

four black men getting tazed by the cops
fucking around with a tiger (all that screaming and jumping around)
Mike Tyson

be honest if you saw three black guys doing all that shit would the movie still be as funny to you

hell the posters ALONE would have the NAACP shouting..

Exact same story with just black dudes. No it wouldn't have been coonery.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

With the right casting, I think it'd be cool.

I'd switch Katt for Chris Rock.

Then they'd have to re-cast the other characters too like the cop who had them tased, that could be like Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite) and I think it would be hilarious if instead of Mike Tyson, it would be somebody unexpected like Prince or O.J. Simpson, I would be rolling on the floor.

I like this angle. Looking forward to some honest responses.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Ok let me say it, white people make movies that could be considered coonery, but being that they have like a billion other movies to offset them, its not a big issue. Now if we were to make only movies like the Hangover, yeah I can see how people could view it as a problem.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

This question might need a thread of it's own but - what black movies do you all think of as coonery?

The only one I could think of at the moment is Soul Plane.

I don't think the plot would work the same way with four black men. But even if the plot and jokes were the same I wouldn't call it coonery, it just wouldn't be funny.

....Watermelon Heist was arguably the worst movie in history of mankind. I burned copies and gave them to some folk I didnt like so I could kill an hour and a half of their lives.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Absolutely not coon or buffoonery. However, I would switch Katt Williams with Dave Chapelle or Kevin hart. Katt is straight trash in my opinion. Actually I think the movie would have been funnier.

:smh: Buffoonery is Tyler Perry with 10 Madea movies recycling the same corny jokes over and over.

thats the crux of the issue here...

it seems the official response to something that black and not funny is to call it coonery.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Ultimately I think it comes down to the script. As long as it wasn't orientated towards stereotypes yeah I believe it would be even funnier

in the hangover one guy has a girlfriend who screams and bosses him around and cheated on him..sounds like the stereotypical loud angry black woman black people always complain about seeing in films..

One guy is a retard who acts weird and may have sold drugs to kids...are you telling me black people wouldn't have objections or issues with that character??

Then theres mike tyson all by himself..

Now if you change ONLY the four friends and keep everyone else the same then you the issue of a black guy choosing a white prostitute over a loud black woman OR if you make the stripper black then you have a black man choosing between a black whore and a black harpy...

oh yeah..half the black community wouldn't read into that:rolleyes:

think about it..

I wasn't impressed with the original. :smh:

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

YES 99% OF THIS BOARD WOULD CONSIDER IT COONERY. I wouldn't cuz I don't get into that calling everything coonery bullshit. Nobody will admit it now, because they see how foolish they are, and how critical they are of their own race.

exactly.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

I would think of it as a funny movie but I'm sure someone would misuse the word "coonery".

Again, all comedy is buffoonery. If it's not, it's not comedy.

There is nothing wrong with Black folks criticizing the work of other Black people. "Crabs in a barrell" is another overused but least understood term thrown around on here.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

I feel like Geechiedan set this up dishonestly with the actors he chose. :hmm: Tucker, maybe Williams, and definitely Morgan have all been known for playing coon-like characters in the past. They are all extreme personalities, known for going 'loud' so the comparison to the original Hangover doesn't work and top loads the conversation to sway in Geechiedan's favor.

If you recast with, say, Laz Alonso in the Bradley Cooper role, Romany Falco (Weeds, No Ordinary Family) in the Ed Helms role, and Craig Robinson in the Zach Galifinakis role, and play it just like the original, then, no, it wouldn't be a coon/bufoonery show.

If that were true, why doesn't 99% of this board shit on the Wayans Brothers catalog???

Cuz quite honestly, they've made a gand of black Hangover-esque movies. Some good, some great, some bad....but only a select few on BGOL call them coons.

Was Chris Rock's Character "Cooning" in The Grown Ups?

The reason I named those individuals is because they have a higher name recognition than Laz Alonzo, Romany Malco and Craig Robinson (who btw has never played a retard in comedy) If a black Hangover movie looking for MAJOR THEATER RELEASE were in the works those names would be at or near the top of list for the producers because its about putting the "butts in the seats".

But the allegation of coonery and buffoonery isn't about who the person is but what the person does. Again one character is henpeck by a loud shrewish woman..

The other is clearly semi retarded prone to acting out in a childish manner.

two of the three main characters fit the profile of what would be described as coonery no matter who is in the role.
