Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Great Question

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

The talent isn't there. Who's the black Ed Helms (who's a true genius)??

considering what he did the movie, be henpecked, act scared and confused and sing a song it wasn't that deep a role:rolleyes:

get a grip...

who would YOU cast as the black ed helms in the "black" version:hmm:

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

1. Are you talking about the same script, same jokes etc.... just with brothers?
2. What do you consider "coonery" .... I think yall got a different definition than me

^This^ is why it wouldn't work. Blacks (like you) don't even GET what makes a great performance and a successful film.

There is no black comedic actor with his type of subtle, sophisticated acting chops.

Cooper plays it straight as a BLAND leading man, and Zach plays the clown with the easy, outrageous humor (who exhibits no recognizable human behavior). He makes the whole crazy FARCE work in a way it wouldn't if you just had a goofy comic in the role.

Not exactly the same level, but the closest comparison to this hypothetical in recent memory:

While the Black movie was largely panned, I don't recall overwhelming accusations of coonery. :dunno:

really?? then explain why the media was sucking Zach Galifinakis's left nut the whole time the film was in the theaters?

why has Zach Galifinakis hosted SNL and been on the cover of so many magazines since this film has come out?

Why did ed helms if he's so brilliant how come cedar rapids hasn't done as well as the hangover in BO?

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

WTF is coonery

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

The writing (story), and dialogue for Hangover was very good. Give a black cast that type of writing and they would be better.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

I've been accused of "Cooning" (by a black person) with my comic book (The Dog Years). When people see black faces they react completely different than white faces. White people get a pass.

One of the biggest things people are afraid of, (largely due to programing) is "black sexuality". Especially when it comes to black men. Black men are always depicted as damn near asexual in many a film or tv show. And we as black men are afraid of being viewed as "doggish"....

so if this were a black cast film you wouldn't think this scene was in anyway stereotypical??? HONESTLY??

honestly??

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

theres lots of "coonish" white movies. The hangover, not so much.

What I would call cooning in Black movies, I tend to call Hacky for white movies.

Bad comedy is bad comedy. The hangover had some funny shit in it.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Who said stereotypes are not sometimes funny. Ever went to a comedy show? or saw a standup on tv..

Yea everybody on the board would call that cooning. Apparently black people don't argue in real life. They don't cheat either. :smh:

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

1. yes

2. whats your definition?

1. If it is the same script and jokes it can't be "coonery" imo ... it's comedy
2. Not my thread and I didn't ask the question but .... I would say for us it is when you are the butt of jokes and degraded by racial humor for a primarily "white" audience ...

what exactly is so stereotypical about it?

name some examples of movies BGOL has deemed "coonery"

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Well to b truthful, i see where your coming from. If that kind of cast in that type of movie it would b consider buffonery!

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

The reason I named those individuals is because they have a higher name recognition than Laz Alonzo, Romany Malco and Craig Robinson (who btw has never played a retard in comedy) If a black Hangover movie looking for MAJOR THEATER RELEASE were in the works those names would be at or near the top of list for the producers because its about putting the "butts in the seats".

Not true. None of these brothers are guaranteed box office draw. Tucker hasn't been in a movie since Rush Hour 3. Williams has gone off the grid since his public meltdown. I'll be generous and give you a pass on Morgan due to the popularity of 30 Rock, but he's no A-lister...and neither was anyone in the white version. Your argument is inherently fallacious because audiences didn't come out to The Hangover due to casting, so even in a Black version, the gamble would be basically the same.

But the allegation of coonery and buffoonery isn't about who the person is but what the person does. Again one character is henpeck by a loud shrewish woman..

The other is clearly semi retarded prone to acting out in a childish manner.

two of the three main characters fit the profile of what would be described as coonery no matter who is in the role.

Again, incorrect. Coonery or bufoonery is determined by the manner in which the character reacts to his environment. If the dentist's wife is played as a loud ghetto woman, who is also Black, then, yes, she becomes a coon. If she's played exactly as the white actress played her, then no. She's just an emasculating shrew, similar to Shelby in The Best Man, a film blessedly free of coons and stereotypes. If the dentist responds to her in a loud, exaggerated, unrealistic manner, like when Martin Lawrence would throw his little physical tantrums in every episode of his show, then it strays into coonery/bufoonery.
The question becomes, why are Black actors always expected to go 'loud' in film/tv? Why aren't they allowed to react more realistically while maintaining the humor of the moment? Tyler Perry(cause we all know that's what this is really about), and filmmakers like him, lower the expectations of Black audiences, so all of our shit is supposed to play to the lowest common denominator. And that's bullshit.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

Was Chris Rock's Character "Cooning" in The Grown Ups?

That movie sucked ass. Y'all are funny comedians, but who said you could carry a 2 hr movie by improvising :smh:

I saw the origial and it was hilarious couldn't wait for the reamake. I was extremely disappointed.

No, Blunt's right. The dentist was the film's human center. He was the one who was most affected by the trip to Vegas. Galifinakis stole the movie, but that tends to happen with outrageous characters.

your point? you are talking about who the story was centered around and i am talking about the character that stole the show.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

The more I think about it, the more your initial choices don't make sense. You couldn't make a cohesive film with 3 outrageous leads like Tucker, Williams, and Morgan. They are all accustomed to being the comic center of every film they're in. None of them, except MAYBE Katt Williams, can play it straight and that's not what his fans would want to see.

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

whats REALLY funny..

I still havent seen this movie

Re: Be Honest - If the Hangover starred 4 black guys would you think it as coon/buffo

very interesting thread homie, I am kind of on the fence, because you think about Rush hour and chris tucker, I dont consider that cooning and he does alot of crazy stuff, but I consider tracy morgan (even though i like his stuff) too coon on his show sometimes. At the end of the day I think it would be just really funny and still over the top, I know alot of black folks who said they didnt like Hangover and that it was corny so who know
