Part of that is just baseball and knowing what pitches are coming at what count in what situation.
First pitch of most EVERY game is a fastball or something over the plate, unless you have a reputation as someone who reaches at bad pitches. Good leadoff hitters will sit on that pitch and if it doesn't come they'll just take the pitch, be it ball or strike.
With Altuve you know he's gonna wait for his pitch so you either try to blast a heater past him and hope he hits it hard at someone or swings and misses. You don't want to fall behind to him because he will get on base and that guarantees the heart of our order will bat the first inning, which could lead to MORE trouble.
