CHICAGO -- Two-way star Shohei Ohtani won't pitch Friday for the Los Angeles Angels because of a sore right arm that could sideline him as a pitcher for the rest of the season.
"If there's any kind of lingering soreness, you may not see him pitch," Angels manager Joe Maddon said before Thursday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Ohtani (9-2, 3.36 ERA) felt soreness while playing catch Wednesday. Maddon said he raised the possibility of the likely American League MVP being shut down on the mound for the rest of the season during a meeting.
Maddon said there were no plans for Ohtani to be examined by a doctor, nor has it been determined when he would try to resume playing catch.
Ohtani, 27, hasn't pitched since Sept. 10, when he was tagged for six runs on nine hits in 3⅓ innings in a loss at Houston.
Maddon said Ohtani would like to continue pitching in an attempt to get his 10th victory.
"[Ten wins] always looks better than nine," Maddon said. "But you can't let that be the driving factor."
The arm discomfort won't prevent Ohtani from continuing to serve as a designated hitter. Ohtani entered Thursday's game against the White Sox ranked second in the major leagues with 44 home runs and 74 extra-base hits and fourth with a .599 slugging percentage.

Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez passed Hall of Famer Johnny Bench on Monday for the most home runs in a season by a primary catcher in MLB history. Perez hit his 46th home run in the fifth inning of the Royals' 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians.
"I thank God for this," Perez said after the game. "That was amazing. ... That was a dream, dream come true. It's just unbelievable for me."
Bench's previous record stood since 1970 when he led MLB in home runs (45). Perez is the MLB leader in RBIs (115) and is tied with Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the home run lead.
Prior to this year, Perez had not hit more than 27 home runs in any season during his major-league career.

St. Louis rode Tyler O'Neill's and Paul Goldschmidt's 30th homers and Jose Rondon's pinch-hit two-run shot for their 8-5 win in Game 1 while O'Neill's three-run shot and a pair of solo homers by Lars Nootbaar powered their 12-4 victory in Game 2.
The 14 consecutive wins are tied for the most since the Cardinals joined the National League in 1892. They also won 14 in a row in 1935.

Manager Mike Shildt said the pair of victories on Friday mirrored a collective approach that has made the Cardinals suddenly look formidable down the stretch.
"Today and the whole time, it's been a complete team effort,'' Shildt said. "Across the board, if you look today, you can pretty much name everybody.
"It's a special group. You've got real pros. When you've got that consistency, special things happen.''.
The Cardinals are the eighth team in history to record a 14-game win streak or better in September (or later).
"Everybody is kind of feeding off each other's energy right now," said Nootbaar, an outfielder who hit his fourth and fifth homers in his 52nd game. "You want to join the party, kind of. When you're loose and playing your game, you think you can beat anybody."
The one piece of bad news for St. Louis from Game 1 is shortstop Edmundo Sosa left the game after getting hit by a pitch in a hand. X-rays were negative.
"Thankfully, it looks like no fracture," manager Mike Shildt said. "It was scary looking for sure."
Shildt indicated Sosa could miss three to five days.
