The Cowboys landed a big fish in rookie lineman La'el Collins on Thursday, but Dallas might not be done generating headlines on offense.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM on Friday that he would consider trading away the team's 2016 first-round pick to acquire a game-changing running back or blue-chip defensive talent.

"I'd be reluctant to, but certainly if the right situation came along that could improve us now, with where we are with (35-year-old quarterback) Tony Romo, his career and where we are with what we've put together, it's a good time to go for it," Jones said, per Fox Sports Southwest.

Jones was simply answering the question, but it leaves the door open for the Cowboys to potentially make an eleventh-hour run at Adrian Peterson, the All-Pro Vikings running back who hasn't been shy about his reluctance to continue his career in Minnesota.

The Vikings have shown zero interest in parting with A.P., but if he makes it difficult on the team, it's fair to wonder if Dallas could ultimately wrest Peterson away with a first-rounder.

"It's a bitter pill to swallow," Jones said. "I've done that two times, and I'm telling you, that hurts bad the next draft day."

While Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has dished out plenty of poetic white noise about Darren McFadden, landing Peterson would deep-six that suspect offseason narrative -- while thrusting Dallas right back into the Super Bowl conversation.

I'm not gonna say how to run that team up I-45. And Peterson is an upgrade over any and everything currently on their roster at the RB position.

That said

I wouldn't trade for him. THAT offensive line they have now, hell my old ass could rush for at least 1,100 yards behind them. Anyone could run behind that line so they honestly could go cheap on the position because that's the best OL in football, hands down.

I'm not as in tuned as other members of this board are with that team, but I do believe there are more pressing needs that can be addressed.

I'm just here so I don't get fined

Jerry don't do it. Keep building your team with draft picks. Don't bite the bullet. Vikings have no type of leverage to be getting a 1st round pick in return. Either they trade AP or if he chooses he can sit out and get 12 million dollars.

Vikings have all the leverage.

You do realize AP will get fined $30,000 PER DAY for sitting out?

id make that trade in a heartbeat

especially when you got 3 first rounds picks this year and that pick next year will be late in the first round

AD will get 2000 yards behind that line and wear defenses out

i would not give up more than that tho

Wouldn't be the first time. Keyshawn and TO fucked shit up so bad they ended up being a detriment to the team. These guys always end up getting traded. That fine shit will only get you so far when guys just showing up so they won't get fined lol. If Vikings think its a come up to keep a disgruntled player on the roster for 12.5 million than so be it. BUt its in their best interest to get something for him even if it is a 2nd rounder.

I wouldn't trip on it but it just reaks of old Jerry. Hypothetically if Romo's career is over this year and he gets hurt in week 2 or 3......you can't even get his replacement next year because you traded your 1st rounder away.

I just don't like the message it sends but I can already see them using that argument for why. They got 3 first round talents and only had 1 first round pick. I get it.

I just don't think this offense needs AP. Sure it could use him and it would make us favorites but you've used all these resources on your offensive line for a reason.

A 1st round for a AP who may or may not be himself is still worth the risk. I Just don't like the message it sends. Its that trade two 1st rounders for JOey Galloway because you think you a Joey Galloway away from winning or trading a 1st and a 3rd for Roy Williams because you a Roy Williams away.

youre not picking next year until 27, 28, 29, or 30

i like randle but he isnt punishing defenses and making them quit

AD does that. You need 1 yard in playoff game...AD is getting you that.

Imo, trading a late pick for the best back in football, with the best oline in football = super bowl.

to me this isnt a jerry move this is all stephen

and i love everything stephen has been doing so far

keep what we have......pick a RB in the next draft....
or sign Chris Johnson to solidify that position

Peterson would be lethal but I think the Vikings call his bluff. They got the money and the hall of fame keys. He needs to play this season and ball out. Would you risk your franchise cornerstone being MVP on another team?:dunno:

its hard to market the guy to your fanbase when he doesnt want to be there

you cant sell his jerseys, you cant put him in local ads, etc.

at this point they have to trade him

I look at it as a family environment up there. I believe the Minnesota fans understand his frustrations but still have a lot of support for 'em. They're just going to let him vent and when he makes it back to camp, it's business as usual.

I agree, getting Peterson would put the Cowboys over the top. And you have take exploit that window of opportunity. However, I don't see this trade happening. Nor would I do it, if I were the Vikings.

They are just going to continue to play games (PR wise) and stall him out. Oh, we can't/ couldn't get equal value for him. Don't look forward to this happening.

if all it took was a 2016 #1 for peterson, hell YEAH you make that trade. now if they are talking other shit...should have taken dude from Wisconsin, hell even that small ass dude from Nebraska would have worked in the 3rd round.

they fucked up not picking up a RB with that sick ass line.

dude from wisconsin went early in the 1st

Id be tempted but its an all-in move. For longterm thinking Id consider going to get Justin Houston from the Chiefs since hes feeling some type of way towards KC for being tagged and still hasnt signed the tender last i checked.

This is why Jerry doesn't have full control anymore

Now don't get me wrong he still has the final say cuz it's still his team

But there are people who strongly influence him from doing dumb shit

Jerry never wins trade ever always end up on the short end of the stick

Someway somehow

Its gonna fail bro.....I already know. Its just too good to be true and them trades always bite Jerry in the ass. I don't think Stephen plays that bullshit. AS a matter of fact just a week or two ago Stephen said "We're not trading 1st rounders for guys over 30.....".

Last time we took a former RB from Tennessee we got fleeced bad(Eddie George). All these years later I still get pissed off anytime I hear his name.

Naw we didn't get fleeced. Cheap contract. Eddie was just done by the time we got him. He must've been around 29 or 30. The speed and athleticism was gone. I think CJ still got some of his but i'm not trying to find out. I'd rather go with what we have then him.

Look nigga

YALL not getting ADd

We don't need him anyway.

Ayy man you can't underestimate who's available at them picks though. Aaron Rodgers fell into the late round of the draft his year. Shit look at this year...you had Malcolm Brown, Randy Gregory and all these other instant guys still there.

I don't think this is Stephen. He straight up said he wouldn't do no trade like this. This Jerry thinking here. Niggas gotta protect Jerry from himself at times. He just needs to be there to close shit. He gets whoever he wants. But he needs that guy like his son who stops him from drafting Johnny Football instead of Zach Martin.

Why not pick up Ray Rice for cheap have Rice and McFadden as your 1-2 backs running behind that o line would be great. Rice took no hits last year so he's fresh can catch and is durable. Shit you already have hardy and Gregory on the team so fuck the media.

Can't trade a number one for a 30 YO running back. Not even AD.

What no one points out, is that a lot of the moves the Cowboys are making are due to making wise decisions the last few years. Getting rid of bad contracts, not signing over the hill free agents. That leaves you with the cap space to sign Hardy and Collins. Hell, holding the line with Murray even.

Think about it, the Eagles are paying 12 million a year for a back that they have openly admitted will be one of committee.

Cowboys, don't start fucking up now. Hire some hoes to distract him, and let Stephen and Will McClay get back to work.

Rice is washed up. Just because someone has a name you recognize and used to be a good player, it doesn't mean he's still a great player.

Randle is better than Rice right now.

Makes sense. It will probably be a late round pick and if making a run, a well rested AP is a big step in that direction.Looking at selections 26-31 of this past draft, who wouldn't you trade for Peterson? If we were talking a pick between 1 and 5, i'd probably balk, but a #28is pick for Peterson is damn near a no brainer to me. Him behind that line is instant Superbowl caliber offense.

No he's not Rice had a bad year with our horrible line. Then he got suspended for the whole year but if you watched him in the preseason the game he got to play he looked fast and like his old self again. He bulked up after the super bowl and lost some speed and played behind our poor line. He's never been given a second chance. He's way better than da die and McFadden. He just has that big DV following him.

I cant lie, I know AP for first rounder is not the best football move, even though AP is 30 but no contact last year, but its not a smart move. Now AP for a packaged 2 and 4th next year, hell yeah! but that unlikely. Getting Jamal Charles is cool but he is not all that durable but neither had McFadden appeared. We have a good stable of average to good running backs with what appears to be an outstanding line,a big defensive signing in secondary or line would be better suited if even that's necessary
