Average 401k Balance by age

Thanks man! Have a question for you. What funds do you use to maximize your dividends? I’d like to build my portfolio to get a strong quarterly yield and a great monthly yield. Time frame is 15 years for Max. I’ve looked at some Dividend Aristocrats and some Dividend Kings. I’m in the building phase.

My work 401k --> FXAIX, FSMAX, RGAGX

My personal investments --> VFIAX, VWELX (50/50 stocks and bonds), VSMAX, VTSAX

With my personal investments, I put money into them every payday. They call that dollar cost averaging when you keep putting a certain amount in every month non stop.

I paid my house off so I don't have a mortgage or car note. I got a 2017 with 32,000 miles so it's not a hooptie. I don't have any credit card debt and no student loan debt, which means I can put more away

I put 12% of my salary into my 401k and my job matches 4% so that's a decent 16%.

Monthly for my personal I put, VFIAX $450, VWELX $350, VSMAX $300, VTSAX $350

If my financial circumstances changed, then I can put less in per month. For now I'm stashing away as much as possible.

Im 42 ,I have 401 ,457 also 401 ,457 Roth no matching. No credit card debt except Benz lease . Coop paid off and 6 months savings and my pension at 57 . No Investments except about $5000 in robinhood off the $1800 I put 3 years ago , looks like I need catching up lol I'd be on welfare if it wasn't for BGOL .

I started with both of those myself. Far as your future endeavors, i am targeting the same things myself. Real estate simply because it makes so much sense to do so, tech because i'm big on science /technology (I work in IT).

I'm keeping an eye on PSI.
Expense ratio is a little high for me but it covers the semiconductors market. I didn't get into them when they were around 111. They are ~119 now.

On some real shit though; there are a generation of folks who are completely fucked. No pensions; not enough income to put anything away; obligations early as fuck in life that eat at their pockets (kids)......say what you will about older black folks even ones who live in the hood; many got two to four checks a month coming in from pensions and SS.

Black middle class in every major city in America was created off of union heavy industry and public sector jobs; jobs that had virtually guaranteed employment and retirement benefits including healthcare. Like I said, lot of older folks who are in the hood and look like they are struggling on the outside are quietly doing ok to well. The generations after them; they/we are in trouble if we don’t have our shit together. Now, a great wealth transfer is going to take place in the next 10-20 years, but will beneficiaries be smart with this capital, or will they fuck it off?

my job don't even offer a 401k...but I do have a 457 plan that doing very well. And I have a retirement plan from the state of Tennessee.

next step is a Roth..
457 is clutch because you can take a withdrawal without plenty before you turn 59 1/2.

Trump was good while riding Obama's jock. Damn near every fund that is available to me performed terribly.
Man the Vanguard Total Stock Market Admiral Shares (VTSAX) did fantastic under Trump and Obama; your retirement doesn’t have a comparable total stock market index fund, or even an S&P 500 index fund?

Please use this as a reliable way to rate your 401K performance.

First visit Morning Star and look up a fund you got money in---> https://www.morningstar.com

In this example I'm going to use Vanguard Total Stock Market Fund. (VTSAX)
https://www.morningstar.com/funds/xnas/vtsax/quote

Things to take note of:

1) Star Rating this is a measure of a funds risk-adjusted return. Obviously the higher the start rating, typically indicates better performance. Top star rating is a 5. Personally I make sure I pick funds that are a 4 or 5 and nothing less.

2) Expense Ratio (this funds expense ratio is 0.040% which is very low) You want a low expense ratio because the fund manager takes less. Higher the expense ratio the more of your money they get.

3) Growth of 10,000 this metric is used to gauge your funds performance over a 10 year period. Meaning, if you put $10,000 into this fund and let it sit for 10 years allowing dividends (money your money has made) to be reinvested. Per this chart 10 grand could balloon to some where around $38,000.

4) Portfolio this is a link just below the funds name at the top of the page. This will help you see what industries and companies this fund holds funds in. Spend some time here and see what the biggest shares are. This will also help you select others funds that don't have the same holdings, thus allowing you to diversify. Can't have too many funds that are all top heavy with Apple, Microsoft and Amazon, it's good to mix it up.

I'll stop here and let some of the other Family chime in. Using morningstar and these 4 options helped me to get my 401K investments into better producing and better performing funds. Keeping fee's low is a huge must because most companies won't tell you that majority of the funds in their portfolio are very fee heavy.

Growth of 10,000 is important because you need a decent general idea of this funds performance over time. If you put 10,000 in a fund and leave it for 10 years and that 10,000 only grows to 15,000 to 18,000 then you know that's not something that is going to help you build faster.
Also worth noting; you might be able to access the premium version of Morningstar thru your local library’s website for free.

Damn bro. Impressive. I need to get the game from people like you. Good stuff.

I would suggest you max out the 401k to the $19,500 if you aren't already doing that.

Once you do the $19,500 then you can't contribute any more for the year.

If you married, I know people that would put their whole check into their 401k and live off their wife's money.

When when they hit the max of $19,500 they spend their paycheck again.

Family you need to review what funds your 401K money sits in.

If you don't mind, share what funds you got money in. No need for dollar amounts just fund stock ticker names.

For example I got money in FXAIX, FSMAX and RGAGX.

:smh: I’m going to be working the rest of my life.
You not fucking lying.....shit I'm trying to go hard in my 30's and end this shit on a good note because with the way the dollar is decreasing in the US....I'm gonna have to go somewhere else to make it this ain't gonna cut it. I aint' trying to be living off my kids and shit fuck that.

You need to holla at your HR. What are your choices?
I will have to log into work to check and lists but none of our choices did shit under Trump or Bush 2. Shit is rebounding now and our shit is controlled by our union contracts via negotiation. My company stock went up 12.35 today.

Thats fantastic. If they provide an ESPP hop on that immediately. You could make a killing if its shooting up like that.

I don't tell people how to spend they money but damn that Crypto shit is scary....I know scared money don't make no money but damn...I'd rather put my 401k in real estate.

You buggin. I'll take the 6000% gains in 2 MONTHS
Thank You......

Seriously bro you are doing really well. I dont know your rate of return but let's say it is 10% per year, you money will double in 7.2 years.

Keep maxing out the 401k if you can. It is $19,500 per year now.

If you married and your wife is working even better. Have her max her's out too.

Then do the Roth IRA max of 6k per person.

You will be shocked how the money will just double like boom!

The is my path right here...The chips are stacking...Made a $80K in 2020.

I have just 400k on my 401k, with 150k from my home sales and a full pension in the next couple of years. My worries are what the housing market might look like (seems like homes are going through the roof). I think I might draw 200k from my 401k with the 150k to buy a home I will enjoy?

My shit has more than doubled since Trump. I might be back in business for retirement at 55 at thecurrenttrajectory. Here is a copy of my current savings. I still have my 2 pensions from Boeing Commercial and Boeing Defense. I also have my State of Texas savings from teaching. Shit my wife's Shit is tight too. If my youngest get a scholarship too we out this camp.

I see you have 3 Lifecycle funds you're contributing to. Just curious, what's the idea behind that? I currently have just 1, and I was trying to see if I'm missing out.

My 401k + IRAs are roughly $440k total with a brokerage at around $105k (took in a good amount of realized profits in February but it's getting hammered right now).

I just looked at the historical average and they were the best of the rest for the selections that were available to me.

Bro. I wanted to ask you about the signature. Do you deposit money in that account and get the 8.5%?

Is it stable? What do you think about it?
