For many Americans, 2020 was a tough year financially. Between March 2020 and January 2021, around 1.6 million individuals took out savings from their 401(k) plans under the CARES Act, which allowed those affected by the pandemic to withdraw up to $100,000 without incurring the usual early withdrawal penalty, according to retirement-plan provider Fidelity. That represents 6.3% of eligible individuals using Fidelity’s workplace savings platform.

But despite the volume of withdrawals from 401(k) accounts under the CARES Act, a third of 401(k) savers increased their savings rate in 2020. Fidelity also saw record contributions from women in the fourth quarter of 2020.

The overall average 401(k) balance came to $121,500 as of the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Fidelity.

So many folks will simply not be able to retire.

Where's a good place to retire abroad?

For now Im looking at places like Panama, costa rica or Belize. Panama is definitely on the list but I will have to see where the dollar is in about 20 years. I already live a simple life, I just want to be somewhere with good weather, brown people and a chance to clear my head from Amerikkka's bullshit.

Gotta a classmate who just retired and moved to Panama. Still trying to get the full info

Especially, our people. Suicide will be the new 401K plan for a lot of people in the next 30 years.

this is the list if you want striking distance to see fam and easy transition. be moderate in spanish, i would add colombia. the island of san andres has a black english speaking population from jamaica.

I have been considering retiring abroad. I was telling some of my coworkers how when I retire if I decide to work again it will not be because of financial circumstances. They looked at me like I was crazy smh

This is why I will plan my exit accordingly. If I can't retire here I will go elsewhere that probably has better health care and lower cost of living. I've given up on the idea of staying here in old age.

Man Africa is on the list...Very inexpensive and just a beautiful place...I've only been to Lagos (wouldn't retire there) and Cape Town (very, very slept on and nice), but would like to visit Ghana in the near future. Only thing about Cape Town is that shit is far is fuck from the USA, but nice as shit...

Question, what about people going off work with Injuries? Wont Workers Compensation pay them? I’m asking because I’m seeing a lot of people take that route lately.

Hopefully Cape Town won't have too many fluctuating water issues but that is on the To visit list.

Yeah I'm on track, but most aren't. I want to retire abroad, but at the same time, I find value in family and friends and going someplace new and not knowing anyone isn't very appealing. But...buy a home abroad, stay there x months out of the year, come home x months out of the year sounds fun.

Yeah someone was telling me about that the other day. I had no idea there was a water issue, but appartently so. Nonethless, still a dope city....One of the 7 natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain, is located there as well.

I ain’t even gonna front my 401k balance is trash right now

Don't feel bad. I have 3 different accounts and all don't hit $100K...yet.
One of them I had cash sitting around from an old job when I was laid off. Put some of that into ETFs and they are growing slowly. The other ones are targeted date plans so I won't even worry about those for another 20 years or so.
Now I just need to invest enough to get steady cashflow. Either way, the plan is to cash out of here, buy a reasonable place (or rent which really won't bother me) and enjoy the final years of living. Not like I have kids so my plan is very doable.

My Mom's going through that process right now. They putting her through the ringer.

Damn shame that's what it has to come down to for some people after funding this bitch with taxes for all their working lives. :smh: Then if you just happen to make money when you retire overseas, the U.S. will tax you.

Before Bush 2 I was at 300k during his fucked 8 years my shit dropped to 90k. By the end of Obama's 2nd term my shit grew to nearly 500k. 1 term under trump punk ass my shit is hovering around 200k. Republicans stay fucking our money up.

Let the hotep's and trump dick lovers on twitter talk, Trump was the best thing to ever happened to the stock market...lol

Using the average as an indicator of greatness is something that dumb husbands do. That does not do anything for a good analysis.

You want to see what most people have or the mode.

That would be a true indicator of success.

The average is the total sum divided by the number of people involved.

That result is truly meaningless.

Few people can be the average cause the average is a number that doesn't exist!

The average of 20, 20, 70, 100, 100, 100 = 68

What am I doing with the number 68?

Naw bro. Something is wrong here. Republicans are GOOD for the 401k in general.

We in a global pandemic and have reignited our wars.

No other country can be rich while at war.

Is there a list that shows how much you should have in your 401K at your age? I am in the 50-59 range right now and I am only 40.

You can't go by shit like this. You need something that shows median, not average. Also, 300K for retirement in Dallas or Birmingham probably is more than enough but not nearly enough in DC or NYC.

Why the median? You need the mode. You wanna see what most people are doing.

You are doing better than most still. The saddest shit is that We have people 60+ with literally nothing saved at all. Also, never let these cacs and coons forget that they cosigned bush privatizing social security right before the entire economy collapsed. :smh:
