Australian rapper Iggy Azalea is about to take over the U.S.

Calling someone a successful model isn’t usually seen as a put-down. But Iggy Azalea has a definite problem with it.

“I find it so weird that I’m called a model,” says the 23-year-old recording artist. “I’m signed to a modeling agency — but as an artist. It’s the same deal as Chris Brown and Fergie and so many others. But they’re described as artists and I’m called a model.”

Sound a tad defensive? Azalea has some cause to be. She wants to be taken seriously as a rapper — and in certain circles, she already is. She has earned major coverage in genre publications like XXL, as well as in Vogue, while developing a healthy cult following for her early mix tapes.

But with the Tuesday release of her major-label debut, “The New Classic,” she has to rope in a wider audience, despite being hampered by three hip-hop hurdles: She’s female. She’s white. And she’s Australian.

This, in a field still thought of by many as the realm of hyper-masculine American black males.

Moving here to start a career seemed like less of a risk than staying in Australia with no job and no diploma.

“Of the three, being Australian is the biggest roadblock,” Azalea asserts.

Lingering suspicions about race tend to fade, she says, with exposure to her skills. And Azalea can point to Nikki Minaj as a role model for recent female triumph in the genre. It also helps that she shares with Minaj a booty that inspires nearly as much ink, and photo shoots, as her rhymes.

Even so, Azalea admits to feeling a bit awed by her genre’s roots in this country. “America is the pinnacle,” she says.

That’s why she moved here seven years ago, at age 16, from a spit of a town, Mullumbimby, in New South Wales. She describes the town as a mix of farmers and alternative types, drawn to Chinese medicine and crystals. Azalea first fell in love with America when she visited L.A. at age 11 with her parents. “Seeing all these ridiculous characters in Hollywood, I was infatuated,” she says.

Iggy Azalia Iggy Azalea, 23, fell in love with the U.S. on her first visit, at age 11, and says "America is the pinnacle."

She was drawn to the music too — specifically U.S. hip-hop stars who could rap in double time, like Twista, Andre 3000 or Missy Elliott, who Azalea calls her sole female influence.

Azalea (born Amethyst Amelia Kelly) took her stage name from her childhood dog, Iggy, and the name of the street she grew up on. When she came to the U.S., she settled in Miami because she knew a family living there. Azalea says her parents didn’t mind her move since she had already dropped out of high school and lived on her own. “Moving here to start a career seemed like less of a risk than staying in Australia with no job and no diploma,” she says.

Azalea first turned heads three years ago when her homemade videos for “Pu$$y” and “Two Times” went *viral. In 2012, she became the first female, as well as the first non-American, to be included in XXL’s annual “10 Freshmen” cover story of promising young rappers.

In the time since, the budding star went through a protracted back-and-forth between potential label deals — one with T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint, the other with Interscope. She finally landed at hip-hop’s most prestigious company, Def Jam, partly because she was first signed to a U.K. deal with the related label Mercury. Her head start in England earned two top 10 hits over there.

Meanwhile, America hasn’t produced a major female hip-hop star since Minaj, or, to a lesser degree, M.I.A. Such reigns come years after the peak period of distaff rap, back in the ’90s to early 2000s, when Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Missy Elliott, Rah Digga, Eve and Trina all ruled.

Several recent women, besides Azalea, have tons of rap hype behind them, including Kreayshawn and Azealia Banks. But they’ve yet to blow up.

Azalea says she’s baffled by the lack of fem power in the genre, but she’s confident it can turn around. “Women are the biggest buyers of music,” Azalea says. “If you’re the kind of women other women want to be friends with, it should be fine. If you’re a woman other girls hate, it might be bad.”

She envisions an even brighter future due to globalization. “So many fans of rap are not American,” she says. “They need someone who can represent them. Sooner or later, they’ll find one.”

Farber: Summer sounds like Iggy Azalea as Aussie rapper bests other musicians vying for top spot

song-summer-battle.jpg

Iggy Azalea is the star of the summer 2014 song, ahead of other musicians contending for top spot

She raps her 'Fancy' and guests on Ariana Grande's 'Problem'; others in contention for top summer song are Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Calvin Harris

song25f-1-web.jpg

Every summer has its song. This year's belongs to big-booty’ed Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea.

She’s the only star to appear on two hits that have what every summer song needs — the attitude, sex appeal and catchiness to serenade everyone’s summer parties and flings.

Azalea raps on the in-your-face hit “Fancy,” as well as the smash “Problem,” which mixes her snarky verse with a sweet lead vocal from Ariana Grande.

That one-two punch has some observers referring to Azalea as this year’s Pharrell.

“All she needs is her own cool hat,” jokes Billboard’s chart guru Gary Trust.

In 2013, Pharrell sang on two of the top three warm season smashes: “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk and “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke.

“Like Pharrell, Iggy is competing with herself,” adds Sean Ross, radio play analyst for the consulting company Edison Research. “She’s got the momentum going.”

Having scored a No. 1 debut on Billboard’s Digital Song chart earlier this month.“Problem” already ranks as the biggest-selling single of the year. It has sold more than 675,000 copies in a few fast weeks, while holding the pole position on iTunes in more than 50 countries. It helps that the song has a hot sax hook not unlike the one in a smash from last summer, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop.”

Meanwhile, the strutting smash “Fancy” streamed 2.7 million times on Spotify in early May. That marks the biggest week for any single track in the history of that service. The week after, it increased its streams by another million, proving its growth.

According to Billboard figures, Ms. Azalea ranks as only the third woman in the 56-year history of its Hot 100 Song list to make the top five with her first two entries.

Nadine Santos, program director for New York top-40 station 92.3 FM, believes that, while the Grande-fronted “Problem” has done better so far, “Fancy” will trump it. “It will definitely be the summer song for us,” she says.
song25f-6-web.jpg

Ariana Grande's catchy hit 'Problem' is clearly a contender for top song of the summer. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Clear Channel Ariana Grande's catchy hit 'Problem' is clearly a contender for top song of the summer.

The ascent of Azalea and Grande sets up a virtual gender war. While the stud party of Pharrell, Thicke and Daft Punk ruled 2013, this time, women are in charge.

It only emphasizes the payback aspect that both of this year’s likely warm-weather anthems “f--- off,” female empowerment statements. To add to their screw-you attitudes, “Fancy” features a vocal cameo from Charli XCX who, with the duo Icona Pop, had the bitchiest hit of last year: “I Love It.”

In another turnaround, last summer’s champs stressed hook-up sex. This year’s give eros the boot. “If anything, they’re anti-romantic songs,” says Trust. “That gives them their edge.”

They’re hardly the only singles with a leg up in the summer song sweepstakes.
song25f-7-web.jpg

Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” has so far generated more than 1 million “Shazams” (the number of times subscribers use that phone app to identify a song’s title and performer). Tellingly, “Sing” was produced by warm-weather czar Pharrell. “The song has that Justin Timberlake, guitar vibe people have dug before,” says Peter Szabo, Shazam’s music director. “But it has a different approach. It will definitely be the breakout hit that allows him to get to the next level.”

“Sing” also represents an attention-getting genre change for Sheeran. His debut album sold more than 800,000 copies in 2012-13, based on a pop singer-songwriter sound. “Sing” moves him into soul.

Another male Brit with a shot at the top is Sam Smith. His song “Stay With Me,” released last month, has been “shazammed” more than 15 million times. The singer also holds the rare distinction of serving as a musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” before releasing a full album in the U.S.

Then again, his song is a ballad, a style that “has a harder time at pop radio right now,” according to Ross. “Top 40, in general, has become the format of tempo.”

One song that has no problem maintaining its danceable beat, or its warm allure, is the posthumously released Michael Jackson cut “Love Never Felt So Good.” Not only does it feature a superimposed cameo from Justin Timberlake, it has the retro-’70s-funk vibe of recent hits like “Get Lucky” or “Blurred Lines.” It made Billboard’s Top 40 on impact last week.

Other contenders this year hedge their bets by sticking summer right in the title of their song, or in the name of the group itself. Calvin Harris has the hot dance song “Summer,” while there’s also juice behind the hit “Don’t Stop” by Five Seconds of Summer, a boy band vying to become the next One Direction.
Ed Sheeran's "Sing" has been put through the Shazam process more than a million times. Ed Sheeran's "Sing" has been put through the Shazam process more than a million times.

New York may even have its own micro summer song: “Bailando,” by Enrique Iglesias with guest Sean Paul. “It has that Latin-reggae, dance vibe that falls in line with what this city embraces,” says 92.3’s Santos.

At the same time, a stealth ditty from overseas could pull an upset in the summer song race. “Rather Be,” by the British act Clean Bandit, went No. 1 in the U.K. earlier this year. It then performed that same feat in Italy, France and Spain. “It’s the first song to go No. 1 on the worldwide Shazam chart without being released in the U.S.,” says Szabo.

Atlantic Records plans to issue that beat-happy single here June 17. It’s just one sneak-from-behind song that could upset the Azalea juggernaut. Trust says there may be a July — or even an August — surprise from a major female star like Adele (with her first single to follow up the album “21”), not to mention possible late-breaking entries from Taylor Swift, Rihanna, or the queen of surprises: Beyoncé.

“It’s a long summer,” says Ross. “You can never be completely sure what song will have that staying power.”

Heads are still mad about this chick's success but to quote myself from 03-12-12:
Niggas were saying the SAME shit about Nicki Minaj just a couple of years back.
That Iggy bitch is gonna blow the fuck up.
Why?
Because she has a little bit of skill (like Nicki) and she looks like a model with a little more booty.
Iggy-Azalea.jpg

But the MAIN reason that she is gonna blow is is she is a bad white bitch saying NASTY SHIT.
Who was the last bad white bitch who was rated R? Most of these chicks are PG-PG-13. They are safe. She is rated R. Most white chicks are afraid to go R these days because they are afraid of how they are perceived OR they do it wrong and it fails. She's on the right track. If she plays her role right, she can end up being rap's Madonna.
White folks pay to see other white folks.
I know its contrary to what people want to think but I'm just keepin' it real. The white mainstream is just waiting and hoping for a chick like her. White folks love rap and they don't have any female representation with that kind of marketable potential.

White people push their people to the top.

Re: Australian rapper Iggy Azalea is about to take over the U.S. Read more: http://w

This is one of the most ignorant articles I have ever read in my life.

For starters, the author called M.I.A. an American star when everyone with half a brain knows she's a British Sri Lankan.

Also, you can't immigrate to the US just because you "Know a family in Miami". It would have had to be HER own family and even in that case it would still be very difficult.

How does trash like this ever get published?
