at the xmen screening.....

That's the common comparison.
Xavier is definitely King while Magnus is an even more militant Shabazz: he's not talking self defense, he's talking about taking over.

But aint none of the X-Men beefing or anything like that right, they're all 1 but have 2 diffrent views??

Exactly! Picture the differing styles and attitudes between MLK and Malcolm X and you pretty much have the dynamic.

Seen the matinee today, definitely the best X-Men movie. At the very lest they discovered that they can make a X-Men movie without Wolverine hogging all the fucking scene. I put it on the same level as Dark Knight maybe better because the Villains were top notch and Magneto was as good as it gets. Dude came off like James Bond the assassin in the first 40 mins.

:eek::eek::eek:

I just read an interview with the director who just made these EXACT TWO points!

The question was about how there was no mention of the civil rights movement, considering the era the story takes place in. He acknowledged that the Xavier- Magneto dynamic was reportedly based on Malcolm / Martin, but said that it was a hotbutton issue.. and didn't really want to take it there.

excerpt taken from interview said:
Q:The film discusses a lot of gender issues, but it's also set at the same time as the Civil Rights Movement. Did you consider looking more closely at race issues when planning the film?

A: We talked about it, because, you know, they say X-Men was based on Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. But, I think I had enough political subplot in this movie.

We've already discussed in the next one, does the Civil Rights movement become part of it, if we do a sequel? That's a real hot potato, as well, still. But you can only put so much in a film. As I said, the sequel could happen. I don't know yet. I don't even like talking about sequels, because the film could tank and that's that.

He also said that he has always wanted to make a Bond movie, and he told the actor playing Magneto to do so as if he were Bond- Also told Kevin Bacon to play Shaw as if he were Bond villain.

interview said:
Did you have a favourite in the ensemble?

It's obvious, but Magneto. I sat down with Michael, and I said, "You know, I've always wanted to do a Bond movie. Imagine you're Bond, but you don't have to use gadgets. You can do shit that other people can't. You're the ultimate assassin in the world that no one knows about." I've always loved Magneto. It's weird, because his power's bloody odd, if you think about it. It's not that great a power. But there's something about Magneto that I've always loved.

Sebastian Shaw's very much reminiscent of a Bond villain. Was that deliberate on your part?

Totally. You Only Live Twice. It was all about trying to create a nuclear war. So, You Only Live Twice was very influential on that.

Also, I've been a fan of Kevin's for a long, long time. And Kevin had that bravado that Shaw needed. Because Shaw's a difficult character. The whole thing about absorbing energy - how do you do that? And then you see him with the ponytail and the dressing up in the cravats. If you get it wrong, I don't want to be like Stormbreaker, where you get these villains where you can't take them seriously.

So, I just sat down with Kevin and we said, "Look, let's make him like a Bond villain, where he's suave, debonair, charming."

read it all here

dude does NOT pull any punches in the interview, either!

your rep will be intact man.

This was a GREAT movie.

I was kinda pissed about some things (When you see, you'll understand). But besides that, the plot was consistent, the acting was great, and the Effects + Action scenes were tastefully done.

They did Xavier justice in this movie.

But the greatest thing about this flick was MAGNETO-

Magneto was the star of it. The submarine pull was awesome. But the shit he did with that coin.....

On a Side note,

The guy who played Magneto would make a GREAT Bond.

For the Canadian fam'. Contest expires June 15th.

Just came back, First Class is on Dark Knight's level and well written. Magneto took this flick to cloud nine.

First class was not written for kids:dance:

just got back from watching the movie. If they decide to do any sequels they need to keep everybody involved with this movie. This shit was nice.

I saw it last night at the screener. Best one yet. It's up there with dark knight in character developement.

Magneto is a bad motherfucker. Fuck professor X's view I would have........ done the same thing with the coin LOL

Ok, this sounds good, which means I'm going to go see it, which means I have to get the fuck up out of this thread. This is BGOL Black folks we're talking about. Guaranteed before the weekend is over some nigga will come in this thread and spoil the whole fucking movie :smh::lol::smh:

:hmm:

Man I kinda wanna see this movie again, this movie gave me a geek feeling like seeing spiderman on the big screen. Yes Magneto was the man in this. Yet Shaw.... that muthafucka was damn near a beast.

Great movie! Thanks, Voyuer. I didn't plan to see it before this thread. Definitely as good as Blade and Watchmen.

To Midnight Studio Comics, it was Dark Knight level at times but it wasn't all of the way there. For me, I'm not sure it has the replay value of The Dark Knight. I can watch that sh@! repeatedly. lol. You right though. It was definitely worth the $ and time.

i am feeling you on this. but that chick got a nice body (sans ass) and that stiff performance thing she has going kind of fits her character here.

Out side of January Jones stiffness and lack of said ass. This shit was on point.. will be seeing again. best of the X movies so far.

Michael Fassbender as Magneto,
Dude also killed his role as the British officer in Inglourious Basterds.

Just came from seeing the movie, myself and fam were pleased with the decision. I give it a solid 6.5-7. The dude that played xavier is a really good actor sold the character well..marvel have set themselves up very nicely for several prequels before the X-men that most people know. Though i must admit i think they missed a few jewels in terms of addressing the social landscape of the time tied in with the contrasting philosophies of X and Magneto.

Best X-Men flick by far. Going to see it again, caught it at midnight last night. Still pissed they didn't have any after credits scene!

I look forward to seeing the film, but his answers are cop outs. Hollywood never wants to deal with race, so I guess he erased the civil rights era from the film. Once again to enjoy the film black folks must suspend reality to enjoy a film. No different than the last 100 years of Hollywood. THanks.
I didn't go into this movie to be given a fucking history lesson ok. i went to see a movie about mutants shooting flames from their hands, not malcolm and martin. in the film jfk is still alive which mean that the march on washington did not even happen as yet. this film is based on the cuban missile crisis. BTW maybe you didn't seem to get it. but the mutants are the black people. look at what magneto was saying to beast and mystique about loving themselves. look at what mystique said to beast at the end; mutant and proud = black and proud. read between the lines. magneto = malcolm, professor X = Martin. check out when the x men comics first came out. not everything has to be up front in your face.

 Zoe Kravitz said the same thing. It's bullshit how they did the token black dude tho

You're both right. No need to argue fella's.

I didnt see the movie but if Darwin dies... it must be bullshit.

The whole point of his mutant is to adapt to any danger.

I didn't post the excerpts from the article because I agree with them, I thought it was relevant to what had been discussed.

I DO wish that civil rights had been at least acknowledged in the flick. It would have been very easy to give one of the black characters a line stating that people don't treat the white characters like shit until they find out they are mutants... whereas the blacks get treated like shit from jump street...

-I would have liked to see some black/brown folks get a chance to shine, and act in a heroic manner (and live through it!)
case in point, it is pretty disturbing to me that Vaughn mentions in the interview about the character Sunspot being taken out of the movie- IIRC, the character is from Brazil. Vaughn said that they couldn't get his power right or had some-such trouble "fitting him in" .. which pretty much sounded like bullshit to me. more like the 3 black people rule.

you know, you can have 2 black people in a movie, tv show, story etc... and it's all good. when you add that magical third one ... now it's a black movie.... :smh::smh::smh:

At the same time, we ARE dealing with established characters here, and I'd rather see them as I imagine them (from years of reading comics) than see them changed to some minority just to be "P.C". imo, Darwin's character was reminiscent of the Mimic, who died in one of the xmen's early adventures, and I don't remember seeing a character like Zoe anywhere, so I.M.O these two characters are placed in the movie (for good or ill, live, die or turn evil) and that gives blacks more representation than the comics did (to my memory)
