Just started a 385 reef aquarium. It's been running for about 2 months now. it's not filled with live stock yet, i'm kinda going to stock it slowly, i'll have pics up in a few

My kinda topic!!! I only fuck with hearty fish. I have 2 flowerhorns, 2 oscars, a green terror and a jack Dempsey . All these fish are Very Very aggressive but since I bought them all and raised them together they only seem to destroy any goldfish I put in the tank( though they did fuck this one hermit crab I had up). Trying to make room for this 180gal tank my uncles friend is selling so they will have more room.

Hearty fish can survive damn near anything!!!

edelvajr the best thing to do is stock it slowly. If you are starting out fresh with out an established sump/refugium. Slow is the best way. To many people get caught up in trying to get there tank weel populated and full of corals then the system crashes and they dont know why or hair algea takes over. My current tank has been up almost a year now and it is finally coming around but i have also put alot of work into it the last 3 months or so. Just remember Reef tanks are a 2nd job. But they are also the baddest tanks out there when done right.

yYea, thanks. I'm taking my time with the livestock. my refugium has a deep sand bed in one section, and some live rock and caulepera in another section. so i'm just giving that some time to become established with snails, copepods, amphipods, all that good stuff

I would take the caulerpa out and use straight cheato, Caulerpa has a tendency to go sexual and leech things back into the tank that could crash or semi crash your system. It will only do this at night so if you keep your light on your refugium on around the clock it wont be a problem. Make sure you add live rock rubble into the fuge if you have not done so already.

Just bought this etup from a dude here in town. Will be setting it up in about a 2 months after i buy needed equipment. This is a pic from the dude. It is a 215 starphire glass tank, cherry stand and canopy.

i am not a salt water guy....but i like the medium aggressive South American Ciclids. If you can find a couple of the Blue Jacks....they can set your tank off....plus they are Hardy

I can' fuck with aquariums at all. I'm still scarred from having grown up with an older brother who used to raised African Chiclids. He had 20 something aquariums, and he used to make me do all of the maintenance on them  Additionally, he used to make me go to the airport with him to pick up shipments from Lake Tanganyika. That shit would take all day. Then the nigga would drag me to fish shops with him, where he would stand around all fucking day talking fish with the owner. This was pre-internet, so fish dorks would have to seek each other out in person.

I'm  dying on the half filled tank pic!

Basic fish rules...

Spend time learning if you want a community tank or territorial....

Do not over populate your tank.....

know the growth of the fish and what size tank you will need...nothing worse than seeing a big-ass fish trapped like a brother in a cell...

know your fish diet...will they need more than flakes , feeder fish etc...

keep a check on temp and Ph level...you will learn salinity and acidity and how they can affect the coloration of your fish....

Basic..

If you optimize the water quality and diet of your fish...it will show...just like dogs...you can tell if the owner is going the full ten yards just by looking at the coat and temperment...same thing with the tank...judging by some of the pics you can see who is up on their fish game!

Some fish are bottom dwellers, some are surface dwellers, some need numbers/school some are solitary...you need to spend time on learning the fish BEFORE you even set foot in a pet store. When you do this, I assure you, most time you will find the fish you want you really have to do some searching for, and preparation for.

Do you want action in your tank? Do you want to sit and relax and watch slow interaction? How much time are you really gonna sit with the tank? sounds silly, but when you really think about this is the magic question.

Aquariums can really relax you. it will lower your blood pressure. and give you tranquility and peace...something alot of black folk need.

Don't buy a tank, just to drop a gold fish in, watch a bigger fish devour it, and walk away...only to come back a day or two later and repeat the process....

sump area, great to hide filters and grow macro algae for more filtration.
also serves as a place to do water changes and top off's. ( i do a water change once a month) (15 gals).
Does not look like this any more, had some coral death last summer due to heat issues, needed a chiller to keep temps around 78 degrees.

under the hood, x2 250 watt metal halide 14k double ended bulbs.
