Nope

Tell me how the fuck I have high nitrate and I changed like 3/4 of my water 2 times?

The significance of nitrates in the aquarium is arguably less understood by fish keepers than the effect of ammonia and nitrites. Although nitrates are not directly lethal in the way ammonia or nitrites are, over time high levels of nitrate have a negative effect on fish, plants and the aquarium environment in general.

Effect on Fish
Fish will feel the impact of nitrates by the time the levels reach 100 ppm, particularly if levels remain there. The resulting stress leaves the fish more susceptible to disease and inhibits their ability to reproduce.

High nitrate levels are especially harmful to fry and young fish, and will affect their growth. Furthermore, conditions that cause elevated nitrates often cause decreased oxygen levels, which further stress the fish.

Nitrates and Algae
Elevated nitrates are a significant contributor to undesirable algae growth. Nitrate levels as low as 10 ppm will promote algae growth. Algae blooms in newly setup tanks are usually due to elevated nitrate levels.

Although plants utilize nitrates, if nitrates rise faster than the plants can use them, the plants can become overgrown with algae, ultimately leading to their demise.

Where Do Nitrites Come From?
Nitrates are a by-product of nitrite conjugation during the latter stages of the nitrogen cycle, and will be present in some degree in all aquariums. Detritus, decaying plant material, dirty filters, over-feeding, and over-stocking the tank, all contribute to increased production of nitrates.

Water used to fill the aquarium often has nitrates in it. In the United States, drinking water may have nitrates as high as 40 ppm. Before adding water to your tank test, it for nitrates so you know if the levels are unusually high in your water source. If nitrates are above 10 ppm, you should consider other water sources that are free of nitrates.

Desired Level
In nature nitrates remain very low, generally well below 5 ppm. In freshwater aquariums nitrates should be kept below 50 pm at all times, preferably below 25 ppm. If you are breeding fish, or are battling algae growth, keep nitrates below 10 ppm.

How to Reduce Nitrates
Unlike ammonia and nitrites, the bacteria that remove nitrates do not like oxygen rich environments. Therefore, conventional filters do not harbor the bacteria that remove nitrates. Although special filters exist that will remove nitrates, such devices are usually expensive compared to other filtration units. Here is what you can do to keep nitrates low.

Keep the tank clean – Waste ultimately produces nitrates. Cleaner tanks produce fewer nitrates in the first place.

Don’t overfeed the fish – Overfeeding is a significant contributor to excess nitrates and other undesirable wastes, such as phosphates.

Water changes – Performing regular water changes with water that has little or no nitrates will lower the overall nitrate level in the tank. RO/DI water is an excellent choice for keeping nitrate levels low.

Keep live plants – Live plants utilize nitrates, and will help keep nitrates in check.

Use nitrogen removing filter media – Instead of an expensive denitrator or special filter, use special media in the filter you have. Although they will not lower nitrates dramatically, if used together with other methods the net result will be beneficial.

the ph level is fine.....there are already about 60 or so fish in it already....and none of the regs have died since november. i dunno if the new fish die from stress or what...but the new ones generally stay away from all the other cichlids after i put them in. i guess since the others have been in there since the beginning...they're just used to it......*shrugs*

Try putting a little freshwater salt in your water

Yeah I know the danger of high levels of nitrites usually means high ammonia but I cleaned the tank and vaccumed the gravel. I moved some of the fish to another tank I'll see how that goes.

Yo I got a good deal this weekend.

55 gal tank with stand, light and lid
cascade 500 canister filter (with most of the hardware)

2 marine filters the 60+ gal ones
1 30 gal filter (I think the motor is bad)
2 powerhead motors
2 200w heaters
1 protein skimmer
digital temp alert

all for $100

Oh I forgot a CO2 canister (no regulator)
and sme rocks for landscape (real roocks)

Naw I'm not fucking with saltwater, that shit looks like a pain in the ass. It was craigs list and dude said he got an aquarium and a box of shit, turned out to be 2 boxes and everything is dirty as hell. Right now I have 2 30gal tanks set up with some mollys, plattys, zebra danios, gouramis, and chinese algae eaters. I plan get a colby dragon and some oscars probably in a couple months.

Oh and I saw those glow tetras didn't like them. They probably look cool at nightbut during the day those bright colors aint hitting.

Yo, anybody know anything about UV Sterilizers? I'm thinking of buying one for my 75 gallon Cichlid tank. I'm starting to have problems and no one can figure out what the hell is going on with my tank. PH is at 8, no amonia, and very low nitrates, but I have lost like 6 fish in a month. I've had the tank for over a year with no problems. I do weekly water changes, feed once a day. I have a enough filtration, a good powerhead, and air stones.

The way they die is weird too cuz they are never sick, it's always healthy one day, upside down and dead the next!

The only thing I can think of is that there is some kind of bacteria in the water that is killing them that maybe a UV sterilizer will catch.

Can someone help me out here?:confused::confused:

I dont know to many people that use a uv sterilizer on a fresh water tank and you risk it killing beneficial bacteria if you have plants. But just make sure you get the one for your size tank or larger and not a smaller uv sterilizer and replace the bulb when needed. If you dont follow those simple steps it will be useless on your tank. Check out like the turbo twist and fosters and smiths website, it is pretty easy to install.

I would just strip the tank and start from scratch clean everything those UV sterilizer cost a grip. I find the fish I buy from petsmart don't last a week I buy fish from petco. Is it new fish or fish you had for a while?

This thread made me go out and copped a 55 gallon tank. I need a hobby and since I am not ready to get another dog....this will kill the time. I have live plants and waited about three weeks before I copped 4 tiger barbs to assist with the water cycle. I am waiting for the cycle to complete before I add more fish ( May get some cichlids and kick the tiger barbs to a smaller tank :)). The Tiger barbs are doing good by using the test kits and im doing water changes daily to keep the toxins (Ammonia to nitrites) down. I just ordered a blue moon light for the FX look. Also, I copped a male betta for the job....this fish is gangsta 4 real....but he has mad personality which I didnt expect from a fish!...Here's some pics.

Nice setup!!!

put some air stones in the back to give it some air bubbles 2 or 3 should be good!!

the cycle part of the tank is good........Me personally i just did the weekly changes and let them do there thing!!

I have 2 Black Convicts (female and male) they had some fry like a month ago.....some died......but there is alot still around!!

Here is my Pacu "Jaws" and his boy shrimp
the convict .The problems I have is they
tear the tank up when I put the feeders
in, knocking shit down eating the plants
and also the water level stays down like they drink it.

I was going to sell these guys and start
a salt tank but with business the way it
is I don't have the time I realy need a pro
to do my tank now.
By the way Jaws is 4 years old and 8 in.
I don't know how much he weights but he
would make a great sanwich. The little one
has been in there that long and kind hold his own.

Those convicts are gonna overpopulate that tank in no time flat. You really don't need the airstone.

I was about to say the samething,Im no fish expert but damn add some water to the tank or let the big one go because he looks like shaq sitting in a mini cooper car.

what does it mean when you have chalky white stuff forming around the tank?
I have a small ten gal tank and if i posted it here yall would probably laugh me out of this post.

either your water is evaporating or you got a slow leak. whats the temperature of the room?

run those air lines under the gravel and to the corners of the tank use suction cups if it doesn't stay or get more gravel.

and lock your damn photobucket account.

Anyone uses subsaturates or sand in there tank? If so how do you get rid of the solid wast that collects in it?

with the way the economy is goin....u better keep two slices of bread handy homie.:lol:

i used to have two pacu....they grow too damn fast, and yeah, they tear shit up during feeding time.
next time when u get ready to put the feeder fish in....shake up the bag for like one minute to get em all dizzy as hell, then pour them in. that way, they are too disoriented to do all that running away and causing your pacu to destroy the tank. and try feeder crawfish as well...they love those.

This is a good tread.

I got a 20g long saltwater right now. Florida crushed coral, 15 lbs of live rock, 2 clown fish, and one condy anemone. Was gunning for nano reef but my pockets and patients ran thin. The cost for lighting and live rock is ridiculous. Whisper 40 filter which I'm about to change to a skilter 75 with protien skimmer attached. Undergravel and heater. About to buy a rose anemone because the condy doesn't take to the clown fish.

Going to set up my 55g for piranha. Either red bellies or black piranha. Going to need a damn good filtration system. Community fish are cool but I always had aggressive fish. Piranha is illegal in 25 out of 50 states but not in mine and a big seller in the aquarium stores so I'm good.

States prohibiting the sale and ownership of piranha include Alaska, California, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, and Maine.
