Apple leapfrogs RIM for #2 slot on smartphone sales list
By Chris Foresman | Published: November 07, 2008 - 11:48AM CT

Nokia has had the lion's share of the cell phone market for many years, including the market for high-end smartphones. But rival RIM and new kid on the block Apple are taking a bite out of Nokia's market share, leading to the first drop in smartphone sales for the Finnish cell phone maker.

According to market research firm Canalys, Nokia lost over 12 percent of the total share of the smartphone market in the third quarter this year, dropping to 38.9 percent from 51.4 percent the year before. Apple swiftly jumped in second place, grabbing a 17.3 percent share with the iPhone 3G. Apple even bested sales of RIM's popular BlackBerry models, but the firm is not far behind, taking 15.2 percent of the smartphone market.

Apple's success has a lot to do with the launch of its updated iPhone 3G, which in addition to increasing data network speeds, has been launched in many new markets. Indeed, the iPhone has expanded to 57 countries in the past quarter. Sales of nearly 7 million 3G iPhones since the July 11 launch also gave Apple a 2.3 percent share of the overall cellphone market.

Microsoft is also feeling the effect of the iPhone's popularity, as its performance pushed the software giant in the number two spot among smartphone OS vendors. CEO Steve Ballmer famously quipped last year that he didn't expect Apple to do very well, saying, "There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share." Apple, along with third-place RIM, pushed Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform down to fourth place among smartphone OS vendors.

It's not surprising to see Nokia losing market share, given all of the activity focused on the smartphone market as of late. With Apple improving the iPhone OS and adding tons of new apps to the App Store; BlackBerry launching new Storm, Bold, and Pearl models; and Google jumping in the fray with its Linux-based Android smartphone OS, competition for the smartphone market has never been hotter. It may hurt Nokia's bottom line, but it will benefit consumers as increasing numbers of users move from standard "feature phones" to more powerful smartphones.

Just some positive news for my iPhone fam.

I am feeling good so far with my purchase and see a brighter future with the upcoming OS update, addition of free wifi hotspot access among other future plans rumored about the iPhone. I am truly not surprised this happened, just didn't expect it to happen this quickly. I hope its not some flash in the pan.

Also anybody know when the Blackberry Storm is finally dropping. I am curious how their Developers fund is coming along. Thier increased competition is just going to continue to push Apple to keep on its guard and continue to innovate.

too bad those fucker at apple won't give us what we want. Landscape keyboard, copy/paste, mms, video recording

Man, relax. Its coming. Rest assured its coming. Apple doesn't rush into things having not thought it all out. They are bringing it in soon enough. And even with the device missing those things, most experts say Apple has a two-year head start on their competition. But I agree They do need to add those things. I think one of the issues is how AT&T is addressing the iPhone. The pretty much treat it as if the iPhone were a laptop. And less more like a Phone.

Be patient.

Storm is supposed to drop somewhere near Thanksgiving 08. At least that is the best information I could find out about it.

I'm on Verizon now and this looks damn good to me.

The Storm is looking good. If your on T-Mobile, why haven't you jumped on the G1?

I personally have an iPhone 3G and love it. Its done everything I want and as Apple has show to the 1st iPhone users Apple is not going to just drop them, that meaningful OS upragdes are possible for a Phone. While Blackberry is rolling out a great phone.

I am certain Apple will continue to be a leading force in the consumer-centric smartphone. (if you think thats hate, then you have issues. Read the sentence again.) Apple keeps doing well and some people (not accusing anyone here) still have nothing but McCain like hate on Apple.

I am with Tmobile and going to get the G1, I like the Iphone but it still too limited to me.

Thats a fair answer.

But I keep hearing that from the people, that say they don't like the iPhone. The most common statement is the iPhone is limited. With the wealth of Apps the iPhone, it has prevents me from feeling at all limited.

When you do get a G1, please do tell what specifically at this time a person is missing out on. I have yet to touch one because none of the t-mobile stores have demo models sitting out for people to use.

I am still waiting to see what big killer App is going to make me say the iPhone is truly limited in a way to prevent me from accomplishing what I want to do.

What I have noticed is that all the hacker and piraters complain about the phone the most. I have no problem with that, but its an interesting thing I noticed. I have 144 apps on my iPhone 3G and have only paid for 4 applications, all the rest were free to download.

g1 dont seem that hot to me. well i didnt research it. whats so hot bout the g1 though

Is there something wrong with HTC??

Are they not a good smartphone maker. All of my "smartphones" have been some brand of HTC. Do consumers not like them??

The three main points I hear for the G1 is:

* The G1 has a built in keyboard

* The Android OS is completley open and no limits on what apps can be released on it.

* Its not Apple.

Apart from that they will be doing a lot of the same things as an iPhone or the Storm/Thunder.

HTC is relatively new.

I think they're a budding powerhouse, with their design, innovation and technology.

Plus HTC doesn't necessarily cater to businessmen, so they lose a lot with that.

I dig the iphone 3G, but they can really crush the market by releasing a few good feature updates...thank goodness for cydia for now

They have the Storm, Bold and new Curve lined up, so they will be just fine.

Apple needs to add something else or redesign the iPhone shortly, or it will get like Motorola. You can only prepackage the same product, even if it's good, but so much.

RIM Storm will put it back ahead.

I'm not sure if put them ahead. The actual challange for RIM is attracting new users. RIM is going to attract those that already bought into them. RIM didn't make everyone wake up to the resurgence of the smartphone like Apple did. I think RIM has a good chance but it comes down to attracting new users, and for the most part RIM's focus has been more so the corporate user.

Apple started from the leisure smartphone andslowly building in-roads to corporate.

either way we all win with RIM stepping up their game.

I'm still trying to figure out how a fully-touchscreen phone is #1 for business. Typing is a muthaphucka on touchscreen.

Ever since I got this Touch Pro, I been using the hell out of the QWERTY keyboard.

It's not. Plus this article is based solely on 3rd quarter sales numbers. Apple dropped the 3g and reduced prices during the Q3, RIM dropped nothing new really.

I agree with whoever said we all win though. The competition is good for everybody.

could be a dexterity thing. I have had my iPhone 3G since its release and it took me two days to get it down pact. I can type an email or instant message faster than I ever could on my Motorola Q. And soon just like the Blackberry Storm the iPhone will have a universal not part-time horizontal keyboard. Right now I instant message like crazy on Yahoo and AOL, MSN, Google talk, and ICQ like crazy. I truly have no probs with the iPhone's virtual keys.

You guys who don't like a touchscreen keyboard have a legitimate gripe, but there are a lot of people as well that are fine with it. I honestly think that people are just going to have to learn toleration. Why, because in the end when you get an email, or instant message, who the fuck cares if its typed on a physical or virtual keypad. Its almost like people arguing over whether a permenat silkscreen area or the virtual silkscreen area on a Palm device is better. Soooo....

If you type better on an actual keyboard, it makes sense for you to buy a device with one.

If you type fine with a virtual keyboard, you have more option of devices to choose from.

The bullshit needs to end, because all the devices achieve many of the same goals we want. So pick what meets your needs and all need to stop shiting dissing, insulting others for picking differently. If some one made a choice they aren't happy with, all you have to do is say from experience from your choice if it may meet that persons needs. Just stay away from personal attacks. (A general statement not accusing anyone in the thread)
