You'll need a new cable to connect the MacBook Pro and iPhone 7

Looks in iPhone 7 box at USB cable. Looks at new MacBook Pro ports. (sigh)

q:100

Today, Apple unveiled brand new MacBook Pros with a dynamic Touch Bar and a quick (albeit forced) migration to USB-3 (AKA Thunderbolt). Of course it's Apple's prerogative to continue to push its customers towards better standards. It did it with USB back in the 90s and removed the headphone jack on its phones because it wants everyone to go wireless. But while it's evolving its ports it also just made every iPhone owner that wants one of these computers buy a new dongle.

Sadly your fancy new iPhone 7 won't directly connect to your new MacBook Pro. Think about that for a second. Two flagship devices from a company that prides itself on its ecosystem won't connect to each other without a special converter.

Plus, Apple doesn't include the needed dongle in the box with the new MacBook Pros. You have to buy it separately.

So iPhone 7 owners, in addition to your $9 headphone dongle, if you want a computer with a TouchBar, you're going to have to pony up an additional $19 for the Apple USB-C to USB to connect to your phone. Or drop $25 for a Lighting to Thunderbolt cable.

Of course the iPhone isn't the only device that'll require a dongle. If you want to connect any of your legacy USB peripherals to your new MacBook Pro, you're going to need a dongle until you upgrade to Thunderbolt-happy items. Additionally, you're finally going to have to break down and buy an SD reader as it's been whisked away to the land of headphone jacks, USB 2 and the 30-pin connector.

Oh and those fancy new Lightning headphones that came with your iPhone 7. You might as well keep them out of your laptop bag.

Sometimes progress is confusing and painful. Especially on the wallet.

Screwing over consumers yet again :smh:

iPhone never needs to be plugged to the Mac unless you want to backup all your files and you don't have a PC.

Some of y'all are missing the point. It's not just bout connecting iPhones to the macbook. It's any USB device that you'd want to connect to it. I mean damn they could've at least given 1 legacy USB port. It's not like USB devices became obsolete overnight.
They don't connect any USB devices to their macbooks...ever.

Dongle masters!! Apple stay fucking over people. That's why I grabbed the last mac mini amd macbook pro's that you could mod.
What year is your Mac mini

I have a 2012 with 16gb ram and 500gb SSD and I never get the spinning beachball

The 2012 model was the last one you could upgrade yourself

I know BGOL hates Apple but once I made the switch from windows to Mac I ain't never going back

I don't even want to install windows on Mac , it was hard at first (convertxtodvd) :(
But after that :mike:

I want to forget those nod32 days

You always need to connect to your Mac. If it just stops powering on or if an update fucks you up. iTunes is required for a lot of troubleshooting steps. Unless you have a PC also.

No SD support
You will need an adaptor that can connect to a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port to use your existing microSD and SD cards. For some people, that’s not a problem. But I bet many people will disagree. Of note, the 12-inch MacBook doesn’t have a built-in SD card reader either.

No MagSafe charging
Just like the 12-inch model, the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros will not have a MagSafe charger. USB-C replaces that functionality, and we’re not surprised to see it gone. After all, Apple is all about uniformity in design — but the MacSafe will be sorely missed.

No HDMI
You can connect your MacBook to your TV using Apple TV, or you can use a dongle. If you don’t have one, then you won’t be able to use it with a good old HDMI cable because there’s no HDMI port on the 2016 MacBook Pro.

No USB 3
You know those peripherals or smartphones that come with USB connectors? Well, you’re going to need dongles for them too. You can’t connect the iPhone, a hard drive, or any other accessory to the new MacBook Pro otherwise.

BONUS: USB-C*
This one isn’t something Apple killed so we’re not counting it in our tally, but it’s worth mentioning. Apple’s cheapest new MacBook Pro is a 13-inch machine that comes without a Touch Bar and is supposed to replace the MacBook Air. It only has two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of four.

Fret not, though, because for $250 you’ll be able to buy the six dongles you need to bring back some of the features noted above.

I can't remember the last time I connected my iPhone to the Mac

I do. It was about 2 hours ago when I was updating the itunes on my jack. But this is no problem for me, I'd just buy the fucking cord :dunno:

My MBP works EXCELLENTLY (knock on wood) but I've had it for a while now, I'm gonna check this new joint out

Updating iTunes on my jack ?

Updating iTunes on my jack ?

lol jack = phone.

I sync my iTunes once in a blue and music comes out so frequently so I TRY to sync my phone to my Mac once a month to back it up and sync the mountains of shit I've downloaded in the music forum

Also, side note (not to you, just in general) I have a 6s and don't really have any plans on getting a 7 :dunno: all the smart money in saying next year's phone is the one to get anyway

So would anybody buy the 15 inch mac book pro? I've always wanted one but never been able to pull the trigger. My 5 year old Sony vaio flamed out last week and I have some funds saved up for the MacBook Pro.

Bought a dell from bestbuy last week but I feel like returning it. It's a big step down from my Sony and Sony no longer makes laptops.

Get the 2015 version from Apple refurb if they have any
Refurbished from Apple is like new sometimes better because they replace the battery and the screen and they check it here not like new ones inspected in China
You ever used Mac before ?
